Excellent experience staying in the old castle of a small Austrian town - located on cliff above the Danube River with a wonderful view - we enjoyed sipping the local wine on the terrace and watching the boats sail down the river. Plenty of free parking and there is a local bus stop 5 mins from hotel if you want to explore the surrounding area without driving. The rooms were nicely appointed - large and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was pretty good - made to order eggs/omelets each morning. We also ate at their bistro right outside the castle walls - good as well. Service was great!

I beautiful hotel on the Danube in Duernstein Austria. A beautiful place to stay for a few nights to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. The town is very compact one street with many shops and a few restaurants. It becomes very crowded when a river cruise boat stops. The breakfast room was wonderful and the Hostess was the best! The staff was wonderful and Maria and her husband the owners of the hotel could not have been nicer. She was always at the front desk during the day to help with any problems or advise us on things to see. The elevator is a little small and difficult at times to get on during the evening just before dinner

Charming hotel in a castle. Place looks great and feels luxurious, the view on the river, nearby hills and the sunset are amazing. We usually stay in places up to 4 stars, but this place being a 5 star hotel gave us some of the little things that made the experience so much more special. First it is a real castle, rooms are decorated with antiques, the fixtures are in golden colour. It is all in good, but a little worn condition - perfect balance of having the feel of genuinely old, but very well maintained place. The staff is very nice, they all engaged in polite conversations and shown interest in our kids to make them feel a bit special. They took care about or cycles and luggage. I believe the owner was attending the reception desk when we were leaving the hotel and she was also very nice to us. We got the voucher to the nearby place for a glass of local wine or juice. The minibar in the room was free of charge. There is no alcohol, but a decent amount of snacks, mineral water and local, freshly pressed juices to enjoy. Same applies to spa - there is a fridge with soft drinks which are complimentary for the visitors. Outside swimming pool is very nice as well as spa underground (even if it is not too big and not offering 8 different types of sauna rooms like some modern places does). Other little touches were the shower gels with little prince on the tube for our kids or size and colour appropriate bath robes waiting for us in the room when we arrived. All these things we were not expecting or needing, but made our stay so much more relaxing and enjoyable. Restaurant in the hotel is very nice, food was good and the staff’s attention complemented the overall experience of the place.

Nestled along the serene banks of the iconic blue Danube River, every detail of this hotel gives charm and elegance. I was here many times, and always impressed by the warm hospitality of the staff and the exceptional culinary delights offered by the restaurant.

I felt immediately at home as soon as I checked in. My 10-night of delightful stay over Easter 2025 ended just too quickly! ||A most sophisticated destination with its superb period decor, elegance, charm, ambience, location, service, staff and most importantly, great food, especially since opportunities for dining out in that small area is very limited and April nights are too cold to go out!||The castle hotel and its imp[ressive wine cellar are owned and operated by the Thiery family and they are seen on the property each day tending to just about everything: from check-in desk to restaurant service and even including arranging the fresh hand-cut flowers adorning tables in each common area of the vast property. Their personal touch could be felt and was certainly appreciated.||The impeccably well-mannered and well-groomed staff, coming from a diverse number of countries is rare in the region. Their ability to strike up a conversation in different languages besides just German and English is refreshing and counts as an additional credit for this hotel's image. Spanish, for example, is rarely heard amongst staff of hotels in Austria, much less in tiny Duernstein.||I am a serious Foodie and without hesitation I say, indeed, meal times were always a high plus on my score sheet of experience at Hotel Schloss Duernstein. Everyday I looked forward just to waking up for my food times! With a diverse menu at both breakfast and dinner, one never gets bored. The presentation is always superb, the dining areas sophisticatedly elegant, making everyday and brand new delightful experience. My dinnertime favourite remained the extremely tasty starter: marinated asparagus tips and fried shrimps! The marinated swordfish comes very close too! The main course offers as vast and as gastronomically delightful!

The location is absolutely fantastic and the hotel is genuinely like being in a castle. But the rooms whilst elegant are very tired, spa facilities also from the 80s, the Resteraunt and Service are really very lacking-We waited 90 minutes for pasta so salty, me and my children all had to send it back. Would love to leave a positive review because the place and the staff are lovely - but I’m afraid I’m leaving a two night, very expensive stay - mostly disappointed.

Very rude front reception. Snobby. Pretty much said there’s no point in visiting the hotel unless you have a room. Personally with the experience we just had, I’d avoid spending any money here.

we are stayinf in a former casle that has been renovated and is a 5 stars hotel now. the hotel is in the middle of the pedestrian area of Durnstein and is overlooking the Danube river. the atmosphere is very unique, the staff is excellent, professional and assisting with any question or recommendation, especially Anita from the fron desk. the rooms are equiped with free drinks and free snacks, the furnitures are antique, the halls are luxurious and remind the time s of counts and dukes. there is a warm swimming pool and sauna.

Yelp
This is the place to stay when you come to Durnstein, the location is simply unbelievable, built inside an old castle and literally steps from the Monastery, you will no doubt have an amazing experience, I mean, after all you are all the way in the Wachau, one of the most beautiful regions in the world, staying in an historical hotel surrounded by amazing views, buildings ruins and history. Keep in mind that the Wachau has been designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site for its history and beauty, you will be staying in a unique place on top of a rock overlooking the Danube. This is a whole different story, remember that the Austrians invented the croissant, you MUST have a chocolate croissant here....or many, it will be one of the highlights of your trip.
