Oh how much I wanted to love this place! Service was exceptional, breakfast was great, location is right in the old town and it is just what we like-- a small boutique hotel in a historic building. However, it is also one of the most uncomfortable hotels I've ever stayed in. First of all, there are a lot of stairs and no elevator, far more than I could have imagined for such a small building. Our room, which was described as the best room and the only one with an ocean view balcony, was up four flights of steep, winding, narrow stairs with an irregular rise. The balcony, unbeknownst to us when booking, is not accessible from the room, but you need to go up yet another steep narrow set of irregularly spaced stairs into a narrow opening to get to a tiny (barely fit two people) balcony with a great view. We loved it the first night, but I should have been suspicious when they made us sign a liability waiver related to the balcony. On our first night, I had to twist and turn to get back down the balcony stairs and the drop to the first step was steep. Unfortunately I twisted my knee which put a damper on the rest of the trip. If these stairs were not enough, to get to the breakfast room is yet another set of steep (stone this time) stairs into what was probably a former cellar. If you are driving their private parking is a 15 minute walk, which you just don't feel like if it is raining or you've had a long day. The room itself was attractive but uncomfortable. The bed was a platform bed with the hardest mattress I've ever slept on, like a futon mattress but with absolutely no give at all. I literally could not sleep. On top of that it was bulged in the middle so that I was afraid if I tossed and turned I'd fall off the bed in the middle of the night-- if you put an object on the bed it would roll right off. We asked them if they had a mattress topper but they said they didn't and had no solution. Housekeeping did, I believe, turn the mattress over because the next day the bulge was gone and it was flat, but still hard as a rock and I woke up feeling bruised all over. In retrospect I should have asked for extra comforters to sleep on. The chairs in the room by the window overlooking the ocean looked nice but were also so uncomfortable that you couldn't sit in them for long. Unfortunately a classic case of form over function. This is not the place for anyone with even minor mobility or back issues.
