We spent six nights at the Riu Palace Macao in Punta Cana, and overall, I wish I had taken some of the other reviews more seriously, as I probably would have chosen a different destination.
Pros first:
The parties were absolutely amazing. If partying is the main reason you’re booking an all-inclusive, Riu definitely delivers. The Neon Party, Jungle Party, and White Party were a blast and far exceeded our expectations. The beach was also beautiful—yes, there’s always some seaweed, but it was minimal, and some days there was none at all.
The food was another highlight. We were warned by many people not to eat fresh food, seafood, or ice in the Dominican Republic, but we ate everything and never got sick once. The buffet staff were friendly and pleasant, and overall the dining experience was great.
We had a junior swim-up ocean view suite. I loved having the swim-up pool, and it was kept very clean. We also did not see a single bug anywhere in our room or around the resort, which was a pleasant surprise since I was expecting otherwise.
Now the cons:
The liquor was honestly awful—the lowest quality I’ve ever experienced at an all-inclusive resort. It tasted like rubbing alcohol, which was surprising given we’ve stayed at resorts in other countries and never experienced anything that bad.
The room had a strong, musty smell for the entire trip. When we got home, every fabric item we brought—clothes, bags, everything—smelled terrible, which was extremely disappointing.
The front desk staff really turned me off. They were rude, short, and overall not pleasant. There was no warmth or friendliness, and they rarely smiled. In contrast, the buffet staff were great.
We were also surprised by how little English was spoken around the resort, especially among staff. This isn’t meant to sound entitled—we’ve traveled to countries like India, Jamaica, and Costa Rica, where communication was much easier. It just made things more difficult than expected.
Lastly, the entertainment staff was just okay. Some of them didn’t smile once the entire trip and seemed uninterested or unhappy to be there, which affected the overall vibe.
Final thoughts:
If you’re booking for the parties, food, and beach, you’ll likely have a great time. However, between the poor liquor quality, musty rooms, and unfriendly front desk staff, this resort missed the mark for us, and we wouldn’t return.
