Splendide Royal Lugano (Lugano, Switzerland) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"On the shores of Lake Lugano is the Hotel Splendide Royal, a proper old-world classic that’s been updated just enough to preserve its retro charm. What’s been changed is mostly subtle — the rooms and suites, still antique in style, are full of modern luxury-hotel comforts, and the restaurants, with their astonishing views of the lake, are still the very picture of upright high-end elegance. It’s in the modernist spa where the 21st century is allowed the greatest influence — and, as you can expect from a Swiss luxury hotel, the offerings border on the extravagant." - Tablet Hotels

We chose Hotel Splendide for Christmas Eve, booking our room and dinner weeks in advance. While the hotel has some undeniable charms, our overall experience did not live up to the "Leading Hotels of the World" reputation. The Highlights: The hotel is a well-maintained, grand historic building. We were particularly impressed by the stunning lobby and the very elegant bar area, both of which have a wonderful atmosphere. Additionally, the view of the lake is absolutely beautiful. The room was clean and the bed was large and comfortable. However, the interior feels quite dated, especially the thick old-fashioned carpets. More importantly, the balcony door did not close properly, which meant the street noise was quite loud. The dining experience was a major disappointment, especially given the CHF 160 price tag for four courses. Instead of the beautiful main hall, we were seated in a side room next to the children’s tables. The food quality was poor: the tuna appetizer was partially grey and seemingly thawed too quickly, while the main course of slow-cooked meat was served without any sauce and accompanied only by some mushrooms and two raw leaves of kale. To finish, the dessert was an industrial-looking tartlet with an overly sweet foam, making the entire meal feel uninspired and overpriced. The additional charges felt excessive—CHF 35 for outdoor parking plus CHF 46 for electric charging. Furthermore, when it was time to leave, there was not enough staff available to help with our bags, so we had to carry our own luggage to the car. We expected higher quality from a Swiss Grand Hotel.

We had such a lovely stay! The location is gorgeous, and easily walkable to many attractions in Lugano (although a bit farther from the main station). Everything about the stay was lovely, the rooms are comfortable and very clean and the staff was very friendly. The breakfast was delicious with many hot options, continental buffet and great coffee and we had a lovely dinner in the restaurant as well. We really enjoyed the spa relaxation room, sauna, and amazing view from the pool to relax in the winter!

We stayed for a few days. We had a room with a lakeside view, it was a memorable experience overall. The room was comfortable, however the hotel is old and its HVAC is a "community" system that once changed to heat for the upcoming fall season, cannot be changed back in the event of a warm weather outbreak as we experienced, So, we lived, as did all other guests with windows open 24/7 for the extent of our stay. ||The hotel staff were extremely helpful and service oriented. The place had the feel of an old-time opulent hotel from a bygone era. The hotel has a Michelin one star restaurant on the premises. We ate dinner at the restaurant and it did not disappoint, it was a memorable meal.||The hotel is located a short walk from a Lake Lugano ferry pier which enabled us to easily travel to various places located at other points on the large and very picturesque lake. ||Hopefully we will return someday.

My wife and I were lucky enough to stay at the Hotel Splendide Royal Lugano as part of our honeymoon trip to Italy and Switzerland (24-27 Oct 2025). From the beginning, the staff were exceptionally warm and friendly. Couldn't have asked for better service from everyone we interacted with; from the front desk, the masseuses, the waitstaff and chef at I Due Sud, and the concierge among others. The room we had was absolutely fantastic overlooking the lake, and easily the nicest we've ever stayed in. Felt spoiled to stay even a few days in such luxury. They provided a bottle of champagne and a delicious tart upon arrival to welcome us for the honeymoon, which was such a classy touch and deeply appreciated. We booked our first-ever Michelin dinner at I Due Sud, and it was phenomenal. The food was stunningly delicious, the service was top-notch, and the head chef Marco came out to personally congratulate us on our honeymoon, including providing us several courses above and beyond our initial selections (even a happy honeymoon dessert!). All we could've asked for and more, I guarantee you will not leave hungry! I hope we're one day lucky enough to return to Lugano. Until then, our warmest thanks and deepest appreciation to everyone at the Hotel Splendide Royal. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making our honeymoon such an unforgettable experience!

