30 Best Hotels in Tokyo for Every Budget | Condé Nast Traveler

"It's the gardens—all ten acres of them—that will really catch both your eye and your imagination at this massive hotel. The hotel was built more than 50 years ago to accommodate travelers for the first Tokyo Olympic Games, but the gardens staked claim to this area first—they're more than 400 years old. Across the lush greenery, spot traditional red Guzei bridges over koi-filled ponds, while a waterfall rushes over the edge in perfect view. It doesn't feel quite like you're in the middle of a high-tech, bright-lights kind of city, because it first and foremost feels like an oasis." - Brandon Presser

Hotel New Otani Tokyo

"First impression. A towering tribute to the wave of early modernist architecture that swept across Japan before Tokyo hosted the Olympics in 1964. Although located in the heart of the city, the New Otani feels more like a resort, with a massive acreage, rambling gardens, and a bevy of dining options—it’s like a cruise ship from outer space docked in the heart of the world’s busiest burg.  Backstory. Built to house the anticipated rush of new travelers when Tokyo hosted the 1964 Olympics, the property—with its thousand-plus rooms—clings to a fascinating scrap of history: a real-deal samurai’s garden that’s believed to be over 400 years old. As the city’s first version of a modern, international hotel, the New Otani has retained its unofficial title as host to the international elite; it’s a favorite among diplomats and other visiting dignitaries. The private gardens might just be the most popular spot in town for wedding portraits.  Room. There are two types of entry-level room design in the so-called “Executive Zen” portion of the rambling property—a meditation on wood, or a palette of stone. The warm mahogany feels mid-century modern in its subtle detailing, while the slate suites feel sleeker and bold. You could stay twice and have two wildly different aesthetic experiences. Both feel fresh and up-to-date; the beneficiaries of a recent room refresh.  Food & Drink.  The breakfast buffet in the main building is as international as the hotel’s guests. Staff proudly exclaim that the AM offerings number more than 100—everything from dim sum to pancakes. Although only a fraction of the size (food-wise), the Executive Club promises a more serene entry into the day with floor-to-ceiling windows. Sip your coffee and load up your plate with irani and designer croissant while enjoying a tree-lined vista with the new Olympic stadium and the towers of Shinjuku just behind.   Service. While lobby-level check-in can feel like a Vegas casino, guests staying on the executive floors have a much quieter, quicker welcome lofted over a dozen stories up where you can file your documents over a cup of tea and Japanese sweets before being gently escorted to your room.  Describe the tribe. With over a thousand rooms—ranging greatly in price—you’re bound to come across every stripe of visitor from a coterie of suit-clad UN delegates to gussied-up obachan grannies enjoying a spot of tea and some smooth piano music in the lobby.  Spa. On warm days (and trust us, Tokyo’s summers are steamy) take full advantage of the outdoor pool—from certain angles you might trick yourself into believing you’re relaxing at a resort in Florida.  Bottom line: Worth it? Why?  A city unto itself when you’re feeling lazy; but centrally located when you’re ready to go full-blown city mouse." - Brandon Presser

The hotel is maintained pretty well. It is also accessible via railway station which is quite nearby. The limousine bus also stops at this hotel so it's very convenient if you're coming from Narita Airport. The hotel has good rooms and facilities. The breakfast and restaurant options are good too. I also liked their Garden which you can access when you're in the hotel.

We booked a deluxe double king room in the Executive House Zen floors of the New Otani using AMEX Plat and was upgraded to an executive king suite! The suite was truly lovely and really a perfect place to end the night. We also had access to the executive lounge and that also was quite a treat. The menu in the lounge changed 3 times a day so no matter the time of day, we were able to have a tasty treat -- we usually ended the night with a glass of champagne to celebrate the day. The morning breakfast buffet in the main dining room was incredible with so many choices, both traditional Japanese as well as more typical American breakfast choices. The grounds are also spectacular with a beautiful zen garden and waterfall.||The best thing about the hotel, however, was the impeccable service of the staff. On what was supposed to be our last day of our stay, I fell ill (an unfortunate bout of food poisoning likely from a dish at Tsukiji!). The staff graciously extended our stay for another night without needing to change rooms since I was ill. They also called the next hotel we were supposed to be checking into to let them know I was sick and could not make it until the following day. That hotel usually charges a 100% cancellation fee given same day cancellation but because the New Otani staff explained the situation, the next hotel only charged us a 50% fee which we were pretty happy about.||Altogether, this was a wonderful stay at a truly beautiful hotel. One thing to note is that this hotel is not close to any subway stations -- it's approximately an 11 minute walk and depending on the route you take back to the hotel, the walk includes a slight hill (but, if you cut through the New Otani Garden lobby, you can skip the hill altogether.

