23 Best Hotels in Florence

"This is one of Florence’s most charming three-stars. Renaissance-era Palazzo Guadagni stands on buzzing Piazza Santo Spirito, the focal point of life in this authentic Florentine neighborhood. Formerly the quirky Pensione Bandini (where E. M. Forster’s Lucy Honeychurch would have been quite at home), it has legions of long-standing fans, the sort of independent travelers who enjoy the echoes of old Florence and opt for timeless atmosphere over five star services. The lack of restaurants isn’t a problem as there is a wide choice of eating options in the immediate neighborhood. The breakfast buffet is laid out in a powder blue dining room with background classical music; it adds to the feel that you are part of an Edwardian novel. The loggia bar has a menu of cocktails, wines, and snacks in the evenings." - Nicky Swallow, Erica Firpo

Hotel Palazzo Guadagni

"Why book? With a location at the heart of the hip Oltrarno district, rooftop views, a dreamy loggia and latter-day ‘Room-with-a-View’ vibe, this is one of Florence’s most charming three-stars. Set the scene Renaissance-era Palazzo Guadagni stands on buzzing Piazza Santo Spirito, the focal point of life in this authentic Florentine neighborhood. Formerly the quirky Pensione Bandini (where E. M. Forster’s Lucy Honeychurch would have been quite at home), it has legions of long-standing fans, the sort of independent travelers who enjoy the echoes of old Florence and opt for timeless atmosphere over five star services. On summer evenings, the arched, top-floor Loggia Roof Bar is a popular cocktail spot for droves of young Florentines much to the annoyance of the long-term guests who remember the days when it was theirs and theirs alone. It is much quieter during the day. The backstory The hotel occupies the top floors of the aristocratic owner/manager’s ancestral palazzo and is filled with antiques, paintings and prints from the family vaults. The owners have done a good job of bringing the old pensione into the 21st century without destroying its character. The rooms Each of the 15 rooms is different from the next, but all are traditionally furnished with antiques and pictures from the owners’ collection. Several have vast carved stone fireplaces, some have ceiling frescoes; most have fabulous views over terracotta rooftops to the city’s most famous monuments. If you don’t want to be disturbed by the partying in the piazza (especially lively on summer nights), book a room at the back. Food and drink The lack of restaurants isn’t a problem as there is a wide choice of eating options in the immediate neighborhood. The breakfast buffet is laid out in a powder blue dining room with background classical music; it adds to the feel that you are part of an Edwardian novel. The loggia bar has a menu of cocktails, wines, and snacks in the evenings. The neighborhood/area Lovely Piazza Santo Spirito is the hub of Oltrarno life. Overlooked by the iconic blank façade of Brunelleschi’s last church, shaded by lofty trees and lined with pavement cafés, bars, and restaurants, the piazza is home to a small daily produce market and still has an air of ‘Old Florence’ in spite of an increase in tourists in recent years. This part of the Oltrarno is known for the many artisan workshops; a wander round the narrow cobbled lanes will reveal papermakers and bookbinders, wood carvers, cobblers, furniture restorers, and cabinet makers. The serviceOwner-managed, a small team offers very personalized service; recommendations of where to eat and how to get the very best from a visit to Florence come from the heart.Accessibility No special facilities; there is an elevator up to the hotel, but steps into the entrance. Anything left to mention? There are two huge, frescoed suites on the first floor (separate from the rest of the hotel) with balconies overlooking the square." - Nicky Swallow

Beautiful hotel, lovely rooms with air conditioning and amazing views. We drove to the hotel and had some trouble getting there and the front desk staff was so incredibly helpful in getting us there! Rooftop bar had amazing views, fun drinks and a nice staff!

I had a wonderful stay at Hotel Palazzo Guadagni in January. The hotel perfectly blends historic charm with modern comfort, offering beautifully decorated rooms and stunning views over Florence. The staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive, making sure everything was perfect throughout my stay. The location is excellent—peaceful yet within walking distance of the city's main attractions. The highlight was the rooftop loggia, where I enjoyed breathtaking views over the city. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for an unforgettable stay in Florence!

We had an amazing time here! The rooms, the service, everything was as good as we could have hoped! Our room had an incredible view of the Duomo, the staff were so friendly and helpful, and drinks on the Loggia in the evening were a really special experience. Would definitely recommend if looking for somewhere to stay in Florence!

Staff were absolutely kind and professional. The location is great and only minutes away from the city center. The room was large and had a great view towards a plaza. The restaurant upstairs had a delicious breakfast. The drinks are on point & you can beat that view 😍. The only issues was the shower, it was tricky getting an adequate temperature. I look forward to revisiting in the future and seeing the other rooms.

