La Sommita, Ostuni, Puglia, Italy - Explore & Book

"Ostuni is the most beguiling of Puglia's white towns; La Sommita is a hidden gem on its summit. You walk up through narrow flagged alleys, past Cycladic-white houses and Baroque churchfronts, to the hulking Aragonese cathedral at the top. Hidden to one side is the hotel, built around a 16th-century palazzo. A glassed-in arch flanked by potted cacti opens onto a succession of cool vaults, which house a remarkably sophisticated restaurant - one of Puglia's few Michelin stars. Outside is a Moorish-style walled garden with citrus trees, a dipping pool and parapets looking over olive groves to the shimmering Adriatic beyond. Follow twisting stairs up to an arched 4m-high salon, with gargantuan armchairs and spherical chrome speakers courtesy of Milan-based homeware label Culti. Off this lie the 15 rooms and suites, each a pared-down haven of meditative neutrals with silky stone floors and contemporary, clean-lined furniture. Some have vaulted ceilings hewn from the rock, others steep steps up to a mezzanine sleeping platform. All are cocooning and blissfully silent (the old town is traffic-free). With a small spa downstairs, a superb gelaterie on your doorstep, and several beaches within 30 minutes' drive, it makes a great hideaway for couples and food lovers alike. Highs A magnificent position at the peak of historic Ostuni, gazing over olive groves to the Adriatic coast; sunsets here are spectacularThe best food we tasted in Puglia: delicate flavours, inventive presentation and great value Luxurious rooms, with extremely comfy beds and pampering bathrooms. One has a working fireplace; another a circular Jacuzzi tubBeautiful courtyards and terraces, scattered with shaded daybeds and flickering lanterns An excellent location for exploring Puglia: sandy beaches, historic trulli and the Torre Guaceto nature reserve are all less than 30 minutes away Lows The interiors might be a little too minimalist for some You can't drive to the door, though they operate a tuk-tuk transfer and porter system in summer Don't plan on swimming in the tiny pool; it's more of a leg-cooler (or an excuse to show off your tan) No twin bedrooms (only double)" - Michael Cullen

La Sommita was very special. Perfect location in old, quaint part of Ostuni. Staff was wonderful, friendly, very helpful. The breakfasts were very good and with variety. We took a cooking class at the hotel with head chef, Guiseppe, where we made orecchiette and tarallis. He was very personable and a great teacher. It was our favorite activity in Ostuni. The meal that he made with the pasta we prepared was maybe the best meal we had in Ostuni. Our room was small (but is an old palace) and somewhat spartan, but the bed was comfortable, and we had a great view towards the coast. We did have some variability of water temperature in the shower, but that didn't bother us too much. The grounds were very nice. We had a bottle of wine on the terrace at dusk one day --- a must with the view. Parking is nearby --- a 12-minute walk or the staff will take you back and forth in a small, motorized cart they use to navigate the small streets in the old town.

Best location in town with an exquisite view.|This hotel is backed up to the cathedral and has one of the original entrance ways from the cathedral in it. |It has a beautiful courtyard in the back with a hot tub, and places to lounge. It has a second floor terrace where we watched the sunset. |Rooms are clean, beds are comfy and robes are super soft and luxurious. |There is a spa with a Turkish bath and Hammam.|The staff were super friendly and helpful. We were biking and they handled storage for us.

I don't understand how this hotel can get anything other than a 5* review. Perched near the top of Ostuni, with great views, and attractive grounds, this was a perfect place to stay. The hotel staff are exceptionally welcoming and helpful. While not in the busy season, we were driven back and forth to the train station on demand. This may not be the case in peak season as they do mention transportation to a meeting point outside of the restricted area.|We had dinner at the restaurant which is also deserving of 5 stars. Great breakfast, so much so that we never opted for the available eggs. Very interesting choices! I never like to single any one person out as all of them were wonderful but their customer experience manager (don't know his real title) was everywhere, doing whatever was required to make this an outstanding stay.

