Andermatt, Switzerland: Where to Eat, Stay, and Ski

"Staying at the Hotel Sonne felt like inhabiting a cozy, creaky, 150-year-old place where we lingered after dinner playing cards and planning the next day; its low-key, unsophisticated charm—from a quietly humming dining room full of family groups on my return to the memorable, slightly silly après-ski moments—captures the village's historic, lived-in character." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Had a wonderful experience all round. Stayed in standard room with balcony and view towards Kitzbuhel. Room was of good standard, very clean, comfortable bed, bathroom with shower over bath rather than separate shower, small kitchen type table with chairs, sofa and flat screen TV. Fridge also included. Breakfast was extensive and evening meals were all beautiful presented and tasted really good. Reception and restaurant staff were friendly, courteous and helpful at all times. Spa area was extensive with long open hours. Plenty of towels and spotless. I used swimming pool and fitness rooms each morning and again were all top quality. The situation is beautiful with many nice walks in close proximity and a small peaceful town . Would highly recommend and could find very view faults.

Loved the pool, & Sauna. Transportation for skiing was super convenient along with pickup/drop off to train station. We used the ski path to the hotel two days instead of taking the shuttle. Quick walk to town and many restaurants/bar. Considering brining a group of people from the USA next winter .

**5-Star Review for Hotel Sonne Kirchberg, Austria** If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would—Hotel Sonne Kirchberg truly deserves an 11 out of 5! From the moment you step through the door until the time you check out, the customer service is simply exceptional. Special shoutout to the incredible waiter and bartending staff—David, Gabor, and Stif—who go above and beyond to make every guest feel welcome and cared for. Their professionalism, warmth, and charm are the cherry on top of this fantastic experience. The hotel itself is a gem. The sauna and spa facilities are genuinely 5-star, offering the perfect way to relax after a day of adventure. And the value here is outstanding—it's incredibly affordable, especially considering the all-inclusive dining package. The breakfast, afternoon snack, and dinner are absolutely phenomenal. English-speaking tourists, take note: Hotel Sonne Kirchberg is a perfect choice if you're worried about navigating Austria. The staff is accommodating, the rooms are modern and comfortable, and the views from the hotel are breathtaking. The proximity to the Kitzbühel ski slopes is ideal, with shuttle services provided to make it even more convenient. This hotel is equally perfect for summer vacations, with countless outdoor adventures waiting just outside your door. The charming Austrian towns nearby are a joy to explore, and with less than a two-hour drive from Munich—or an easy train ride—you couldn’t ask for a better location. If you’re looking for a worry-free, unforgettable vacation experience, Hotel Sonne Kirchberg is your destination. I can't recommend it highly enough! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟+ ~Johnny and the Family

We recently stayed at hotel Sonne, and while there's much to praise, there are some aspects that need attention, especially for skiing families. First, the positives: The hotel itself is visually stunning, set in a great location that enhances its charm. Our room was clean and well-maintained, though the bathroom felt a bit dated. Nonetheless, everything was functional and fine. The spa area was a highlight, offering a serene and beautiful space to relax. Additionally, the food was top-notch, with a variety of delicious options that catered well to our family's tastes. However, as a family of skiers with two children, we faced a significant inconvenience. There was no heater unit or heated ladder in the bathroom to dry our ski clothing. This was quite surprising and a bit frustrating, given the hotel's location in a ski region. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather during our stay, but had it snowed or rained, it would have been quite challenging to manage wet ski gear. When I inquired at the reception about a possible oversight on our part, they informed me that the only heating available was underfloor heating, with the only slightly warm area being a small section in the bathroom. This arrangement is far from ideal for drying ski equipment and clothing. It's worth noting that I saw photos of other rooms with heating units next to the windows, but our standard family room lacked this feature. In conclusion, while the hotel is undoubtedly beautiful and offers many commendable amenities, it might not be the best choice for skiing families due to the lack of adequate facilities to dry ski gear. I hope the hotel considers adding such amenities in the future to cater to the needs of all their guests.

We had 5 nights and the hotel really excelled in some areas: the spa is incredible, they picked us up for free from the train station (paying an external taxi company when their own transport was busy), free shuttle to the ski lift every day, staff great (especially waiting staff and bus drivers), plus great breakfast. Things could be improved; rooms are a little old fashioned and half-renovated in some cases (bathrooms not great) and maybe the evening meals are a bit over-thought, with simplicity might be better. Overall, we had a very enjoyable time here.

We first stayed in the Sonne over 10 years ago. Much has improved, most notably the food and the sauna area. ||We stayed for a week, essentially full board in a junior suite with ski passes, all in for about euro 2500.||The food was excellent, dinner every night was superb, including Guinea fowl, Duck & traditional Austrian courses. Pud every nigh was well presented and delicious. ||The wine was pricey, as you might expect.||The service from hosts Mark & Henne was friendly, polite, efficient and really added to the relaxing experience.||||A hotel ski shuttle runs each morning and afternoon from 15.15 - 16.00, it would help if it continued to 16.30 as it is only right to visit a mountain bar or two on the last run!. ||The snow this year was really poor, but we can't hold the hotel responsible for that!||||The sauna was well designed and had everything you would hope for, but please enforce the 'no mobile phones' even in the chill out areas, I saw a woman filming here and this is unacceptable in a sauna area and the ban should be enforced.

Visited for a week as part of a Titan Xmas Tyrol Tour. Really pleased at the quality and service in the hotel. Upgraded to a Superior Bedroom which appeared recently refurbished to a very high standard but still contained plenty of pine wood and had great views across the snowy mountains. Only downside was no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. We were on Half Board and had an excellent choice at breakfast - eggs cooked to order, usual bacon, sausages, mushrooms etc and a wide selection of cold meats, cheeses, yoghurts, fresh fruit, etc. Went for the machine Cappuccino rather than the Americano jug on the table, and wide range of high quality teas also available. Evening meal consisted of a starter, then a very tasty soup, a main course which had to be selected from a choice of 3/4 dishes in the morning, and then a desert and tea/coffee - all food was cooked to a very high standard, good sized portions, and a good variety. Only criticism from a personal viewpoint was that some dishes seemed to contain a lot of salt - in particular the scrambled egg! Service levels good although sometimes people not ordering in the morning created anxiety amongst the staff at dinner time. Hotel facilities looked good but we didn’t have time to try out the pool/sauna. And there was only a limited amount of seating area around the bar and no lounge area which would have been helpful given the number of residents (our tour was 34 and there were two other sizeable tours). Easy walk from hotel to the centre of Kirchberg, and shuttle transport to the slopes for the skiers. Overall a highly recommended hotel.