Really good value! The staff was extremely kind and accommodating and they made sure we have the best experience for our honeymoon. The view has a great mix of buildings and green and it's a really convenient location. We will definitely come back!

An older hotel, but well maintained. Beautiful garden area and swimming pool. I first stayed there 30 years ago and again just recently. Highly recommend.

Google
The hotel is very much of its era, but immaculately maintained, and with excellent service. My room was calm, comfortable, and well-serviced during my stay. The breakfast selections were great and the property, with a waterfall and rose garden, is most attractive at this time of year. With a busy work schedule, the only thing I found inconvenient is that after 9 pm the only food alternatives I could discover were room service, or a bar menu at Trader Vic's on the property, which is claustrophobic and airless. I look forward to visiting again one day.

Google
Overall a good stay, room is spacious but kind of old. The breakfast place is lovely but sometimes get too busy. They can improve more on food quality. Service is excellent; efficient and helpful staff. There is a very nice teppanyaki restaurant located in their beautiful Japanese garden.. these are the best part of our stay.

Never again for us as check-in took a year off my life and was a horrible start to the holiday. I wish I'd been more diligent reading the poor reviews - which are accurate. If our check-in had been seamless, ratings would be 4 out of 5. Room perfectly fine, pajamas okay (have had better at American Tokyo hotels), room service fine, gym small but does the job, rose garden okay (but not worth a detour to see), we got complimentary boiled sweets in the room, which was the most luxurious part of the stay. This is a large mini-city of a hotel, but getting tired and not as grand as it pretends. No amazing views of anything, and the round restaurant & tiny bar are like a 70s sitcom, worth having a look, but not paying for. Not usefully close to a subway station - 15 min trek. The bad stuff - travelling from the UK meant we'd been on the go for nearly 24 hours. Our documented reservation had been made for at least 6 months and clearly stated a room for two people, with agreed cost. At check-in desk, they insisted the room was for one person and we'd have to almost pay double for the other person. This felt like a scam and we weren't prepared to pay so much extra. So, in our frazzled state, despite trying to negotiate and understand the insanity, we resigned ourselves to looking for another hotel and started googling - a 'never again' moment. After an hour of sitting there in a state of confusion and frustration, the manager finally agreed to honour the original booking, at a reduced increased price. We took it. But never again.

Google
The 10-acre Japanese garden in the heart of Tokyo is nothing short of a tourist attraction minus the crowds. A waterfall, Koi stocked pond, and 200 year old trees complete with a lovely walking trail and restaurants complement the well maintained garden. The rooms are bit small hence the 4 stars but the aircon is effective. The breakfast is sumptuous and room service prompt.

Yelp
One gigantic hotel that offers many interesting activities. In room shower comes with big, wide, deep tub, and the best part is it has powerful water pressure to give a person magnificent shower. Too bad the television remote control has no English instructions and too few channels. Fortunately, it does have CNN and BBC. Overall, very good impression of this well known hotel chain.

Yelp
This is what I call an "old money" similar to the Fairmont in SF. It's VERY nice, but slightly outdated. Now don't let that deter you, because you feel like you're in a piece of history while here. I stayed here back in 2005 and it hasn't changed much, but believe me when I say that's a good thing. Service is top notch and the staff are very patient will go out of their way to help you. There are two towers. The Main and the much taller Garden Tower. Last time I stayed in the main so this time I opted for the Garden Tower and went all out with a suite and it's very nice. The shower is huge as is the room. They also have an amazing garden and a ton of restaurants. If you're staying in Tokyo then rest easy if you choose New Otani. It's one of the more classy places I've been to.

