Water Sommelier Martin Riese Wants to Help Hydrate the World - AFAR

"While serving as deputy maître d’ at a Michelin-starred hotel restaurant, Riese created an ambitious water program in 2006 featuring more than 35 mineral waters from around the world; the initiative was well received, raised his profile (he was tapped to select waters for a visiting delegation, prompting the mayor’s effusive reaction), and helped set the stage for his later book and professional certification as a mineral water sommelier." - Katherine LaGrave

Stayed here for four nights 7-11 august with my partner. This is a fantastic hotel which simply merits 5 stars. Breakfast was amazing. Top quality food and lots of choice. We had a business room even though we were on a city break. Shower was great and the toilet seat even lifted for you if you were close!!! The bed and pillows were great too. Just one one last point, the staff were very attentitive especially the young man on concierge. Very helpful. Special mention to him.if ever in Berlin again this is where I would stay without hesitation.

The Hotel Palace Berlin was a 5 star experience. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and there were lots of lovely extras like welcome chocolates and a note welcoming us to Berlin. |The breakfast selection was excellent with so many options available, and oh my goodness the bread was delicious. Especially the pretzel croissants. |The swimming pool and gym were a huge bonus especially after a few days sight seeing. The hotel is conveniently located to lots of shops and restaurants if you don't fancy travelling too far, and the zoo is literally over the road. |Speaking of roads, mind out for bikes when crossing the road as there are cycle lanes on the pavements and you don't want to get taken out by a cyclist!|As part of our room rate, we had access to the Club Lounge which offers soft and alcohol drinks and delicious snacks. It was on the 7th floor so has great views across the city and zoo. The staff were lovely and it was a nice quiet escape from the busyness outside. |All in all, a fantastic hotel and we would highly recommend it.

I cannot recommend this hotel despite its convenient location and good breakfasts. During my stay in Berlin, my travel companion suddenly became seriously ill, and I made the difficult decision to cut our trip short because of her health. Unfortunately, I felt completely misled by the Front Desk Manager. He assured me that he understood the urgency of my situation and explained that if I had booked directly through the hotel, they would have refunded the remaining night. However, since I booked through Booking.com, he claimed there was nothing he could do and that it was entirely up to Booking. To my surprise, Booking.com told me the exact opposite — that it was entirely up to the hotel, and the hotel refused to issue any refund. I even suggested an alternative: to reschedule my unused night for another visit to Berlin and pay for an additional night or more, but the hotel declined this as well. To make matters worse, they still charged the full city tax for all nights, including the one I never stayed. I found this very disappointing — the inconsistent communication, the lack of flexibility, and the refusal to show understanding in an unforeseen health emergency. In the end, it became clear that the responsibility lay solely with the hotel, not Booking.com who tried to negotiate it on my behalf with hotel, yet they chose to deny any form of customer service or goodwill. Big disappointment, and I cannot recommend this hotel. PS. Hotel send me response: „Unfortunately, the booking portal does not allow cancellations of such rates and instead directs guests back to the hotel. This may understandably create the impression that the decision lies with us, but regrettably that is not the case.” And Booking.com sent: „After multiple attempts to negotiate with the property on your behalf, we regret to inform you that they have declined the refund, citing the non-refundable nature of the booking. We genuinely tried our best to advocate for you, but as previously mentioned, Booking.com is not authorized to issue refunds directly, this decision rests entirely with the property.”

Superb hotel. Modern and comfortable room. Magnificent breakfast service. Beautiful relaxing spa. Every single hotel staff member I encountered complimented my stay with their helpful, friendly hospitality and professionalism. A very high standard of service to be celebrated.

We arrived during the Pride week without having any clue about what was happening. It was not possible to reach the hotel by car, we parked 10 min away and carried the luggage all the way to the hotel. There should be some kind of notice to highlight what’s happening around and what affects your stay. This is what I expect when we talk about 5 star hotels. Room was all right, swimming pool was clean and nice but the sauna costs extra!

A very enjoyable stay, location was ideal for us - bus outside doot and a short walk to S & U stations. We arrived early and were able to leave our bags and offered use of the leisure area until our room was ready. Breakfast was very good, plenty of choice and a different juice shot each morning on arrival. Leisure area very good, didn't use sauna but swimming pool was a good size, massage options with discount if you book on arrival. Wifi really good throughout hotel. Bar in hotel closes before 11 as does Gin cocktail bar but other options closeby if you want to stay out late. When checking in at reception it is all online so took us a little bit longer to do but we weren't rushed. Bottle of water and tea/coffee making facilities in room, also small fridge for you use

My wife and I had such an incredible stay for just one night. The service was incredibly nice, the vibes were awesome, the pool was beautiful, the rooms were high tech and extra clean, the breakfast buffet was marvelous, and the bathrobes are so comfy! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone coming to the Berlin area! Plus if you are a LHW member, you get extra benefits, like a free room upgrade as I myself received!

