Isla Mujeres Travel Guide

"A longtime boutique property with rustic charm set on prime real estate beside the island’s main beach; suites feel comfortable and homey, making it a favored base for travelers who want to blend in with locals. Its intimate, stylish atmosphere and beachfront location make it a popular, understated alternative to larger resorts." - David Shortell David Shortell David Shortell is a journalist based in Mexico City. Really loved that hotel on the NE side of the island away from all the busy attractions. Our room faced the beach and it was incredibly peaceful. Our room was very spacious with a large patio to relax on. Very clean, with helpful and friendly staff. Hotel has a bar, but no restaurant. Also there is beach access, but you cannot swim on that side of the island. Gym is not very attractive and looks more of a dungeon without Windows. Very satisfied with our stay and wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Overall we definitely recommend the hotel, the location is perfect, close to playa Norte and all the restaurants and bars but tucked away in a quiet beautiful bay. We were searching pretty long for a hotel on Isla Mujeres and were very happy with our choice, the staff is very friendly and helpful and the view from the rooms over the pool on the sea are beautiful. Only issue we had was that the room is quite humid and so the bed was always a bit damp which is not very comfortable. Also the rooms aren’t completely soundproof so you can hear a bit of noise from other rooms.

Hotel Secreto is easily one of the loveliest hotels I’ve ever stayed in! From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed. The staff is simply wonderful; warm, kind, and incredibly helpful. We met several team members during our stay, and each one was professional, friendly, and genuinely made us feel at home. Their hospitality really set the tone for our trip! The rooms are spacious, spotless, and offer stunning sunrise views. The rooftop is a dream, with sweeping views of the island and picture-perfect sunsets. Evenings are magical, with live music creating the perfect backdrop while you enjoy their delicious food and drinks - the calamari, in particular, was incredible. The location is unbeatable!! Just a few minutes’ walk from North Beach, making it ideal for a romantic or peaceful getaway, or equally perfect for a trip with friends or family. Everything is so clean, well-maintained, and thoughtfully designed. Hotel Secreto truly lives up to its name- a hidden gem we can’t wait to return to! Thank you for the most fabulous and unforgettable trip!

Tucked away just off the main streets of downtown Isla Mujeres, Hotel Secreto is a true hidden gem. This secure, boutique hotel offers card-only access and a peaceful retreat from the island’s hustle and bustle. We stayed in a first-floor room with a private patio overlooking the pool and a partial view of the ocean. It featured a table, chairs, and a cozy lounging bed—the perfect spot to unwind. The pool was a nightly favorite for us, with just the right temperature to relax under the stars while listening to the gentle sound of ocean waves. We were even lucky enough to spot sea turtles nesting along the shore—truly unforgettable! The staff were friendly and helpful when approached, with small touches like opening the front door for us daily so we didn’t need to pull out our key card. The pool and rooftop bar attendants were also very kind and welcoming. While the hotel is quiet and restful, two small notes: the air fresheners used throughout are a bit strong, and the room could benefit from a ceiling or portable fan. That said, this hotel is an incredible value. The property is kept exclusive—only guests and rooftop bar patrons are allowed—which made it feel private and serene. We’ll absolutely be back when staying on the north end of the island. Highly recommended for couples or solo travelers seeking tranquility and charm.

The best part of this experience is the excellent service from the hotel staff who are friendly, knowledgeable, and polite. Each person is very helpful and willing to assist the guest. The hotel is overall very quiet and secluded with a very short walk to shops as well as its own small beach area. It lives up to its name of El Secreto because of the tranquil setting and quietness along with the views of the sea, the turtles that lay eggs in front of the hotel, the smiles and friendly conversation of the hotel staff, the ability to reach the town by golf cart or on foot. Albeit the hotel is on the smaller side but it is also meant to be that way with an intimate setting most of the time. The top floor is the rooftop grill and bar with the most amazing 360 degree views of the sea and island. Only thing is to go swimming in the sea is you have to walk a short ways to the east or west to find the beaches where swimming is allowed. Would love to visit again.

