The 10 Best Hotels in the Dolomites to Book Now - AFAR

"Hedwidge Mumelter and her daughters, Nadja and Claudia, are behind the family-run Eco Hotel Saltus, a 26-room hotel that opened in 2019. The three women crafted Saltus with an eco-conscious ethos that focuses on lifestyle and nature. Its location in San Genesio is on the Salten, Europe’s highest larch plateau, which takes the starring role in the Saltus experience. This is a place that aspires to help you live better. Saltus has a robust program of activities focused on holistic living, healthy eating, and other practices that benefit the body and mind, including meditation, painting, cooking, and forest bathing. Architecturally, the hotel was designed to be a contemporary lodge that fades into the surrounding nature through simple lines, materials such as responsibly sourced local stone, lime clay, and larch wood, and soft colors that reflect the hues of the Dolomites. From $310" - Erica Firpo, Laura Itzkowitz

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Saltus and would 100% recommend. We are already planning our next visit! |We came across the hotel via a Google ad (I presume my phone had worked out I liked trees, mountains and spas) and it was perfect for us. |From the start our expectations were exceeded when we emailed reception to ask about getting a transfer from Bolzano airport and Lena proactively offered to arrange for some supper to be delivered to our room, as the restaurant would be closing around the time we arrived in the evening. We really appreciated this and it meant our holiday got off to a great start. |We stayed in a standard room which was like a spacious, heavenly tree house. None of the normal clutter that you find in most hotel rooms (mirrors everywhere, furniture you don't use etc.). Just a relaxing, muted design and a spectacular view of the treetops, hills and mountains. The room was also practical with plenty of storage, a well thought-out bathroom/shower area etc. |We hadn't told anyone it was my birthday but they must have figured it out from our check-in information and a card and chocolate had been hung on our door. |The restaurant was a highlight. The a la carte service at breakfast and dinner was very efficient, fast and friendly and the food was delicious. We would recommend the half board option - we booked bed and breakfast only in advance as we wanted to keep our options open but ended up dining in the restaurant every night because it was so lovely. (I'm not sure if there are other options in the village as we didn't look into this). It would probably have been a bit more cost-efficient to have had the half board but regardless we felt the food was great value. |The staff were all very kind and eager to help whilst also giving us space to relax. |Another highlight was the forest bathing led by Hedwig, one of the owners. The experience was so thoughtfully put together: basically a series of guided meditations in the woods to evoke a sense of inner peace and connection to nature. Very understated. I can imagine it would be enjoyable and accessible to even those who are new to things like yoga and meditation. |The infinity pool was wonderful also.|We didn't have a car with us but were able to go on plenty of stunning hikes starting from right outside the hotel. Within minutes you can be up in the hills without a soul around you and only the sounds of cowbells. The nature is incredible and we were excited to see some stunning wildlife such as hummingbird hawk moth and red squirrel.|We were given a free transport pass by the hotel which we used to get the bus to Bolzano to explore the town and it also gave us free access to museums. We loved going to see Otzi, the ice mummy that is 5,000 years old and was found perfectly preserved nearby, great for archaeology geeks like us and also unexpectedly moving. |The only piece of constructive feedback would be related to the warmth of the communal areas in the hotel. I understand and respect the decision not to have AC due to environmental reasons. I feel the heat very easily although this is a matter of personal preference. Even in late September the restaurant and lobby areas were too hot for me and quite uncomfortable and would benefit from opening doors/windows to let the breeze in. For this reason we would probably not go back in the summer. This was not a problem in our room however as we could turn the heating off, open the balcony door and there was a screen to stop insects getting in. |Overall we were absolutely delighted with our stay and thank all the staff for taking such great care of us. |We will be back!

Our stay at Hotel Saltus was amazing. One night was not enough. We chose the half board option, and both the dinner and breakfast were delicious. We arrived late and left early so we didn’t get to enjoy the rooftop pool and sauna :( The staff were friendly, especially Roberto, who was very knowledgeable about wines from the region and made us great cocktails. The new part of the hotel has incredible interior design. Also, the drive coming up here was so incredible - definitely one of the best panoramic views of the Dolomites. Highly recommend.

This hotel was an easy 10/10. We can’t wait to come back in the winter season! The restaurant was a must, they really knock it out of the park there. Locally sourced ingredients and a stellar local focus on their wine list. The entire staff on property are phenomenal, definitely made our stay feel like home away from home, even in another country. There was such a warmth about the staff here that really elevated our stay. The women at the check in were incredible and the manager from the restaurant really enhanced our experience. The hotel really gives you a zen vibe the entire time, everyone feels really at peace here. The views are spectacular and the infinity pool is really stunning. 10/10 if you’re looking to really quiet the anxiety brain of modern life and get back to a slower paced vacation. The best way to start off our week in Italy.

The new section of the hotel is truly stunning, and I must commend the architects for their exceptional design. The rooms in the new part are beautiful, and the view from the pool is breathtaking. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. However, the restaurant leaves much to be desired; the dinner was so disappointing that as I write this review, I’m reminded of the unpleasant experience. Thankfully, the breakfast was surprisingly good. It’s unfortunate that such a stylish and beautifully designed hotel (especially the new section) doesn't attract the desired clientele but rather draws a more mundane, unremarkable crowd, often with tattoos. We were particularly drawn to the refined, architectural elegance of the hotel, which was the main reason for our booking. Curiously, there are no photos of the restaurant available, likely because it detracts from the overall allure of the new section. In the end, we decided to leave a day earlier than planned and booked another hotel that matched the level of sophistication we expected. We didn't even need to request a refund for the early departure cause it was our decision to leave earlier than planned.

This is all about the spectacular scenes, great hikes and an amazing infinity pool. Definitely worth the steep drive from Bolzano. We stayed in an incredible suite (604) and were very happy to luxuriate in such surroundings, witnessing an amazing sunrise and enjoying great food and service.

My husband and I eloped in the Dolomites and stayed in a suite at the Hotel Saltus for about 4 nights. The hotel, view, and amenities were beautiful. The restaurant was delicious, convenient, and affordable. It was located in a cute and quiet town in the mountains but close to Bolzano and other attractions. Most importantly, the entire staff made the stay wonderful. They were kind, helpful, and went the extra mile to make our experience all the more special. Would absolutely go back!

Spent three great nights at Hotel Saltus as part of a yoga retreat. The hotel is pretty close to Bozen and easily reachable by car. After a warm welcome I received all necessary information and the room was shown to me. Lucky me got a Waldloggia on the fifth floor with a great view also to the mountains. The infinity pool on the roof top offers great views and the Spa area incl. sauna on the second floor cozy warmth, especially the hay one is marvellous. My booking included breakfast and dinner. Both were great, breakfast is served to the table only juices and bread / cake are from the buffet. Dinner consists of a four course menu with really great food, fine dining level. Loved my time there and coming back for sure!

I am absolutely floored by the quality of living at my time at Hotel Saltus. I came alone to focus on a creative project and the peaceful, serene space allowed for an abundance of creativity to flow. My room faced the forest and I spent a lot of time in there. The infinity pool was tranquil and overlooked the mountains. Truly breathtaking. The spa WOW. I enjoyed using the steam room every day and laying in the forest bath as I ate complimentary fruit and drank herbal tea. I'm a huge fan and I can't wait to bring my partner back. WORTH EVERY CENT and honestly I've paid way more at other hotels for much less, the hotel is an excellent DEAL!! Thank you so much. I never write reviews but this is so worth it.