We were a family of 4 and booked 2 rooms. The bed was just so comfortable it was great. The standard room is a bit on the small side but we didn’t need anything else in it. They use ritual products in the bathroom, both my daughter and husband got a reaction from using the shampoo. My husband felt like his head was burning and my daughter’s eye brow swelled up. Not the hotel’s fault but won’t ever be buying from them. The pool was fab we used it every day and the breakfast was amazing. They have an egg chef although our one thought was he couldn’t really cope with doing more than one omelette at a time. Whenever we asked for 2 we only ever got one at a time or we just didn’t get the other. The staff were all super friendly and helpful and were always happy to help. We would definitely come back again. Knocking a star off because the cleaner took away the bathrobes after the 2nd night and never gave them back although we needed to wear them for the spa. Also, while we were there only 1 lift worked the whole time. This was unacceptable. Caused major problems with people checking out, just going down to breakfast took an age. If someone had a pram or suitcases you would have had to wait ages to try and get on again. In the end it took so long trying to get on the lift with our bags we took them all down by using the stairs.

Yelp
A nice hotel with friendly staff. Rooms are well appointed. Front desk was surprisingly disorganized for a German hotel.

Yelp
This is no Palace and certainly not the quality of a Leading Hotel. The location is great. Right across from the zoo. The bed is wonderful. The first night our tv did not work. The second day our coffee cups were left dirty and tonight our third night no turn down service and no chocolates. Plus our heat was turned up and the room was very hot. Just a few things to be aware of if you stay here. The business room has no drawers. The shower is tricky and the floor can get soaked. We did contact the desk about the cups and were given some chocolates and a note of apology. However since we had no turn down service tonight the dish was left on the desk. We had higher expectations of the Palace Hotel in Berlin

Yelp
Just an okay experience. First off - the hotel is in a good location if you want to be around the hustle/bustle of the shopping district. The staff is nice but not really warm. And unfortunately, no one seemed to give the correct directions for anything (money exchange location, train station, specific restaurants, even general suggestions such as "where can we find a good bakery?" We were upgraded for free at our check in and received a larger room but with most likely one of the worse views. We were in a room that seemed to be at the same level of the roof line so we saw machinery and other ugly stuff on top of the roof. We never opened our drapes. The room itself has lush textures and materials to it, but don't let the "cool" lighting trick you. It is completely inefficient and you end up having to switch up/down dozens of switches. Our floor lamp when switched off at night, stopped electricity into that outlet so we found out the morning after our first night that our phones were not charged. Annoying. The shower is tiny and not tiny like "non luxurious tiny" It is appx. 2'x2' and the shower head is massive for the tiny space. As an interior designer, I have no idea what designer would give the okay on such an inept design. The shower head had a thick and long hose to it that we basically had to hold back with one hand during the entire shower. We ordered room service one night and since the after hours menu was limited, we both went with Caesar salads. What we received was disgusting. Watery lettuce with bitter lemon juice? It was a complete shock and since we were both starving, we had the grated cheese on top and called room service letting them know about the issue. As with all other conversations with the hotel - it is a phone tag game. There is one button on the phone and you dial it and you have to specify were you want your call directed. Then the front desk person says "okay my colleague will call you back" 10-15 minutes later you will get a call back. In this case with the room service that happened and the guy who answered who also delivered the food said that only a manager could help us in the morning. The following morning we took 2 hours out of our day to play phone tag with different people until we got our 30 something euros back. At first they said "okay you don't have to pay!" But once we explained we had paid in cash the time of delivery then we finally received our money back. Needless to say never order a Caesar salad there - it was really the worse that we had ever had. Another issue we had was with the laundry service. My husband had about 5 pieces go to the laundry delivery. The following day when he went to ask about their whereabouts since they were not delivered on time, the front desk said that they had made a mistake on their end and it would be ready the following day (our last day in Berlin) rushed, but without a fee for us. They were still not delivered on promised time that day and when they finally came in they did not smell fresh at all. It was stressful constantly having to check in on them and worrying that they would not be ready by our departure date. Wifi was the most spotty in comparison to all the other cities we visited in Germany. Overall, communication is a huge issue with the staff, it also would not hurt to plaster a smile on your face - that goes from the front door guy to the concierge (event though I don't think during our 3 nights we ever saw an actual concierge employee, but rather a front desk guy who put it "sometimes I'm concierge too") Somewhat plusses: The penne pasta was amazing in the restaurant. I'm assuming it would only be good served there and not via room service. Our bathroom had a heated towel rack (yet it was all the way on the opposite side of the bathroom from the shower..) The spa is relaxing (but you have to pay to use the sauna and the pool was really cold - no hot tub.

