What a wonderful stay; Portinari Hotel was such a highlight for us (family of four, with adult children, sharing a room). Receptionist (and former Owner) Anna took such great care of us. The room was very clean, and well-cared-for. There was a carnival in the plaza that we so enjoyed, but we slept peacefully because the sound-proof windows were incredible. The champagne and chocolates we ordered were waiting for us on arrival, and we highly recommend treating yourself this way. The box quantity was so plentiful - we ended up purchasing this brand as gifts for family! Breakfast included a hot breakfast of eggs, breakfast meats, wafffles with wonderful toppings (nutella, jams, assorted flavored morsels, yogurts, wonderful breads, pastries, juices, and a self-serve coffee machine with many flavorful options. Location is a 12-15 minute walk to/from the train station - take the park path to avoid rolling luggage over so many pavers. Access to the main plaza and tower is a 12-15 minute walk with busy shopping streets all along the way. We felt very safe our entire time in Bruges.
There are restaurants on the plaza. Beware of surprise requests after the meal to pay with cash instead of credit. A waiter at nearby De Hanze surprised us by insisting on cash instead of Visa, including calling me away from the table into the bar area. I gave some and charged the rest, but realized after that this was a hustle. In hindsight I regret not getting angry at the table and calling the waiter out in front of others. Infuriating. It's too bad, because the food was excellent.
A favorite restaurant was La Gondola, Oude Burg 22, 8000 Bruges, Belgium. It was nothing from the street, but it was a pleasant dining room inside with wonderful service and a plentiful meal.