Yelp
IF YOU LIKE WALKING AROUND, THIS IS NOT YOUR PLACE This is a massive high-endish budiness hotel. It is next to the Empire Palace, and the business district of Ginza. It has the beauty of the anonymity scale provides. Rooms are very nice, in an old way. Bathrooms are a bit dated, definitively not to the standards of high end hotels. The compound has beautiful Japanese gardens. Quite impressive, though I am not sure if travelers would appreciate that in their hotel, when they can easily walk to the palace ones. The compound the hotel is part of is literally a maze. And I would never recommend to try leave or come here walking. You would end up either lost or walking by highways for half an hour. You can only arrive and leave in a taxi. This was very detrimental to me. Several very nice restaurants in the building. For me, this is part of a past culture that will be probably lost, and almost no one will miss.

Yelp
This review is purely based off the garden ! It's stunning ! I looked up many gardens in Tokyo. This one came up several times ! It's a small garden in the hotel but it's totally worth going too. My parter and I have been several times just to get into nature in the city ! It's actually more magical at night time in my opinion . And if it's not closed make it a day trip and pay a bit more to go into the pool area ! It's so worth it and you will not regret it ! I love this place we had such a great time here.

Yelp
I've been there since I was little. They have great bars and restaurants and special shops. The most amazing thing is their service! Quality: High. Price: High. Customer service: Amazing. Parking: Vallet and garage. Tip: No.1 cocktail maker is at the bar capre.

Yelp
I came to Tokyo on a business trip. The hotel is traditional and has not been updated in many years from a technology standpoint. There are no USB ports in the guest rooms. I stayed at this hotel chain in the 1980s, and some of the furnishings are from that time. An actual key is used for the doors with a clunky keychain. I think I would prefer to stay at a more contemporary hotel in the future. I paid US$45 for a hamburger with no bun. The restaurants inside the hotel are quite expensive. My room had two very low to the ground twin beds, not an ideal set up.

Yelp
It's an enormous Hotel with multiple sections. Plenty of small shops and restaurants. +Beautiful Garden that's free to walk around and you definitely should. There's a giant pond with lots of Koi fish to feed as well. +Amazing service staff. They do speak English but if not, they will try their best to help out anyways. -Rooms are severely dated and had a bit of a funk. -WiFi was complementary but I had 1bar so it was useless through my stay. -Barebones Gym. Not even worth visiting.

Yelp
Outstanding accommodations. Are you a westerner with no fluency in Japanese? No worries. The extensive multilingual staff in this hotel will provide excellent service and communication. Japanese Guest relations are at its highest level in this hotel. Our family of six quickly regarded this hotel as a home away from home. The grounds, or without exaggeration, picturesque. The gardens, originally crafted in the 17th century by a former feudal shogun, provides a serene visit, close to your hotel room after a transpacific journey. The hotel is nicely positioned not far from the Akasaka-Mitsuke metro station, 3 to 4 stops away from Tokyo station and the Shinkansen. During the Olympics, I would imagine the west facing rooms will be greatly desired since you can see the stadium just over the Imperial Akasaka grounds. There are two main breakfast buffets not including the rotating restaurant. The Gardenview restaurant is a gem with a 2nd story, all glass window view of the gardens. The rooftop restaurant provides an amazing view of Tokyo. I would recommend bringing your sunglasses if you are light sensitive. The breakfasts are a mixture of Western and Japanese cuisine, a relaxed first step at appreciating Japanese cuisine. There are several parks (including a small memorial to Dr Hashimoto) in walking distance as well as a small shopping mall across the street which includes several nice, moderately priced restaurants. To the south, near the train station, there are many sites of street food and fun shopping. It was an added pleasure in the mornings to depart our day through the ground level exit and past the exotic car show room containing Ferraris and other glitzy cars. Rooms: all the rooms we stayed in consisted of three twin sized beds, capable of sleeping one individual adult in each bed (two smaller children in one:) ).The beds are elevated and the experience is similar to western sleeping arrangements and not Ryokan style. There is a console type radio Between the two main beds which I would definitely recommend turning on when moving about in the room. The radio provides a mix of western music style in both your sleeping area and the bathroom. The bathrooms are all fully equipped with the amazing Japanese toilets. we booked our stay here through Delta and used it as a base of operations for the beginning and conclusion of our Japanese multi city trip. We spent two nights at the beginning and three nights at the end of our trip (added one extra day apart from our Delta deal). The bell service staff was very kind in storing our excess luggage (1 bag) in between our two stays.