Yelp
One of the best hotels we've been to. It is right across the Gedachtniskirche, with the Kudamm, the zoo and the kadewe on walking distance. The hotel staff is professional and friendly. At the reception, the concierge, the waitresses, the cleaning ladies, everyone of them is there to make your stay as memorable as they can. The rooms are big enough, soft bed and relaxing bathroom. They have a bar and a gin bar. Apart. The breakfast buffet is worth waking up for. A wide variety of juices (fresh!), cheeses, wurst (naturally), bacon, sausages and eggs, bread, cereals, fruit (fresh!), marmalades and jams, cakes,... I'd go back, if only for the breakfast :-)

Yelp
Rude & slow service. No cellular service in the room and barely any wifi signal. Breakfast was good and room was clean, but the poor customer service definitely ruined the experience.

Yelp
Fantastic visit. Close to train station, across street from Zoo and the heart of the shopping district. Great location and that is why we chose it. But they exceeded our best expectations. They upgraded us to a suite and it was spectacular. It is bigger than our apartment here in Germany. Lots of choices at breakfast which was included because w booked with Ameropa last minute deals which also means we got a great price and only paid 25 euros each for any train round trip all the way! We will be doing more of these weekends! Only complaint is they charged for the sauna/steam rooms. No problem, lots else to do

Yelp
We booked this hotel some time in advance through a Dutch booking website. The welcome was very warm. Very polite staff and a very nice lobby. We arrived 3 hours too early and the room was not ready yet. I told them it's no problem as it was my own fault to check-in too early. We were offered some free drinks and the room was ready after 30minutes. We were very surprised to get a free complimentary upgrade of the room. And the room was perfect!! Really nice and new. Also the bed was very good. The only problem was the temperature in the room. After I complained about this the staff tried to get me another room but the hotel was fully booked. They told me the problem are some heating tubes in the wall and the fact that the air conditioning is switched off in winter. (If you do something about this Palace management I give you 5 stars ;-)) In the end the staff unlocked the windows in the room so we could let some fresh air in and that helped a lot. We had a very good sleep and a very nice breakfast. We will come back for sure. The staff told me they did a lot of redecorations so I think some of the comments about the rooms below are not actual anymore.

Yelp
Very nice hotel, but expensive. The room was nice and the bathroom was a good size with both a tub and a stand up shower. They supply slippers, toiletries, and lots of towels. I only stayed here one night and did not get to see how breakfast was because my flight was too early. You have to pay for parking and wifi. The wifi is expensive and is a separate charge for each device you want to connect. There is a restaurant in the hotel and a spa I also did not have time to enjoy. It's in a pretty good location. It is a 15 minute drive to the airport and there are stores, restaurants, museums and the zoo within walking distance. It is pretty close to the train stations but we rented a car.

Yelp
My husband and i stayed here to celebrate his 40th birthday. We arrived late as our flight had been delayed flying into Schonefeld airport. We used the train to get to Zoo Station and jumped a short taxi ride from there, its easily walkable but as it was dark we opted for the taxi. Reception staff were very welcoming and friendly and we were immediately shown our room. The hotel had kindly upgraded our room to a suite which was fab, had a living area with sofa , chair and table and was really comfortable. Not overly huge just pleasantly spacious. We had a lovely bathroom with bath and shower and if you wanted you could watch the tv in there as well as in the room itself. There was a seperate dressing area which was nice and that also housed the free in room safe. There was the usual minibar but we didnt use that much. The hotel had placed champagne, fruit, nibbles and flowers in the room for my husband which i had enquired about, it cost me around £40 but well exceeded my expectations as i thought i was getting just the bubbly!. The nibbles were an extra as well from the manager. The hotel is really well placed, opposite is the Zoo (hence being near zoo station) , we didnt go in as there were plenty of other things we wanted to do. The buses stop right outside the hotel which we used quite a bit and as i said its a short walk to the UBahn and the SBahn so a great location. The leisure facilities are lovely, nice pool, again not massive but very nice and relaxing and was never crowded when we were there. They provide robes and slippers to use too. There were a number of bars , one is Sams bar, really intimate and nice for an evening cocktail and a restaurant we only used for breakfast which was amazing, anything and everything you could possibly want includng champagne if you wanted that too! Fantastic! All in all we would definately stay here again for our next visit to Berlin.