Our stay at Hotel Secreto was absolutely magical!!! The view from our room—overlooking the serene pool and the sparkling ocean—was both breathtaking and one-of-a-kind. Every member of the staff, from the front desk to the rooftop team to housekeeping, was warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive, making us feel right at home.||The location couldn’t be more ideal—peacefully tucked away, yet just a five-minute walk from the vibrant Main Street, the stunning Playa Norte, and only ten minutes from the ferry. It’s the perfect balance of quiet luxury and convenience.||One of the highlights was enjoying sunset on the rooftop with live music on Friday evening—it was pure bliss. I’m convinced I had the best calamari of my life up there! What made our stay even more special was discovering the deeper family connections behind the hotel. The same family runs the nearby fresh-caught seafood restaurant Blue Ballyhoo and Keen M Charters, which offers unforgettable fishing and whale shark tours. We got to experience it all, and it truly enriched our trip. We also rented bikes, paddle boards, and golf cart from Hotel Secreto which made the trip so fun!!!

We stayed at this hotel for two nights, and overall, we had a great experience. The staff were kind and helpful, the rooftop live music was a nice touch, and the cozy atmosphere made our stay even more enjoyable. We also appreciated the friendly guests and the relaxing vibe throughout the hotel. However, one thing I wouldn’t recommend is booking activities through the hotel. In terms of both price and convenience, it didn’t really work out for us. We booked a whale shark tour through the hotel and later wanted to check the photos taken during the activity. When we asked the hotel staff about them, communication with the third-party agent was quite poor (to be fair, the hotel acknowledged this and apologized). We asked about the photo pricing in advance, but they never gave us a clear answer. Later, the tour company and the agent came to the hotel, but they didn’t even show us the photos—they just Airdropped them to us and told us to pay $75. They said it was because they brought the photos to the hotel, which didn’t make much sense. We were already frustrated with the situation and told them, “We’ll just delete the photos—we don’t want them anymore.” But they said that wasn’t possible and then offered to lower the price. Honestly, it felt ridiculous. We later found out from other travelers who did the same tour that they received their photos by email and paid a different price. So, while I’d definitely recommend the hotel itself, I wouldn’t recommend booking tours through them. When we asked other guests, most said they had booked directly through tour companies, and there are many other options available nearby.

The location is excellent. An easy walk to all of Centro and Playa Norte. The pool scene is loud. Music blaring all afternoon and guests partying in the pool at 3am. one morning making it impossible to sleep and the staff/security obviously allows it. This is definitely not a tranquil property where you can relax in silence poolside or on your patio….at least not on the days we stayed there. Service is friendly, but it all feels scripted and rehearsed. The room lacks a soul. It's very stark. We expected a much different experienced considering the price and all the positive ratings. We can only assume it may just not be the hotel it once was.

Yelp
We had dinner here. The drinks were light, the food was ok. But the view... priceless! We had the prosciutto (very good), nachos (ok), and guacamole (you can't go wrong with).

Yelp
Everything about this hotel is amazing! Location- Great! Private and perfect for a nice romantic getaway. Customers service- Perfect! Family owned and they care about their customers which is exactly what you look for. Price- Honestly a steal for all of the great things this hotel has to offer. Hotel- AMAZING! Everything is clean, updated and it offers some perfect views. We loved everything about the rooms, pool and private beach. I really have zero complaints about this hotel. They are very accommodating and will help guide you through the island as well, if you have any questions on where to go or what to eat. My fiancé and I have already agreed to visit this hotel as often as we can. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
A perfect place for a hotel. It has a heated pool and their own beach which is not good for swimming. But wading is wonderful. A short walk around the corner and great snorkeling. We went off season in early September and barely anyone was there. Beautiful room with a view. The rooftop bar was the surprise. Gorgeous sunsets and reasonably priced drinks. Air conditioning and wifi. Walk to restaurants.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel. Very private like it is your own place. Owned by family so customers are treated very nice. Let's keep it secret so we can come back soon

Yelp
Booked a week to stay, there was an issue with our passports and we were not able to go. We tried to call the hotel multiple times and little did we know that they do not have anyone that answers calls... Any requests or issues have to be made through email. We tried to cancel our room and was told there was nothing they could do, they didn't even offer to move our stay to a later date. They did absolutely NOTHING to help us out or even listen to what we had to say... They made it impossible and gave no options to help out. We plan on going to Cancun as soon as we get our passport issue lined out but we will not be staying at this establishment. Please be aware before you book and make sure you send plenty of emails and leave yourself an out because of you don't you're SOL!

