I'm based in Thailand and have been visiting Mandalay at least twice a year for the past decade plus. I tried several other hotels before finally discovering the Hotel Queen on 81st Street. I like the location, but more importantly I like everything about the hotel. The rooms are reasonably priced, coming with working AC, hot water (something that some hotels are lacking!), a good choice of cable TV channels, and that all important generator (for the times when the power goes out --- still a frequent happening in Myanmar!).||||In addition to those factors, the staff at hotel are fabulous. The workers at the front desk are always very polite and helpful, and the guy in charge of housekeeping and room service, Kyaw Zin Tun, always goes out of his way to make sure that my requests are handled. Kudos also to the restaurant on the top floor. They offer a very good buffet breakfast. I'm not one of those Westerners that like a Western breakfast (hey, I'm in Myanmar, I want to eat the local food!) so appreciate the range of noodles and rice dishes, especially their excellent monhinga. Very tasty! I've also dined there for lunch and breakfast and the entrée dishes are also of very high quality. They also have a very good band that plays there in the evening. ||||What more can I say about this fine hotel? They offer free bicycle rentals to guests, have wi-fi in the rooms (or a computer downstairs that you can use), have a travel agent with money exchange service in the lobby, and offer the sort of friendly personal service that is so common in Myanmar. The Hotel Queen honestly feels like a home away from home.
