Yelp
For a themed hotel Praktik Vinoteca exceeded my expectations. The theme is wine, so it's fitting that you are greeted with a complimentary glass of wine at check in. The staff is very friendly and all speak great English, which helped us out a lot.
The hotel is extremely conveniently in the center of the Eixample, 2 blocks from the Passeig de Gràcia station as well as Illa de la Discòrdia & Casa Batlló. Besides being near some major attractions, Pg de Gràcia has some great (window) shopping as well. This is considered the most expensive street in Barcelona (and Spain). The avenue goes all the way down to Plaça de Catalunya, where you can find that many of the cities attractions meet- Barri Gòtic/Gothic Quarter, La Rambla-Rambla de Cataluña, El Raval.
The lobby is very charming and as soon as you walk in, you can't help but want to try all the various wines they have on display. But I guess that's the whole point of a wine-themed hotel. They offer a great selection of wines and are very knowledgeable. You can bring your wine up to your room, or chill out in the lovely lounge area (which doubles as the breakfast buffet in the morning).
They offer free use of two public computers and printers, which came in handy since we had not bought any of our tour tickets online. The staff highly recommended (pushed) that we get etickets to avoid the lines (THANK YOU!).
There is a cozy lounge area that opens up to a patio in the back. They offer a breakfast buffet of eggs, pastries, bacon, and fruit for something short of $10 per person, which is very reasonable. There's also some fruits, cereal, milk, and orange juice. They have a Nespresso machine with a variety of coffees, as well a nice selection of teas. After breakfast, it's just a common room where you can hang out until it closes at 11pm.
The actual hotel room is small- and when I say small, I really mean tiny. Like one of those dorm room shares back home in NYC, except you get your own bathroom (kind of??). It seems like all the rooms have a very similar, if not identical, layout. you walk into a teeny foyer/hallway and there are three doors. Two glass doors lead to the toilet and sink, and the shower on either side of you. Yes, glass. If you are staying with your s/o and shy about using the toilet, this is NOT the place for you, sorry.
There are french doors (tiny, because it's french doors in the size of a regular doorway) leading to the bedroom (bed area, really). There is a building open closet space, which consists of a drawer, a handling rod, a shelf with a safe, and a shelf up top. This was room enough for us to put our clothes, because honestly, how much closet room do you need while on vacation? Our last hotel had what felt like an entire house's worth of closet space and we ended up not using any of it because it was too big and we were afraid we would forget stuff in it.
There is a wall mounted TV, a trash bin, and small nightstands on each side of the bed. There is another set of tiny french doors that lead out to a mini-balcony (really, really, really mini. You can just step out on it and then you can't take any more steps).
This is a small hotel room- but you are in the middle of a big city, off one of the largest, most famous, and definitely the most expensive avenues in all of Barcelona. I think the space was just fine, and we had 1 29" luggage, 2 carry ons, and 2 full camera backpacks.
I have to add that the bf and I were still really sick when we stayed here, but the staff was so accommodating. At around midnight, I went down and asked if they could sell me some tea- and the front desk staff took me to the lounge, unlocked it for me, and said, here, have all the tea/honey you need and please lock up when you're done. I know that tea is not expensive, but when you're feeling like crap, these small gesture mean the world to you.
Also, as we were checking out, the sommelier let us purchase wine to take home to the states (we had not been able to drink out entire stay there- and the prices are SO good). They even have these nifty wine shaped bubble packing bags that seal up to prevent damage to the bottles. Our wine arrived home in one piece.
All that said, I have to knock off 1 star for the only thing that irked me- thin walls. I don't mind the small space, lack of bathroom privacy, etc. But it would have nice if they had invested a little more in the walls. At one point, I was tempted to call front desk to complain, but I figured all the rooms were the same and there'd be no point.
I would still definitely recommend this hotel- the price is reasonable and it's so convenient. Even with the bit of occasional noise, I would go back just because of the super charming decor and incredible staff.