Yelp
This hotel is truly stunning. We stayed in Fall 2020, and even with COVID-19 restrictions in place our stay was unbelievably perfect. The pool is among the best I've ever been in, and the ocean view is world class. The owner Scott was gracious and hospitable, with lots of local knowledge and recommendations. Will definitely be back next year.

Yelp
Stayed here April 2019 and would definitely go back again. Everything about Hotel Secreto is excellent; in particular, the rooms, the pool, the beach, and the location. It is a bit secluded but not hard to get to and walkable from all of the hubbub of the north part of Isla Mujeres. The pool is quite nicely maintained, with underwater lights that change color at night, and situated in back of the hotel alongside the beach with a glass fence bordering it. The property is nicely landscaped with palm trees and there are wooden chaise loungers and a few umbrellas for guests. There are stairs leading down to the rustic and narrow beach. In contrast, the beaches on the northwest side of the island were crowd-laden and wide. You can actually walk from the beach along the northern shoreline to the other side of the island. The room has an outdoor, enclosed patio with a day bed and small table and chairs with a commanding view of the pool (from the third floor) and the beach, and there was always a breeze. Quite scenic! There is a workout room, but it was damp inside and the machines could use an update. Breakfast was brought to the room every morning including fruit, breads, juice and coffee. The hotel has a few gas-powered carts parked outside which you can rent (actually, they're more like riding mowers with canopies). The month of April is the start of the hot/humid weather, which we definitely experienced on the island, though the room was well-cooled.

Yelp
Wow! We had a truly lovely time at Hotel Secreto. Our room was spacious, impeccably clean, and comfortable with an incredible balcony and view. The pool area was wonderful as well. The best part was how friendly and helpful everyone was, especially Sebastian at the front desk. From food & activity recommendations to arranging golf carts, on-site Covid tests, airport transfer- he made everything so easy. We had such a relaxing and enjoyable time and would certainly return.

Yelp
This hotel was very lovely, very modern. The infinity pool out back overlooks a private beach. Scott, the owner, is very accommodating and kind. Helped in anyway he could by giving food and activity recommendations. The location of this hotel is only a block walk from the main strip to walk at night. Close to a plethora of restaurants, bars, and shops, but far enough to maintain the peace and tranquility at night. Thank you for a wonderful time!

Yelp
This is truly an amazing hotel! All of the staff are very kind and accommodating. The rooms are clean and house keeping does a great job maintaining them. The owner, Scott, is very polite and gracious. Rojulio and Williams went above and beyond to make our recent stay the very best. I can't wait to come back and make this a regular destination.

Yelp
Love everything about this hotel! Warm, friendly and helpful staff, peaceful, very clean and outstanding location. Pool goes out over a small private beach. If you want to get away and have an awesome time come here.

Yelp
Have been to Isla twice and stayed at 3 different hotels and shhhh, the Secret One is the best one. If you are wanting some quiet sexy hotel private time, this secluded spot on the north end of Isla Mujeres will satisfy. Very peaceful and very sexy. Voted one of the 100 Sexiest Hotels in the World and featured on Conde Nast Traveler magazine as one of the Best New Hotels in the World, you will find yourself in tight, modern quarters with only 11 other rooms, a beautiful pool aimed at the ocean, and not a whole lot to do except relax and walk into town when you need more action. We were only able to have a sort of continental breakfast with great coffee and fruit and homemade muffins in the mornings, no lunches and dinners, though. If this is still the case, ask for the special list of all restaurants that deliver, so if you get distracted with the calm of the ocean or any other beautiful thing that may keep you from venturing out into the Island of Women, you at least will not starve to death from lack of nutrition.

Yelp
Great boutique hotel in Isla Mujeres. We came for a wedding and were able to occupy most of the 12 suites with our friends. The staff is supper friendly and accommodating. They truly took care of us and tried to enhance our stay. This part of the island is a little windier, beware. Overall a great choice if you end up in Isla.
