Water Sommelier Martin Riese Wants to Help Hydrate the World - AFAR

"While serving as deputy maître d’ at a Michelin-starred hotel restaurant, Riese created an ambitious water program in 2006 featuring more than 35 mineral waters from around the world; the initiative was well received, raised his profile (he was tapped to select waters for a visiting delegation, prompting the mayor’s effusive reaction), and helped set the stage for his later book and professional certification as a mineral water sommelier." - Katherine LaGrave

This hotel was absolutely fantastic. Great rooms, outstanding breakfast and friendly staff. Located right next to a Christmas market and just opposite the zoo. The bus stop outside the hotel took us straight to all the major sights. Pretty close to perfect!

Wonderful 5-stars hotel. Fantastic breakfast. Spacious room with comfortable beds. Good value for money. Very kind staff, specially the dear employee from Sarajevo who help us a lot!

Really enjoyed my stay here for Berlin marathon. Room was very comfortable and I received super welcome gifts including macrons and a small bottle of wine. |The breakfast was superb and all the staff there were a delight especially Halima. There was so much choice and you could even help yourself to a glass of fizz on the weekends. |I enjoyed a swim in the pool and the hotel was in a good location by the zoo. |I had a slight issue securing a late checkout but this was rectified quickly. |Overall a super stay!

Great Hotel including clean and great rooms. Very good breakfast. Good stay overall, BUT no price transparency on additional services like Spa, Lounge and parking extra services. And 7 Euro for a small beer..are you kidding? Im a regular business traveller and this is the worsest value for money I ever experienced

I was in town for the marathon and enjoyed the location, which was perfect. Staff ranged from very friendly and helpful to quite gruff. Room service - both food and staff - was very good. Breakfast was good, about average for this class of hotel in a major city. Would have no issue staying here again.

Google
It was an excellent stay, 2 nights at a businnes double room. Very friendly and heplful stuff, especially at breakfast, concierge desk and reception. One of thw best breakfasts I' vw ever had, enormous variety and food quality, excellent view! Very clean room, and quiet as well. I would definitely return!

Location is perfect - rooms are nice - and its near shopping streets and loads of restuarants and small dining places. Staff and atmosphere was friendly and welcoming with a nice breakfast restaurant though a bit crammed and crowded. You should defently buy in on lounge access where they serve drinks and snacks. On the other hand you should avoid the hotel steak restaurant which is overpriced and with a ridiculous russian stripper club style

Google
Great location and lovely hotel, we got a train from the airport and that was very straight forward- im not sure I entirely agree with the tourist tax as they took 150 euros upfront as a deposit (although the tax was 75) I didn't get it back until I got home so that's euros I didn't get to spend in berlin ! We got a hop on hop off bus right outside the hotel although I feel most things can actually be walked to if your fit enough! Great trip and will 100% be back.

Yelp
A nice hotel with friendly staff. Rooms are well appointed. Front desk was surprisingly disorganized for a German hotel.

Yelp
This is no Palace and certainly not the quality of a Leading Hotel. The location is great. Right across from the zoo. The bed is wonderful. The first night our tv did not work. The second day our coffee cups were left dirty and tonight our third night no turn down service and no chocolates. Plus our heat was turned up and the room was very hot. Just a few things to be aware of if you stay here. The business room has no drawers. The shower is tricky and the floor can get soaked. We did contact the desk about the cups and were given some chocolates and a note of apology. However since we had no turn down service tonight the dish was left on the desk. We had higher expectations of the Palace Hotel in Berlin

Yelp
Just an okay experience. First off - the hotel is in a good location if you want to be around the hustle/bustle of the shopping district. The staff is nice but not really warm. And unfortunately, no one seemed to give the correct directions for anything (money exchange location, train station, specific restaurants, even general suggestions such as "where can we find a good bakery?" We were upgraded for free at our check in and received a larger room but with most likely one of the worse views. We were in a room that seemed to be at the same level of the roof line so we saw machinery and other ugly stuff on top of the roof. We never opened our drapes. The room itself has lush textures and materials to it, but don't let the "cool" lighting trick you. It is completely inefficient and you end up having to switch up/down dozens of switches. Our floor lamp when switched off at night, stopped electricity into that outlet so we found out the morning after our first night that our phones were not charged. Annoying. The shower is tiny and not tiny like "non luxurious tiny" It is appx. 2'x2' and the shower head is massive for the tiny space. As an interior designer, I have no idea what designer would give the okay on such an inept design. The shower head had a thick and long hose to it that we basically had to hold back with one hand during the entire shower. We ordered room service one night and since the after hours menu was limited, we both went with Caesar salads. What we received was disgusting. Watery lettuce with bitter lemon juice? It was a complete shock and since we were both starving, we had the grated cheese on top and called room service letting them know about the issue. As with all other conversations with the hotel - it is a phone tag game. There is one button on the phone and you dial it and you have to specify were you want your call directed. Then the front desk person says "okay my colleague will call you back" 10-15 minutes later you will get a call back. In this case with the room service that happened and the guy who answered who also delivered the food said that only a manager could help us in the morning. The following morning we took 2 hours out of our day to play phone tag with different people until we got our 30 something euros back. At first they said "okay you don't have to pay!" But once we explained we had paid in cash the time of delivery then we finally received our money back. Needless to say never order a Caesar salad there - it was really the worse that we had ever had. Another issue we had was with the laundry service. My husband had about 5 pieces go to the laundry delivery. The following day when he went to ask about their whereabouts since they were not delivered on time, the front desk said that they had made a mistake on their end and it would be ready the following day (our last day in Berlin) rushed, but without a fee for us. They were still not delivered on promised time that day and when they finally came in they did not smell fresh at all. It was stressful constantly having to check in on them and worrying that they would not be ready by our departure date. Wifi was the most spotty in comparison to all the other cities we visited in Germany. Overall, communication is a huge issue with the staff, it also would not hurt to plaster a smile on your face - that goes from the front door guy to the concierge (event though I don't think during our 3 nights we ever saw an actual concierge employee, but rather a front desk guy who put it "sometimes I'm concierge too") Somewhat plusses: The penne pasta was amazing in the restaurant. I'm assuming it would only be good served there and not via room service. Our bathroom had a heated towel rack (yet it was all the way on the opposite side of the bathroom from the shower..) The spa is relaxing (but you have to pay to use the sauna and the pool was really cold - no hot tub.

