I am not exaggerating when I say this was the WORST dining experience my husband and I have had in our six years of married life. We've been to many parts of the world, places both casual and Michelin-starred. Roter Hahn simply failed on every level of the dining experience.
We arrived around 7:30pm for a table without a reservation. One was found outside, which we wanted, though guests had just left. The solution was simply to clear the plates - but the waitstaff never came back to clear the detritus from the table top.
Another ten minutes later, we are finally given menus, and my husband orders a Martini, which the waitress didn't recognise (it's a CLASSIC drink). She seemed confused and noted down "Martini spritz," at which point he said not to bother and was going to just get wine. I ordered a negroni - not on menu, but also a common drink - and the reply was that the bartender might not know what that was. This is supposed to a top-end hotel/restaurant in a regional hub. The disappointments continued. We then placed our orders for appetizers and main courses.
It took nearly 30 minutes on a non-busy Monday night for our drinks to arrive in obscenely large beach-cabana sized glasses with (gasp) enormous glass straws - by a different server, only after I had complained about the delay. Our server finally came back, not with our appetizers, but an unordered amuse-bouche which was a "gift" from the kitchen. One, this "gift" was unexplained - why were we getting it? Was it because our orders were already beyond late? We'll never know. Second, it was simply toasted baguette bread with Bavarian cheese spread (Obazda). Hardly what one considers a reconciliatory move.
I nearly despaired of getting our bottle of wine and food until an hour after we ordered, the plates arrived. My husband had ordered the calf schnitzel with asparagus and butter; I had ordered the "Haustopf" with beef and chicken in a mushroom cream sauce. More problems here:
-the asparagus was way overcooked;
-hollandaise sauce instead of butter was brought to the table;
-for some reason the schnitzel had been cut into three small strips and panfried to look like fish and chips, I guess - why is beyond me.
For my part:
-I had requested the beef be medium. It was cooked well done;
-the portion I received was half the size of what one could get literally across the little square at Gravenreuther in Regensburg for the same price.
After so many errors, no apologies, and long waits, I could no longer enjoy a meal - which ended up costing us 116 Euros. Fortunately, we had a gift certificate from a friend to offset this jawdroppingly bad meal, but when I mentioned to the wait staff that this was literally the worst meal I've had since living in this city, again: no apology, nothing taken off the bill, just: would you like to pay with cash or card?
We're never going back and recommend you not waste your time, taste buds, or taxpayer euros on this establishment.
