We chose Hotel Splendide for Christmas Eve, booking our room and dinner weeks in advance. While the hotel has some undeniable charms, our overall experience did not live up to the "Leading Hotels of the World" reputation.
The Highlights: The hotel is a well-maintained, grand historic building. We were particularly impressed by the stunning lobby and the very elegant bar area, both of which have a wonderful atmosphere. Additionally, the view of the lake is absolutely beautiful.
The room was clean and the bed was large and comfortable. However, the interior feels quite dated, especially the thick old-fashioned carpets. More importantly, the balcony door did not close properly, which meant the street noise was quite loud.
The dining experience was a major disappointment, especially given the CHF 160 price tag for four courses. Instead of the beautiful main hall, we were seated in a side room next to the children’s tables. The food quality was poor: the tuna appetizer was partially grey and seemingly thawed too quickly, while the main course of slow-cooked meat was served without any sauce and accompanied only by some mushrooms and two raw leaves of kale. To finish, the dessert was an industrial-looking tartlet with an overly sweet foam, making the entire meal feel uninspired and overpriced.
The additional charges felt excessive—CHF 35 for outdoor parking plus CHF 46 for electric charging. Furthermore, when it was time to leave, there was not enough staff available to help with our bags, so we had to carry our own luggage to the car.
We expected higher quality from a Swiss Grand Hotel.