Yelp
Great location. Walking distance to train station. Standard room was on the small side, but it's typical for Tokyo. Breakfast buffet included. Love the fact that it's a five minute walk to a street filled with local eatery. We went restaurant hopping, and it was all delicious foods! I would definitely stay here if we were to be visiting this area of Tokyo!

Yelp
Some great things about this hotel: - the really beautiful garden on the hotel campus. It might be worth the cost of a room just to spend time there. - courteous and efficient staff - comfortable, quiet bedrooms (with a dimmer switch for the whole room - this hotel really understands lighting) Some less great things: - Size. New Otani is a real behemoth of a hotel. Can get crowded and tough to navigate from one part of the complex to another. - Expensive. Overall, this is a great place to stay in Tokyo. If you go, be sure to make a reservation at the hibachi restaurant in the garden for an amazing meal.

Yelp
Come and check out the Japanese gardens in the back they are really beautiful and you don't even have to be a hotel guest to get in. That said, I didn't stay at this hotel just made the trip to see the garden, so that was worthwhile, but the neighborhood its self is really boring, just lots of large skyscrapers, corporate buildings and really no active life on the streets. I couldn't wait to get back to Shinjuku where things are really hopping.

Yelp
One of the best hotel stays! My room was on one of the Executive House Zen floors and it was a perfect experience from the moment we checked in to after we left (we left a card behind in the room and they helped us with it!). Grounds - the hotel is a small shopping center complete with a gorgeous garden with waterfall outside. The view can be enjoyed from the restaurant on the main floor (walking straight past the main lobby) even if you're not a guest at the hotel. Restaurants - variety of options from simple noodles to French cuisine, with my favorite being the traditional japanese one in the Garden Tower (long lines at lunch time, so arrive early!). For tea/coffee and a slice of the best dessert, head to the right of the main entrance to Satsuki - this is also home to some of the most amazing Mount Blanc you can get in Tokyo! Room - freshly remodeled with all the top amenities and absolutely spotless. Choice of robes and way too many mens and womens toiletries. Quite spacious for Tokyo standards, with a large bathroom as well. I found my perfect lighting and room temperature for bedtime and fell asleep like a baby. Transportation - we travelled exclusively by taxi, and although there was a line up of them at the bottom of the hill, we still had a small wait because of the number of people taking them. Give yourself a few extra minutes if you're headed out to meetings during rush hour! Our floor was extremely quiet, had added security, cameras, and speedy room service. The staff was really attentive and genuinely couldn't have been more helpful. Overall, seriously an amazing experience!

Yelp
Very nice hotel. I agree w others saying that it's an older hotel but regardless of that, the service is great as well as the amenities. The breakfast is also excellent overlooking the most beautiful japaneSe garden in the city. Many restaurant and bar options with great views of the city at the top of the tower. Echoing another review, the hotel comes across as classical and interesting rather than dated.

Yelp
I accidentally booked New Otani Makuhari not knowing there were multiple New Otani properties. The New Otani Tokyo nor New Otani Makuhari was willing to accommodate my mistake at any level, charging me for my entire stay at the wrong property plus new charges at the correct property. Will never stay again unless this is addressed.

Yelp
The more I take the time to wander and see everything this hotel has to offer its guests, the more impressed I am. They have so many small shops and restaurants that, If you really wanted to, you could make it so you never had to leave the hotel. And the hotel's proximity to the Metro lines make it so convenient to get to almost any place in Tokyo. I strongly suggest that if you plan on using the train system to get around, that you buy the 24-hour metro card so you don't have to ever mess with figuring out point to point costs and buying tickets ala carte. Just get the 24-hour pass and be done with it. Keep it simple. The one for 600 yen per day per adult traveler is the one I got. If in doubt, stop by at the friendly concierge desk on the way out the door.

Yelp
After looking forward to my stay here upon the ratings and **pictures posted I was incredibly disappointed as our room looks absolutely nothing like the pictures as advertised. I spoke with the front desk about my concerns only for him to not only dismiss my concerns or offer any sort of options but to state that this hotel can never guarantee a room that is advertised. Very disappointing.

