This was the most miserable hotel stay I've ever had. I've been to hundreds of hotels all over the world, and I don't mean it figuratively when I say it was MISERABLE.
To echo another reviewer's sentiment, the room was HOT. It might be ok for some folks to have a room that's 78 degrees, but no way in hell you can sleep in that heat unless you want to wake up at 2 a.m. to damp sheets from sweat. At first, the front desk told us they'd have maintenance come up and take a look at things. 5 hours later, when maintenance finally came, they decided the a/c was broken and to put us in another room. Surprise--the new room also had broken a/c and it was the same situation. This hotel clearly banks on the fact that San Francisco stays mostly cool throughout the year, but we happened to be there on a week where temps got to 90 degrees outside.
We had two choices: sleep in the 78-80 degree room, with the curtains drawn to have darkness, or sleep with the windows wide open and our FRONT DOOR CRACKED OPEN with the trash can to let air flow through, but deal with the city lights, city noises (it is loud in the Tenderloin) and sunrise at like 6 a.m. We decided to go with the latter. Sure, having the front door open risked a bit of our own security, but the street noises woke us up every hour, anyway, and it was better than sweating throughout the night.
Lastly, the hotel charged us a $34 "mandatory fee" for hotel amenities like water, coffee and tea, having access to the gym, etc. None of which we used, of course, as there's plenty of coffee and tea nearby and we never planned to use the hotel gym. This is akin to a hotel charging everyone a fee for the shitty continental breakfast that most places serve for free.
Avoid this place. We might as well have been sleeping on the dirty grass at the steps in Union Square.