A great hidden terrace in Sainto Spirito. Lovely roof top views giving you a different view from the usual busier central part of Florence. Cocktails were about €15 each and were tasty and well made. Accompanied by a mix of bar snacks. Booking is advisable

What a great find. Such a charming small hotel. Great location and the rooftop bar was a fantastic way to round off each day. Super friendly staff. Rooms spacious and really clean. Many antiques throughout, adding to the charm. Would definitely stay here again. Just the other side of Ponte Vecchio in Santo Spirito, so out of the tourist throng but still close. Stone’s throw from Palazzo Pitti and some great restaurants. This hotel really made our stay in Florence - fourth visit but first at the Hotel Palazzo Guadagni. We’ll definitely stay here when we return.

My wife and I had a great stay. It was beautiful having access to the terrace lounge over looking Florence. Although the staff was the best. The front desk was great and a real stand out was the breakfast and the staff. Alessio & Atish were incredibly friendly and created a lovely space with excellent breakfast items. Alessio even directed us to Piazza Santa Croce to a football match played since the Middle Ages. Amazing time. You won’t regret your stay.

This rooftop bar takes your breath away. It's in a superb location with incredible views, but the best part of it is how welcome you are made to feel. We all enjoyed 2 cocktails each that were of high quality and served by the most charismatic waiter. The setting is incredible and the whole vibe is just perfect.

Yelp
Review for the Loggia Roof Bar. Wow--stunning views, great wine, great food (appetizers), and amazing service. Everyone was friendly and it was the perfect atmosphere at the end of a long day. You'll need a reservation, but it is well worth it.

Yelp
The views! Oh the views! The Loggia Roof Bar is an absolute must (that still feels like a secret since it doesn't even have its own Yelp page). Prior to my visit here, I thought the rooftop bar at the Westin Excelsior was my one and only but I loved it here even more. Pro-tip: Make a reservation. We did not but were able to get a table for two after a 5 minute wait on a busy beautiful Sunday evening in late winter. I have a feeling you won't be so lucky in Spring/Summer. We sat right at the edge of the terrace and it was just perfect to watch the sunset, Chianti Classico in hand (They have an array of spritzes, cocktails and non alcoholic drinks), tasty snacks served with, gratis. Service is outstanding. Prices are a lot less painful than the Westin (the view is worth paying double the price). I can't think of a more perfect place to spend a couple hours in this gorgeous city!

Yelp
We stopped by for a drink on the rooftop, but it was full, so we made a reservation for one hour later. There is a little plaza with a bunch of vendors selling clothing and trinkets, so we went shopping for an hour. It was warm down in the plaza, so we were ready for a drink an hour later. It's not really a rooftop as I would imagine in my mind, with 360 degree views, but instead more of a terrace looking out and one direction. The view is gorgeous, however, and the breeze is lovely. The drink selection is quite limited, so we got a bottle of prosecco and enjoyed the view for a bit.

Yelp
Perfect spot for Apero or Tea time, its a beautiful "hidden" spot where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset on cozy "private" terrace, highly recommend!

Yelp
We arrived before the rooftop bar opened and Lorrenzo welcomed us in and offered us some wine and small bites even though the bar was closed. He was very kind and wanted us to enjoy the view which is absolutely beautiful!! Would recommend this for a wonderful afternoon drink!

Yelp
Absolute terrible hotel run by terrible people. Be aware the street cleaners are running at 5am every morning. You won't be able to sleep. Why stay at a place like this. Water absolutely cold and just a trickle we should shower for 2 days. Absolutely insanity. Any complaints they will ignore you and not help. Never never never again.

Yelp
We are absolutely loving staying at this palace. That's right, it's a palace... Not your typical hotel. Some of the furnishings appear old because, well they are. Antiques. But the place is absolutely beautiful. Very large room for a European hotel in our room has a beautiful old fireplace inside. The ceilings are around 20 feet high making this hotel RAM feel gigantic. The bathroom is great and we found everything to be very clean. But what is most fantastic is the outdoor terrace that extends around the building. It is enclosed so you may have breakfast out there or a late night drink... And a breakfast buffet is also part of the deal here. Free and delicious. If you were looking for a very quiet place or somewhere that only a tourist would stay, this may not be the location for you. It is anything but typical. as I type I can hear the sounds of a great crowd of locals gathered in the santo spirits Square just below us. It is not annoying... It's actually comforting to know that we are enjoying Italy as the locals do. The location of this guesthouse is so fantastic because there are restaurants and bars all around the square that Local Florentines actually enjoy. And it is also barely a 10 minute walk to all of the tourist sites. In fact we have enjoyed it so much that we just extended our stay another night. Okay now for a few tips. If you are arriving to the train station, just take the taxi. Do not bother trying to find the bus... It is absolutely not worth it. And a taxi ride to the hotel is only about seven euros. Trust me on this one. Also when you arrive at the address on the website, you will only find a set of large wooden doors. Press the button to the right of the doors and they will automatically open for you. Do not push. Once inside, walk straight ahead to the elevator and go to the second floor. That is where you'll find the reception desk for the hotel. Also, if you are as lucky as we are, you may end up staying in a room approximately 4 feet from the reception desk. We actually think that is awesome but it may be a bit surprising for someone who is used to a traditional hotel. Also, if you need something, know that the hotel staff is very very friendly and has been willing to help in many situations for us.