Yelp
Clean. Friendly. Perfect Location. Recently stayed at the hotel (three persons) and found a perfect room for the first three days of our Japan adventure (comfortable beds). We were able to get a room in the Garden Tower overlooking the outdoor garden (zen!). The room was perfect for the three of us and we found it easy to navigate throughout the hotel and in the outdoor vicinity (two subway stations easily walk able from the hotel). There was a quick-stop convenience store in the hotel for small purchases and the dining areas were perfect for dinner / breakfast (buffet was pricey, but great for convenience). The staff was super friendly and helpful in getting around. Trader Vic's was a nice place to end one of our nights with a perfectly composed Tiki drink. I recommend walking the garden for a couple zen moments before starting your day. A nice coffee shop is easily walk able outside the hotel (Hawaiian Coffee) as well. Out of all the places we stayed while in Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Sapporo) this was our favorite hotel.

Yelp
Elegant modern large hotel centrally located in the Akasaka Sacas area. Shaped like a spinning 3 point star, the hotel is large but manageable for less mobile guests. The high point : the beautiful gardens filled with shiny rock, mossy bamboo, fat koi of every color, cats and waterfalls. The dining area overlooks them but you must stroll the to feel the zen. Rooms well appointed with comfortable seating area and desk. A bit cramped for two people but doable. Beautiful Browns and bronze tones give it a natural zen feel. Depending on the view and room height you will enjoy the gardens, city, pool from above. Plenty of restaurants both inside hotel and just beyond the garden. There is also a tea house and chapel. Staff is Japanese graciousness. I loved it here and would return.

Yelp
LOVED this hotel!!! It's in a great location to explore Tokyo sites. You are walking distance to all of the major train and subway lines. The hotel itself has the most beautiful Japanese garden I've ever seen! It has so many restaurants and bars and cafes that yuh could stay for weeks and not try them all! Same goes for the shops! There's everything you could need, including a market that has fresh sushi, fruit, snacks and liquor. The pool was nice and is included in the room fee if you sign up to become a member at the front desk. The room was bigger then I expected but still not as large as I'm used to... ( but we are in japan right?) they did have a king bed which is unheard of in this Country! And don't get me started on the toilets! No spoilers. Just... use the toilet. Staff was very friendly and room was well Stocked. This hotel has everything you could ever need. Why not 5 stars? Honestly only because it's not a 5 star resort with some of the nicer decor and larger pool, fancy spa etc. it is slightly dated with the decor but the staff was 5 stars and beyond!
google avatar

Herb F.

Yelp
Old classic hotel in the heart of Tokyo. The rooms are beige and dated but clean and well-appointed. Service was prompt; I requested to borrow an iPhone charger and more water and a staff member came up to the room in a few minutes. They have a pool that's open for summer, and gorgeous Japanese garden with koi and a waterfall. Conveniently located along major subway stations as well.

Yelp
Oldie but a goodie! The New Otani has seen better days and you can see its age in its walls and dark halls but the restaurants in its arcade as well as the shops in the hotel have a good curation of souvenirs and various fashion finds. I LOVE one ceramic store in particular, right across from the tea lounge (with the garden view) - it brings in rare ceramics (i.e. plates, dinnerware, mugs, vases, etc.) from Japanese ceramic artists and masters not readily found elsewhere in the country. Items are often one-of-a-kind and those looking for something truly special will not be disappointed!

