On this trip to Meteora we decided to try Trikala, a little further away from Meteora, and glad we did. This property is adjacent to the central park, the highlight of the city. This being our first trip into the city we had some difficulty finding our way there. Parking is always a real challenge in Greece and we initially parked several blocks away. The manager (owner?) personally walked with me the two blocks to our rental car and guided me through the central district to reserved parking spaces on the semi-circle road fronting the central plaza, extremely convenient. The personal attention we received was exceptional. This is a wonderful, older property with all the charm associated with that. Our room was on the upper floor, the one on the corner facing the central plaza. The ceilings literally are 13 feet high giving the sense of specialness. Long flowing curtains made the room seem like it was for VIPs only. We were a little concerned about the possible noise from the plaza as Greeks like to socialize well into the night, but this wasn't a problem. We really couldn't close the curtains completely so those sensitive to light might not appreciate this. Of the three properties we stayed at on this trip to Greece this one had the most firm mattress, but we slept decently. We didn't utilize the our outside porch as it was far better being in the middle of the action in the plaza. The bathroom is nicely decorated in modern tile, but it's as small as the rest of the bathrooms in Greece we had. In addition this was an open shower. Fortunately there's a well placed drain just outside to collect the significant amount of water overflow. Every trip to Greece it seems like my wife has to burn out at least one curling iron, even using the Greek electric outlet converter. We found a department store just outside of town to replace it. The free breakfast is terrific. It's supplied by the restaurant next door (same owner?). It's absolutely lovely sitting outside by the road next to the plaza in the morning with the very generous and delicious servings. The hallways are wonderfully decorated and museum like in interest. Americans may not particularly appreciate the smallness of the bathroom but this is typical throughout Greece. One leaves the key at the front desk when leaving and pick it up when returning. No key cards here, it's an old fashioned real key. The atmosphere of the plaza makes this a wonderful stay. We were here on a Wednesday of the third week of May with very few other residents. It's a time of significantly reduced tourism at a time when Greece's economy is desperately hurting. This property is also conveniently located close to the main restaurant area just several blocks to the north over the river, an easy walk. We ate at Palia Istoria and loved it, based on Trip Advisor reviews.