Yelp
this hotel is pure delight and beauty. each room is spacious and filled with truly unique, beautiful antiques. windows look out to typical italian roof tops, doors lead into charming over-sized bathrooms with high end european fixtures and incredible tiles and art work. the owners did not spare effort or expense to create the feeling of a luxurious country home in the heart of florence. palazzo guadagni sits at the edge of the loveliest square of florence, filled with restaurants, cafés and bars, away from too much tourism, but within steps from the bridges leading to the center. it also has one of the best roof top terraces of florence, filled with well dressed locals and international hotel guests as the sun sets in the distance bathing this wonderful space in golden light. when you enter the palazzo from the piazza santo spirito, your heart will skip a beat at the thought of the history and "story" of this palace built in 1505. you will roll your luggage into the elevator and step out into magic on the 4th floor, the magic of hotel palazzo guadagni. i have stayed here for two years in a row, and can't wait to return next year.

Yelp
We spent 3 night in this charming boutique in the city centre. The hotel is located at the top floor of an old palace in Santo Spirito square. We stayed in a rom room with frescos with a nice view of the square. Really nice the big loggia / terrace were you can relax having a glass of wine int he evening.

Yelp
Of the five (5) hotels we stayed in in Europe this was by far the worst and quite possibly the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. The air conditioners do not work, they do not function as they should except for at the front desk and in the breakfast room. When we checked in we were brought to our room, my first comment when the door was opened was that I was concerned the AC did not work, I was told that it was turned off, the staff person turned it on and informed us it would take a while to cool the room down. It never did cool the room down, we had to open the window that night, the next day we locked up the windows tight in an effort to conserve the cool nights air and left for the day, hoping the AC would maintain or improve. It did not, we awoke that evening at around 1:00 AM to sweat and a room temperature of approximately 90 degrees. We had to wait until around 2:00 am to open the window to cool it down. We raised our concern to the front desk and were informed it would be "looked at" while we were gone. When we returned at 8:00 pm our room was already 80 degrees. We again complained to the front desk, the woman working acknowledged that it was not acceptable and told us she was contacting the manager. The manager arrived and said everything was fine, when we continued to press for resolution, he got a ladder and pulled the filters claiming it was now fixed. When we complained he explained that we were Americans and he was Italian, while it was not acceptable to us, it was just fine by his standards. He claimed that all of the units in the hotel functioned the same, when I suggested we check with our neighbors to see how theirs was functioning he then threatened to call the police and have me arrested. He told us to contact the tourism department and complain to them, I took a picture of the room license (see attached) which has clearly been whited out and doctored by the hotel. He told us if we left at that point he would not charge us for the first two nights stay, we left. It was clear that he has done this before, he has no intention of fixing the AC. When I asked to see proof that the AC was looked at, via receipt (you can't go to the bathroom in Italy without getting a receipt), I was informed that the building handyman was the one who inspected it. Yet when the manager opened the unit and removed the filters it was clear the unit had not been opened for some time based on the amount of dust and material that fell from the AC unit. Bottom line, do not stay here unless you want to stay in a sauna, all of the public spaces that look awesome in the photos are useless as there is no AC, they are well over 90 degrees for most of the day. The breakfast was also very disappointing, the coffee was like folgers and their idea of fruit salad is cut up watermelon, there is a great market right below the hotel with fabulous berries, melons, etc, none of that was available for us. The Wifi only works in the public areas, again you are in a sauna. The piazza below is very popular at night with the young crowd, so it is very active and loud, and very dirty with garbage and mess in the am. Everything about our stay was sketchy at best. The reviews you see online are heavily influenced by the operators behavior, ie when we posted a negative review on trip advisor upon our return we were informed that he was now going to charge our credit card because of the review. We had to contact our credit card company and report it as fraud.
