Nestled in Murray Hill, this inviting hotel combines cozy, modern rooms with exceptional service, making it a perfect NYC retreat just steps from iconic sights.
"Spain-based NH Hotels Group might not have immediate name recognition in the States, but this 288-room property in Midtown is a worthy introduction to the brand. Less than a 10-minute walk from Grand Central or the New York Public Library, the hotel occupies a 1920s neo-Romanesque building on Madison Avenue and draws inspiration from that thoroughfare’s history as the heart of the advertising industry. A midcentury-modern Mad Men aesthetic suffuses the public spaces, including the Mad Bar & Lounge, where cocktails are inspired by the 1950s and ‘60s Golden Age of advertising, free weeknight jazz concerts are held in a fireplace-lit room, and Italian-accented bar bites come from Serafina, the hotel’s on-site restaurant. Guest rooms don’t skimp on the extras (bathrobes, slippers, espresso machine), and terrace suites have outdoor seating areas with views of the skyline, including the very-close-by Empire State Building." - Jennifer Flowers
"Guests of this restored, 100-year old building are invited to relive 1950’s New York City. The historic hotel offers all the elegance of midcentury style with the comfort of a modern boutique hotel. Old-school radios, televisions, and record players in the lobby and lounges blend seamlessly with avant-garde design and playful decor. You’ll find teal leather couches, old black-and-white photographs of Midtown, and low-light lounges that transport you in time. Linger inside the lobby to skim carefully-selected books like Rock Covers, Film Noir, New Architecture New York, and Soul R&B Funk."
"A hotel in New York City featuring a community table, fireplaces, and live jazz, ideal for solo urban escapes." - Travel + Leisure Editors
"Why book? Quiet luxury meets 1950’s elegance with this Mad Men–esque hotel conveniently located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan with breathtaking views of the Empire State Building and easy access to everything NYC has to offer. Set the scene Guests of this restored, 100-year old building are invited to relive 1950’s New York City. Linger inside the lobby to skim carefully-selected books like Rock Covers, Film Noir, New Architecture New York, and Soul R&B Funk. Locals spill in on week nights for live music at the lounge’s piano bar, and New York City staple Serafina attracts professionals for business meetings and quick yet indulgent lunches. Most of the hotel guests are business and leisure travelers who are loyalists to NH Hotels abroad. During business hours, desks in the lobby are filled with remote workers between meetings. The bustling lobby and cozy lounges maintain a level of calm and sophistication, even through the check-in and check-out rush. Guests are dressed casually yet fashionably (no one screams “tourist”). It’s a perfect blend of international jet setters and digital nomads. The backstory NH Collection New York Madison Avenue is part of the NH Hotel Group, an established and trusted brand for European and Latin American travelers. The beloved hotel group, headquartered in Marid, made its debut in 1978 and has since expanded—now made up of nearly 400 hotels across 28 countries. The Madison Avenue location is the only NH property in the US, making it a popular NYC destination for European tourists who are loyal to the brand; the property is also a member of GHA Discovery, a global loyalty program. The property opened its doors in 2021 after renovating a 1920’s renaissance-revival building designed by architects E. Murgatroyd and P. Ogden. Made up of a striking red-brick outer, it’s entirely dedicated to the hotel, and offers some of the city’s best views of the nearby Empire State Building. The rooms The celebration of the Golden Age of advertising doesn’t stop in the lobby. Guest rooms feature midcentury-modern design choices with a warm color palette, exposed brick, and dramatic floor-to-ceiling drapes. As far as New York City hotel rooms go, the spacious rooms are cozy enough that you can actually sit back and relax after a day of sightseeing. For a luxe city stay, NH Collection New York Madison Avenue offers 22 junior suites with skyline views and four Tower Suites boasting unbelievable views of the Empire State Building. The Penthouse Empire Suite features a jaw-dropping private terrace, where you’ll want to enjoy your morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. Guest rooms are well-kept and polished, with plenty of space to feel at home. No matter what room you book, you’ll have access to free high-speed Wi-Fi, European bath products, and a smart TV. Slip on the ultra-soft bathrobe and