This hotel is a splurge and worth every penny. It has everything you would like in a resort located in Ostuni at the very top of the city. It Has a nice patio and area with a jacuzzi for relaxing - i unfortunately could not use it due to the weather. When we entered the city we called for directions and they sent someone to meet us and bring our car to a secure parking location and delivered us directly to the hotel. It was around 10 am and the manager brought us to the restaurant and provided us with a breakfast buffet immediately! We were treated very well by all personnel-the hotel is very upscale

The staff is amazing - so friendly, professional and helpful. The hotel is BEAUTIFUL! Breakfast in the garden was magical!! The location in Ostuni is perfect - on a quiet, private street, but in the nicest part of the city. Evening cocktail on the roof-top terrace over-looking the olive groves and the ocean was outstanding!!! Cielo Restaurant is elegant and delicious, with an outstanding wine list. Definitely no better place to stay in Ostuni. We hope to return soon!

This charming hotel is located in the center of the pedestrian-only part of town and commands an amazing view over the lands below. However, the warmth and hospitality of the staff tie it all together. No fake smiles here, all genuinely welcoming.

From the moment we arrived we entered a world or luxury. The hotel decor is beautiful with artwork and furniture of the highest quality. Food perfect at every time with perfect wines to choose from. The staff all seemed genuinely happy to be working there.

Ostuni is a great place to stay for a visit to beautiful Puglia which is quite a change from the busy cities of the North and the West. And La Sommita is the perfect place - five star hospitality and experience.

Yelp
Pros: 1. Location. Highest point in Ostuni with great views Old character. Simple. Calm quiet. Small boutique relais chateau hotel. Walk and explore the town from your doorstep 2. Room size good. Excellent detail of shelf at base of bathroom mirror as incorporated into the mirror. This freeing up counter space. High ceilings light. Design was lovely and functional. Hard surface floor. So glad to see no carpet in hotel rooms 3. Private view balcony from our room. We loved room 8 Soleil. Slept so well. Am curious the history of the hotel and would have loved to learn about it. I should have inquired. 4. Our section of hotel had large private upstairs open room, high ceilings and larger balcony too 5. Service ! Daniela. Francesca. Gianni /Giovanni. Restaurant/breakfast. Front desk. Welcome drink fresh unusual made by Daniela I think. Fulvia C does a lovely job as the GM. Our many thanks to all at front desk to housekeeping and others that we didn't see but who surely worked to make our experience so very lovely 6. Quiet. Private. Nice especially for famous people who want the quiet family time with privacy. (Don't ask me who!) 7. Breakfast good. Fresh fruit. Ordered some veggies sautéed (no egg). But eggplant drenched in olive oil so not good. Yet zucchini was. No fresh cucumber. Would have loved fresh cucumber and riper tomato especially for veggie and vegan guests Fresh juice but consider adding fresh veggie/fruit mix wirh ginger. Great service. They remembered our capuchino oat milk preference. Pastry chef first day had a fabulous little chocolate muffin 8. Excellent linens Good bedding etc very clean. 9. Nice location to go and explore the area. Advisement: (not much of any cons to report - basically overall excellent!) so maybe just some ideas .... 1. During heatwave kindly have more water available. My understanding is that hotels are supposed to provide water when the tap is not ok to drink. 2. Parking not available on site so you park at their lot offsite and wait for pick up. But was fairly prompt. Fun little three wheel classic Ape ( tuck tuck). All part of the charm. Parking is not included in room rate However no cars in the city means a more special experience :) 3. Provide guests with directions to parking as gps not work well for finding it - probably due to some new roads Update : Noticed past reviews said no bar but they just have added one. It is more of a stand up and order on site. Highly recommend. We would return.

Yelp
My new home away from home when in Ostuni. Fabulous 5* service. Warm and genuine folks working there. I absolutely love their morning breakfast. And the car service into town is such a plus. Rooms are lovely. My room had an amazing shower as well.