Yelp
This hotel is everything but what it's supposed to be. We booked a special weekend at what we thought was a 5* hotel, this was an engagement weekend, so expectations were normally high (Normal for any 5 star hotel). All of my special requests were neglected, was not given a smoking room and was told to smoke was only either in a small suffocating smoking room or in a neglected and badly lit corner. That corner seemed more like a punishment than a dedicated space for a smoker to enjoy their time. The room was far far far below up to Par - no baggage rack, zero drawers for clothes, 4 hangers in the closet which had no light - it quickly hit me that we'd be living out of suitcases if we stayed. The amenities in the room were ok, but the tea/coffee area was worse than that of a 3* hotel. The bathroom was far below the norm. We had zero touch of personal service, and the hotel as a whole felt like a big Convention hall. The garden (a special place on the heart of tokyo) was lovely, but all we heard from staff was what we weren't allowed to do. (Garden closing at 10am, no café, no clean smoking area,...) The restaurant was a whole other experience, we ate at the recommended and apprently "best" restaurant in the hotel - the Japanese e Steakhouse. It was the worst meal I had in three weeks in Tokyo, by far. At a 200€ price point per person, I was shocked that I had to prepare my own salad at the sad sad salad bar, restaurant was empty and not well-maintained,5' the steaks were ok but that's it, everything else served was bland and without any taste. The wine was sold as one thing but was obviously the lower end of the same line, and our two soups were horribly microwaved meaning all that nonsense of fresh and made to order were lies. The pool area was closed without notification, and it was hosting an event booked months before for a magazine. When public hotel areas are closed to the public, it's common courtesy to inform them, as the pool may be the reason person books that hotel. We checked out within 16 hours of checking in, and went to a real 5* hotel (The tokyo westin) where we were greeted by a bottle of complimentary champagne, flowers, a perfect room and everything you expect in a 5* hotel. The otani felt very old school, untrained staff, awkward feelings, and slightly mobby feeling throughout. It's a scam and doesn't deserve most of the "good reviews" it received. It should be déclassés dying to a 4* star hotel. The manager seemed concerned, but his director didn't seem to care - citing to me that their hotel is like that, it is what it is. We'll what it is,is a 4* hotel with a nice garden, but that's it. Sad and very disappointing moment celebrating our engagement. The Westin definitely made up for it, and is in a far better neighborhood too!

Yelp
Kyubei in the hotel. Price is visible and clear. Everyone can enjoy Sushi and definitely gooood compared to the other sushi place.

Yelp
This is a nice hotel. It is very old but it comes off more as classic than dated. The service is also outstanding and they're able to do things like charge in $usd to help save on transaction fees. The garden is also outstanding and a great touch. If you want to impress someone this is a good pick for that. However, I probably would not stay here again as I feel there are better options in Tokyo. For one, while the neighborhood is nice and quiet you have to walk quite a ways to get off the hotel complex to the nearest train station or restaurants. In summary, I think it's a great hotel and an interesting place to stay once, but there are better options.

Yelp
Elegant hotel situated in a forested area in Asakasa District in Tokyo. Close to many Japanese Government buildings and the U.S. Embassy. Wonderful breakfast buffet in the Garden Lounge and beautiful Japanese Garden well worth an early morning stroll.

Yelp
Huge hotel plaza on the outskirts of Tokyo with 3 towers and a plethora of restaurants and a shopping plaza. The rooms themselves are on the small side but have the standard amenities. The staff are only marginally helpful as they kept claiming that they had given me my key when I had not even checked in which was definitely irritating. It took over 3 hours to resolve the situation which was not ideal. The view is nice as is the in-hotel convenience but service could be much better.

Jody C.

Yelp
Booked a stay there late Nov. 2018 and had the same experience of others as not being guaranteed a room with two beds. The gardens are beautiful. Our experience is we originally booked 4 nights thru Citi ThankYou rewards points, but due to a family emergency back in the US only ended up staying two nights. Have been attempting multiple times to contact the hotel but with no response. Finally Citi ThankYou customer assistance received a response the hotel would not refund any points or credit. Just beware when booking this property with points

Yelp
I have been a loyal customer for two decades. The ladies at the concierge desk are extremely helpful and patient. Higashi san, the general manager, also took exceptional good care of me when I had to deal with a tough situation during my stay in April. I hold profound respect for the staff, who always provide a consistently high level of service and a heartfelt attitude towards guests.

Door boy is not even properly trained. Waited on the taxi zone standing on the top of the Matt written TAXI next to the zone sign for over five min. He was not even paying attention. Lady came out from the hotel got his attention got into taxi passing me, who is standing on the taxi zone.

Yelp
If you are fortunate to get one of the larger rooms in the tower you will be in Mt Fuji viewing Heaven. The service is sublime. You cannot get more attentive and committed hotel staff anywhere. The decor is not modern but not at all shabby or in need of renovation. The Japanese garden and koi ponds are magnificent. The imperial palace is a tones throw ( don't attempt to prove this assertion). The food in the restaurants is surprisingly delicious.