Yelp
One of the best hotels we've been to. It is right across the Gedachtniskirche, with the Kudamm, the zoo and the kadewe on walking distance. The hotel staff is professional and friendly. At the reception, the concierge, the waitresses, the cleaning ladies, everyone of them is there to make your stay as memorable as they can. The rooms are big enough, soft bed and relaxing bathroom. They have a bar and a gin bar. Apart. The breakfast buffet is worth waking up for. A wide variety of juices (fresh!), cheeses, wurst (naturally), bacon, sausages and eggs, bread, cereals, fruit (fresh!), marmalades and jams, cakes,... I'd go back, if only for the breakfast :-)

Yelp
Rude & slow service. No cellular service in the room and barely any wifi signal. Breakfast was good and room was clean, but the poor customer service definitely ruined the experience.

Yelp
We booked this hotel some time in advance through a Dutch booking website. The welcome was very warm. Very polite staff and a very nice lobby. We arrived 3 hours too early and the room was not ready yet. I told them it's no problem as it was my own fault to check-in too early. We were offered some free drinks and the room was ready after 30minutes. We were very surprised to get a free complimentary upgrade of the room. And the room was perfect!! Really nice and new. Also the bed was very good. The only problem was the temperature in the room. After I complained about this the staff tried to get me another room but the hotel was fully booked. They told me the problem are some heating tubes in the wall and the fact that the air conditioning is switched off in winter. (If you do something about this Palace management I give you 5 stars ;-)) In the end the staff unlocked the windows in the room so we could let some fresh air in and that helped a lot. We had a very good sleep and a very nice breakfast. We will come back for sure. The staff told me they did a lot of redecorations so I think some of the comments about the rooms below are not actual anymore.

Yelp
Fantastic visit. Close to train station, across street from Zoo and the heart of the shopping district. Great location and that is why we chose it. But they exceeded our best expectations. They upgraded us to a suite and it was spectacular. It is bigger than our apartment here in Germany. Lots of choices at breakfast which was included because w booked with Ameropa last minute deals which also means we got a great price and only paid 25 euros each for any train round trip all the way! We will be doing more of these weekends! Only complaint is they charged for the sauna/steam rooms. No problem, lots else to do

Yelp
Very nice hotel, but expensive. The room was nice and the bathroom was a good size with both a tub and a stand up shower. They supply slippers, toiletries, and lots of towels. I only stayed here one night and did not get to see how breakfast was because my flight was too early. You have to pay for parking and wifi. The wifi is expensive and is a separate charge for each device you want to connect. There is a restaurant in the hotel and a spa I also did not have time to enjoy. It's in a pretty good location. It is a 15 minute drive to the airport and there are stores, restaurants, museums and the zoo within walking distance. It is pretty close to the train stations but we rented a car.

Yelp
My husband and i stayed here to celebrate his 40th birthday. We arrived late as our flight had been delayed flying into Schonefeld airport. We used the train to get to Zoo Station and jumped a short taxi ride from there, its easily walkable but as it was dark we opted for the taxi. Reception staff were very welcoming and friendly and we were immediately shown our room. The hotel had kindly upgraded our room to a suite which was fab, had a living area with sofa , chair and table and was really comfortable. Not overly huge just pleasantly spacious. We had a lovely bathroom with bath and shower and if you wanted you could watch the tv in there as well as in the room itself. There was a seperate dressing area which was nice and that also housed the free in room safe. There was the usual minibar but we didnt use that much. The hotel had placed champagne, fruit, nibbles and flowers in the room for my husband which i had enquired about, it cost me around £40 but well exceeded my expectations as i thought i was getting just the bubbly!. The nibbles were an extra as well from the manager. The hotel is really well placed, opposite is the Zoo (hence being near zoo station) , we didnt go in as there were plenty of other things we wanted to do. The buses stop right outside the hotel which we used quite a bit and as i said its a short walk to the UBahn and the SBahn so a great location. The leisure facilities are lovely, nice pool, again not massive but very nice and relaxing and was never crowded when we were there. They provide robes and slippers to use too. There were a number of bars , one is Sams bar, really intimate and nice for an evening cocktail and a restaurant we only used for breakfast which was amazing, anything and everything you could possibly want includng champagne if you wanted that too! Fantastic! All in all we would definately stay here again for our next visit to Berlin.
