"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? This renovated 16th century palazzo still retains its charm and history and is located right in the center of town. What's the backstory? It was once owned by the powerful papal Piccolomini family, and still has many original features, like arches and wooden ceilings. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? No charge. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? There is a fun bar in the lobby but no restaurant on site. Breakfast (included) is the standard European style and consists of lots of pastries, fruit, cheeses, scrambled eggs, and coffee. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? The central location makes it a cinch to get to all the sites.  Any other hotel features worth noting? Often renovations of older palazzos strip the space of all character. That was not the case with this hotel. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? Yes!"

The hotel appears to have once been a castle that has a lot of interesting shaped rooms and arched walls and openings. Unfortunately, our room was one that was is an area with an arched ceiling. My husband is 6 ft 1 in tall and had to bend over to walk to the window and the side of the bed by the window. And forget standing in front of the toilet. The bed was comfortable. The water pressure and hot water supply was good. The shower was very small and leaked enough to flood the bathroom - but we ultimately learned how to keep that to a minimum. Breakfast was very good every morning and the staff at the hotel were very pleasant and professional.

This hotel is a gem! Such an interesting property! Orvieto was one of our favorite stops in Italy. The hotel is very clean, and everyone working there was extremely helpful and friendly. The breakfast had a great variety of pastries, eggs, and meats, and excellent coffee. There is a little bit of street noise, but this is completely understandable given that it’s in a medieval city. (We use a white noise app on our phone to help with this!) I wonder if some of the less favorable reviews have been written by people who are used to staying in chain hotels in cities, but anyone who appreciates a beautiful small town will appreciate this unique and special property.

This is a lovely hotel in a beautiful town with incredibly helpful staff. The rooms are comfortable and have good amenities. Shower is great. Happily got us an iron etc. Taxis are hard to come by but beware the private transfer that the hotel may order you, it was €25 for a less than 10 minute journey to the station. €35-40 per 15 minute journey to a vineyard each way. It felt like extortion. This was the only sour note in our trip.

This is a very nice hotel in a good location for getting around in the lovely town of Orvieto. As has always been the case the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and did everything they could to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The breakfast service was very good notwithstanding a limited number of hardworking staff who had trouble dealing with a large tour group who showed up at the same time and wanted the same things. Our only issue with this hotel was being given a room referred to as the Annex, which was in a separate building that had private apartments unrelated to the hotel and was poorly lit and drab. The room was spacious and very private but was decorated in a very modern style that did not appeal to our particular taste. So overall I can recommend this hotel as a fine establishment that we enjoyed but advise travelers to be aware of our personal experience in the Annex.

Great location. People that work here are all nice. So why did I give it only 3 stars? Definitely not a four star hotel. The hollow core doors amplified every sound in the halls. The towels are rough and cheap, Bed linens are polyester. The bathroom was tiny. I feel that if they had called themselves a three star and the price had reflected that then I would have given them 4 stars.

Orvieto sits like an island of tuffa, floating above the valley. The city hosts one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Italy. And along its one mile corso, there are many shops and restaurants offering Umbrian dishes, like the famous cingale (wild boar). ||The Hotel Palazzo Piccolomini is ideally located at one end of the city, near the entrance from the parking area below. You step out the door and follow the narrow streets onto the main Corso.||The hotel is surprisingly large, with a fine lobby of bar and sitting areas. The room vary from small but cozy to large apartment like units. An new "underground' bar (like a cave in the tuffa rock of the city) was under construction while we were there. The people running the hotel are ready with anything you need, including tips on seeing the best of Orvieto. A very pleasant stay!

As in other reviews, rooms are basic, simple. Safe and mini fridge. Dark wood, cream walls. Basic clean compact bath. Firm bed. Nice bed cover. Stayed in room 309. Overlooked the small Piazza Ranieri but was not noisy. Used lift and then a few stairs to get to room. Very pleasant host. Nice Breakfast with lots of pastries and eggs. Easy 10 min walk to Basilica. Chapel was beautiful. ***hotel only a few feet from the escalator to the large parking lot outside the walls***. Wish we had known that so as not to have to enter ZTL zone. However, should be able to enter and exit to hotel without passing a ZTL camera as per internet info.

The hotel is perfectly located in the centre of Orvieto, walking distance to all the sightseeing. Our room was very large with a great walking shower and bath tub. Staff is very friendly. There are many stairs but staff handles suitcases. Breakfast is a nice buffet.

An agent booked us here for two nights. We had no idea what to expect, but as soon as we arrived, Jude (concierge? Porter? Parking attendant? Bartender? He did it all!) came out to greet us and take over our luggage and park the car. What a relief after a long drive. We were in a building across from the hotel, but that wasn't an issue. Literally the nicest room I've ever had in a European hotel. Huge bathroom with counter space. Opened onto a shared lounge that was GINORMOUS. Small set of steps up, then elevator. Hot water maker, Nescafé, and fridge in room. A/C (wall unit, but totally adequate). Great location just a block or so from the town square. We walked to the Pazzo S. Patrizio, funicolare, Duomo di Orvieto. I just have nothing bad to say about this place. The best part was the service though. Outstanding. Jude is the man!
