Hotel Restaurante Antiguo Palacio De Atienza

The Palacio is nested in the middle of the old village of Atienza. It is quiet and comfortable. IT was too late in the year to try to pool, but the yard was a peaceful setting.||||Our room was spacious enough and the bed comfortable. ||||We also had dinner on site: we were served tapas style, and excellent dinner including foie gras with an orange glaze. Only dessert was underwhelming (watermelon or ice cream) after an all homemade meal. ||||Breakfast was too skimpy for cyclists, and also the owners only had one staff to handle a group of 25, which was not enough.

Atienza is a small hilltop village on the Route of El Cid, we stayed here having ditched Penafiel campsite as it had too many flying friends and was a place to break our journey on the way to Zaragoza. We're really pleased we found it, we took the "scenic" route which sent us through some amazing scenery but over a lot of hills. Beautiful but hard work in an '80's VW with no power steering on the switchbacks. ||Anyway, the hotel is located in the middle of the picturesque village, high up on the hill with a view down over the plains from the garden. The rooms were surprisingly modern, pretty big with a nice bed, minimal decor and modern bathroom separated by a frosted glass wall from the room. ||We stayed in room 2 (up the stairs and around to the left) which had views as per the garden across the valley floor. Others may have looked out onto the street which was dead quiet so no worries with traffic noise. ||The owner was a really nice guy and despite my virtually non existent Spanish made the effort to be helpful, he took us into the lounge and set up Google translator in case we had any questions not in my phrasebook. ||The pool was small but perfect for cooling off and the owner definitely takes pride in his garden which was lovely. ||Overally the staff were OK, friendly enough with a tip for a late night bar if we wanted it but this is a tiny village in Spain. Despite the hotel decor the service was a bit "local". That sounds awful but you feel your in some bijou hotel in the Cotswolds and I don't think it's right to expect the same level when you're in such a location. That said I couldn't fault anything they did. ||The one downside is the food, the first night I had a steak and chips and my wife had lamb chops. Both cooked well but simple food is what they're good at, the next night I had a bottle of wine I'd been given as a gift to try and they allowed us to drink it with no corkage which was good and I had the menu Degustation. Not silly money at 20 Euro but the standard wasn't really there, Stick simple is my advice, the steak on the first night was perfectly cooked. ||Overally a very pleasant place in the middle of nowhere and the pool is a perfect place to chill out. Great for history buffs too with the castle and links to Cervantas and El Cid

What a little gem! Family run. Lovely people. My husband "helped" the dad with his lawnmower - no language just a lot of hand waving and laughter! The son has English and is so helpful. The mum is the chef (I think) and what a chef. The food was sublime and more than adequate - I took a recipe down it was so good. The rooms were spotless and quiet but perhaps need a little upgrading? The gardens will be lovely when Dad has sorted out his lawnmower :-) We still managed a drink or two in them whilst the dog wandered around. Atienza is a fabulous, ancient town with views all around.

Atienza is a tiny village that most probably bypass. A pity, as it has some real charm and some wonderful streets/buildings. Plus the most amazing views from the ruined castle above the town across the parched surrounding landscape. The hotel was absolutely fine (once the very helpful staff changed me from a second (top) floor room - built into the roofline with just a tiny window at floor level - very claustrophobic) if perhaps a little pricey for somewhere off the main track.

Even if it's a nice place and good located, being a 17th century building , the decoration in general could be much better and adapted to this historic building. Strange conbination of old and modern fit in the rooms. Did not try the food. At e 30km you have the Jadraque lake where you can have a swim

Lovely place, good reception, excellent breakfast (well worth the price). A Comfortable room (1st.floor,we were) huge panorama, overlooking beautiful countryside.

Awful service and room. Didn't seem to want to be in the hotel business
