We booked a room and was given a whole pre-war house for the four of us. It was a spacious house with 3 double bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a lounge and a kitchen equipped with cutlery and with hot and cold drinking water. There’s even a spa in the back room, and we have our own personal airwell /courtyard in the middle of the house. Upstairs are the bedrooms and a study. We enjoyed having the space to ourselves. Beds and pillows were comfy. Housekeeping services the place to keep it clean daily. The only thing is the lighting in the living room is inadequate and during the day we had to open the windows for more light but this sacrificed our privacy as passerby would look inside through the windows. It is dim at night as well. The rest of the house is fine. Minor maintenance issues such as loose taps could be improved. Would be great if the downstairs lounge was air conditioned as well.||The location is excellent in the middle of town and easily accessible to nearby attractions, eating and shopping places. The buffet breakfast while a smaller selection is excellent and delicious! |Would recommend staying here.

I recently stayed at this hotel during a business trip and was impressed by its construction and pleasant ambiance. However, I did encounter an issue with the iron provided in my room, which caused a hole in my batik shirt. This was disappointing, especially since my first shirt was ironed without any problems. I hope management can look into this matter to prevent similar incidents in the future. Overall, I enjoyed my stay and appreciate the hospitality.

A stunning hotel with great staff. Check in was smooth. We had to catch a 6am flight the following morning and the lady at the front desk helped me book an early morning taxi and offered us breakfast to take with us! The room was so beautiful and spacious, with a balcony. Like other reviews, the jacuzzi’s tub has stains on them and the shower pressure wasn’t good. But these weren’t the main problem for me. The main problem was that because the building is old, you can hear the crack of everything whenever your neighbour upstairs moves. I had to wake up at 3am the following morning to leave for the airport so I went to bed at around 10:30pm, just to be woken up by my upstairs neighbour an hour later, walking up and down their room with elephant footsteps for 3 HOURS. I am extremely disappointed with how my experience has ended because we booked this hotel as a last luxurious stay before we leave Malaysia. With my eyes wide open after having woken up by the foot stomping noises, I’ve thought of a few suggestions for the hotel: 1) when checking in, please let guests know to be mindful of how they walk in the room because of the cracking wooden floorboard 2) have signs around the hotel to notify guests to keep the noise down and think about others 3) have a policy for when guests complain about this issue, to avoid an awful experience that I had, resulting in no sleep at all It’s such a shame that I experienced this. I hope to come back again with a better experience.

Review on 17 Oct: Disclaimer: I have not stayed here yet. I soon will though. I came to the front office and asked if I could see a room kn Clarke House as I wanted to bring my father who had mobility issues there. They obliged and Muktar ( wow, he’s been with this hotel for 13 years ) took me for a Quick Look, and even advised me on which room number to request if I wanted single beds. I checked the stairs and while there are quite a few steps as this is a tall house, an elder can hold on to the sturdy banister. The bathroom is not slippery and should be fine for the older guests too. Plus, for Clarke House, the older guests can walk to breakfast using the garden exit .. Thank you so much to the front office staff for being so kind. I am confident my octogenarian parents will enjoy a stay there in Nov. Review on 17 Nov: finally a chance to stay in Clarke House. Wonderful stay for 2 nights! Breakfast with the professional, NZ trained Molly at the helm was enjoyable - she helped sort out a few items for my senior-citizen Dad. Thank you Molly for the hospitality! The front desk staff were equally friendly and helpful. The only not so good thing I can say is that the jacuzzi needed better cleaning ( leaves ) which is easy and that the toiletries / shower gel is funny smelling, so bring your own.

Very strategically located, retro theme hotel with friendly staff and large room. Very clean and spacious, and comfortable bed and pillow. But the wooden floor can be creepy at times. Got a good deal through Agoda. There are so many choices of food nearby, all walking distance, and the Chowrasta Market only 5 minutes walk from the hotel. The only downside is that you have to park on the roadside.

Hotel with no frills. Great location. Room quite spacious. Extra bonus for the jacuzzi in the bathroom. Breakfast has not much variety but was tasty. Only thing is carpet and cushions on the sofa might be a bit dusty. I was sneezing often as I was sensitive with dust. Not much can be said of the TV as it used some kind of antenna so program on TV always hanged. other than that, stay was quite enjoyable. Near to many heritage sites and all was within walking distance and we don't spend much time in the room anyway.

First of all, I like the hotel. It is at a great location, great price and the breakfast was better than my expectation. Parking was reasonable easy to find, service was okay. My only peeve with my room is that it has an open air well into the ground floor of my unit. Mosquitoes is one thing, noise is another thing but the worst is the dust. The floor is perpetually dirty because it’s open to environment. 3 nights and 3 times of housekeeping made no difference. I bought a slipper to wear in the house after 2 days. Either clean more thoroughly or close the air well. It’s not a great feeling if my feet is perpetually dirty walking inside the hotel room.

It’s normal to meet one or two issues when you stay at a hotel but not this many! Here is the few issues that I’ve encountered during my stay in October: 1. Hotel selling point is jacuzzi and guest pay extra for this facility. However it’s full of stain!! The front desk staff has sent a cleaner to clean it but the cleaner told me those stain on the jacuzzi are not stain and try to persuaded the jacuzzi not dirty at all. That’s the best joke I’ve ever heard in my life. The front desk staff offered us to check the other rooms and will allow us to change the room, but all the jacuzzi condition in every single room was same, dirty with stain. 2. Found a used tissue under the table. I’ve never encountered this kind of bad hygiene experience in any other hotel before! 3. The worn-out sofa is full of stain. And the hotel use a clothe to covered the stain. I doubt if they have even wash that clothe. 4. The carpet is worn and damaged. 5. Every corners are covered in dust. 6. The temperature of the shower was not stable. The temperature suddenly cold and suddenly hot. 7. Early morning 7am I was waken up by the pungent smell of cooking odour and it’s last for almost 2 hours. 8. We request for additional key card but the front desk staff refused to give. We were asking the staff how the other person enter the room if they do not have the key card, the staff answered that just tell the font desk and they will open the door for us. I’ve been asking the same question 3 times to the front desk: ‘You just open the door if someone ask you to open? Without any verification!?’ First answer, the staff said he can recognise every single guest, second he was answering he will ask the room number, third time he finally answered he will check the guest name before open the door. Seems there is very serious security issue in this hotel. It seems that many guests have raised similar complaints on the bad hygiene, worn furniture and facility maintenance over the past few years, but there are no improvement seems have been made.

Yelp
A classic Penang experience in a location that can't be beat. The hotel comprises of large hotel rooms and spaces in keeping with Penang architecture. Stylishing appointed, the furnishings tastefully mix an era gone by with modern comforts and design. Hospitible touches such as afternoon tea and wine hour greatly add to the customer experience. A wonderful stay that enhanced my taste of Georgetown and all it has to offer.

Yelp
Rooms are filled with old Chinese furniture and decor, but bathroom is super modern with jacuzzi and multiple headed shower. Great Breakfast assortment of Malay favorites and Western food. Staff super helpful and friendly. Only downside is that it's a bit of a walk from old town on a hot day, 2km. Grabcar to there is only 2-4rm, and there is a free 11am shuttle to Armenian St. Highly recommend.
