Here’s what you NEED to know:
As avid travelers, my wife and I have to say this trip has been a revelation. Asturias is astonishing in its own right, and Posada del Valle Asturias does an incredible job of embellishing the experience. Run in a most personal, service-oriented, yet thoroughly professional way by Ernest and Annelize, this lovely little inn is exactly the escape you need in our currently anxiety-ridden world. If you, like us, are done with just another AirBnB-type vacation, you need this experience of charming hospitality at the hands of gentle, attentive hosts.
Here’s what you WANT to know:
It is abundantly clear, from the minute you arrive, that this is managed by a family that knows both the basics and the refinements of hospitality.
Every aspect has been though of: knowing that we are from New York and on an extended visit, they assigned us one of the larger (Sueve) rooms to help with our rather copious amount of luggage - and as if to underscore the spirit of service, Ernest himself helped us carry our bags up to our room, which was welcome :-)!
The breakfast is Continental, which is an adjustment for us, used as we are to large, American-style breakfasts with eggs and bacon ... however, given the generous spread and excellent quality of the buffet, including high-end charcuterie and local artisanal cheeses, we didn't miss any of it!
Breakfast done, we were well fortified for the day. One day we did the slightly challenging Covadonga Lakes (Picos de Europa) circuit: two and a half hours of medium-level hiking. Next day, we checked out Ribadesella, a lovely little fishing town less than 30 minutes by car away from the hotel. Both were lovely days, helping us work off the breakfast and rewarding us with a great appetite for dinner.
Dinner is an event unto itself - a full, four course meal, creatively imagined, lovingly crafted and attentively served. Full marks, Ernest and Annelize, for making sure our evenings were just spectacular, especially with the special cocktails of the day :-)!
One little event just exemplifies their service orientation. I mentioned to Annelize that we needed some laundry done ... and guess what, she suggested she can take it home! That would obviously have been an imposition, so I didn't agree ... but it was sweet nevertheless.
All in all, a truly excellent stay, made better by this lovely couple who live - and love - the wonderful art of hospitality.
