I have been traveling the world for over 50 years, and one of my deepest concerns has been the gradual erasure of charm from hotels. Modern standardization has stripped many places of their individuality, replacing history and character with sterile, interchangeable rooms. When I travel, I make a conscious effort to stay in hotels that honor their heritage and allow me to feel connected to the city’s past, rather than those rushing to conform to a modern, uniform aesthetic.
With that philosophy in mind—and without restricting myself by budget—I chose to stay at the Petit Palais du Charm in Milan, fully aware that a historic property may not be “perfect” in the conventional sense, nor in every physical detail relative to its price point. I was fortunate to visit during the week before Christmas, when both the hotel and the city were filled with a warm, festive ambiance.
The reviews I read beforehand were, by and large, accurate. For my wife and me, our stay was deeply meaningful—personal, warm, and genuinely delightful, despite being a bit quirky at times. The hotel’s small staff created an intimate, welcoming atmosphere that makes guests feel truly cared for in this tired yet still welcoming palazzo. Its location allows for easy walking access to all major sights, and the history of the building is extraordinary, having once been part of a 17th century convent complex which sat along a canal that disappeared nearly a century ago.
I was not disappointed in any way. Our stay was truly delightful and embodied the very definition of a hotel de charme—something increasingly rare and deeply appreciated.