slippers while you unwind—well-deserved after walking a staggering 10,000 steps (or more) through the city. Rates start at $377 per night. Food and drink I was thrilled to see the hotel’s signature restaurant is Serafina, a New York staple, contemporary Italian restaurant known for its yummy pasta dishes. It's conveniently located just off the hotel’s lobby, and is open to guests and New Yorkers alike for daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The restaurant offers a modern and slightly celebratory feel, with a granite and marble bar, and a wood-burning pizza oven. Order the tableside pasta tossed in a parmesan wheel, or the porterhouse fiorentina that’s cooked to perfection. Guests start their morning at Serafina’s European–style breakfast buffet. Choose from delicious pastries, meats and cheese, pancakes, fresh fruit, and eggs made to order. Come lunch time, those strolling by can come in from their nearby offices over lunch break, lending to Serafina’s lively yet casual feel throughout the day. If you wish to venture out for dinner, there are restaurant options galore; head to nearby local favorites like Zuma, Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, or the Park Avenue Tavern (their chocolate chip cookie skillet alone is worth traveling for). After dinner, guests can visit MADbar & Lounge, 1950s-themed cocktail bar next to the lobby with a moody and romantic ambiance. I recommend stopping by for one of the best Old Fashions you’ll ever have, or the Mr. Anejo Manhattan, a reinvention of a classic Manhattan. Grab your cocktail and enjoy live jazz music in the lounge. The neighborhood/area Travelers visiting the Big Apple have a major incentive to book: location, location, location. Centrally located in Midtown South on the city’s historic Madison Avenue, the hotel offers some of the city’s best views of the Empire State Building (book a room with a terrace for Instagram-worthy shots). It’s a quick eight-minute walk from Grand Central Station, allowing guests to easily access the rest of the city by subway. It’s also walking distance from some of the city's most iconic landmarks, including Rockefeller Center, Summit One, Bryant Park, Broadway theaters, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and the Chrysler Building. And all major airports are under an hour away, offering plenty of flexibility while making your travel arrangements. This hotel is conveniently located for sightseeing, shopping, and navigating through the rest of the city, without the overwhelming (and intimating) hustle and bustle of New York. It’s tucked away on a quiet street that lets you forget how close you actually are to busy Times Square. The service I was promptly greeted by the guest relations manager who checked me in swiftly and offered a helpful explanation of the hotel’s layout. Every member of the staff I encountered was friendly and didn’t hesitate to ask if I needed anything at all. As a whole, the service is casual without compromising an upscale experience. There was a slightly laidback feel among the staff that actually made me feel more at home. The guest relations manager is available to help secure tickets to Broadway shows, renting a limousine or other car service, or narrowing down the laundry list of Midtown dinner spots to hit. Eco effort Inside the bathroom guests will find small cards encouraging them to reuse towels when possible, and there wasn’t much single-use plastic in sight. Guests must use their key card to light their room, which makes the building more energy efficient. The property encourages the use of StayApp, a mobile app with hotel information, guest services, and contact information, for ease and to replace paper brochures. Accessibility The hotel is equipped with ADA compliant rooms and wheelchair accessible elevator and halls. The staff was very accommodating and made sure to ask if I needed any additional assistance or arrangements made upon arriving. Anything left to mention? The hotel features a flexible space that fits up to 25 people for meetings or events (ideal for local businesses in need of an off-site location). And if you can’t stand to be thrown off your normal workout routine, the hotel has a fitness center open 24 hours a day. If you’re visiting NYC and want the convenience a central location offers without the hectic noise and crowds, NH Collection New York Madison Avenue is perfect for you. The hotel is a hidden gem in Midtown South: it delivers a quiet, clean, and upscale hotel experience without all the fuss. And as far as cool factor goes, this one takes the cake. The brand pays homage to an iconic time in the city’s history in a completely unique and refreshingly authentic way." - Meaghan Kenny