We booked a two-night stay at Hotel Splendide, which promotes itself as a "luxury" hotel. We have stayed at the hotel before, and our experience previously was wonderful. Hence, we decided to return. ||When we arrived in our room, we went to open the curtain and found that the view from the room was almost completely obstructed by a large object outside of the window – a wall of some sort. As a result, the room was dark and, frankly, depressing. |One of us went to the reception and indicated the room was unacceptable for this reason and that we would like to change to another room in this same category. The response was that there were no other rooms in this category and that we would have to pay for a better room if we wanted to see out the window. Rather than opting to stay in this dark room, we opted to pay an additional 150 CHF per night for a room with a view. Keep in mind, this was in addition to the 250 CHF rate we were already paying per night for the original room.||We do not believe a luxury hotel should offer any rooms with a completely obstructed view. This is an unacceptable option for any room on offer in such a hotel. We could not help notice that a manager had overheard our discussion with the reception, and seemed to make every effort to avoid intervening. Another rather troubling issue for any hotel, much less a luxury one.

From the moment we arrived, we felt truly welcomed. The staff are incredibly kind and attentive — always smiling and ready to help with anything we needed.||The hotel is simply beautiful, full of charm and elegance, with a stunning view of Lake Lugano that you never get tired of looking at. Our room was spacious, spotless, and very comfortable.||Breakfast was one of the highlights — delicious food, great coffee, and that amazing lake view made every morning special.||Everything about our stay was perfect. You can really feel the passion and attention to detail in every corner of the hotel. We can’t wait to come back!

Title: A Wonderful Stay – Exceeded All Expectations! We recently stayed at this hotel and had an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. From the moment we arrived, the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The check-in process was smooth and efficient, and we were immediately impressed by the cleanliness and style of the property. Our room was spotless, spacious, and very comfortable. The bed was perfect for a good night’s sleep, and we loved the modern amenities provided. Housekeeping did an excellent job each day, and we really appreciated the little touches that made our stay special. Especially thank you Miriam and Alfredo for assisting us. This awesome concierge Richardo for giving us well detailed information and for making our last minute booking possible. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a comfortable and welcoming place to stay. Thank you to the entire team for making our trip so enjoyable!

Our stay at Splendid Hotel Lugano was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we were beyond impressed by the exceptional level of service and care provided by the entire team. The hotel’s location couldn’t be more ideal—nestled by the lake and within easy walking distance to the heart of Lugano, it offered both tranquility and convenience. What truly set this experience apart were the personal touches that made us feel not just welcome, but genuinely valued as guests. Every detail, from the beautifully appointed room to the thoughtful gestures throughout our stay, reflected a level of hospitality that is rare to find. A heartfelt thank you goes to Ilaria and Alfredo, who went above and beyond to make our stay extra special. Their warmth, attentiveness, and professionalism left a lasting impression and made us feel right at home. Splendid Hotel Lugano lives up to its name in every way. We look forward to returning and highly recommend it to anyone visiting this beautiful region of Switzerland.

Yelp
Stayed here for 2 nights in May as part of a group tour. Our room was very big and facing the lake with a small balcony. I was very happy with the room and wish we had more time to spend there. There were some chocolates and jellies waiting for us in the room when we checked in which were delightful! The location of the hotel is very conveniently located with a quick walk to the downtown Lugano area with lots of shops and restaurants. We had breakfast included which was buffet style. The first morning we got there early and had a spot outside to enjoy the view. The breakfast itself was just okay. The second day our group was leaving early so they had arranged for an earlier opening for breakfast but when we got there they were still setting up and did not have all the options available. All said, I would consider staying there again if ever back in the area. I understand there are two parts of the hotel and have heard negative things about the other part so would want to make sure I was in a similar lake facing room in the main hotel building.

Yelp
A pretty nice hotel! Great location right on the water, close to shopping, biking, restaurants and a bit of anything else you may need. The staff we encountered during our couple night stay here was super friendly and generally spoke pretty good English for us Americans :) Our room was ready around 1230 when we arrived, which was a surprisingly nice thing. We did end up on the 'left side' of the hotel and the high floor with a room that seemed a bit older than others in our group reported to have. But it was nicely equipped, the AC worked and just across the hallway was a huge balcony with an amazing view! Wife spent some time at the spa and really enjoyed it and the access to the pool area and such the rest of the time there. It is priced as I'd expect for the area. overall a great experience and would definitely booked it again if I was back in the area.

Yelp
There's a restaurant on the ground floor open to the public, it's called La Veranda. Excellent service, selection of wine and many dish options. The Gnochetti with lobster, buttata and truffle were fantastic!

Rita P.

Yelp
Very disappointing - the staff were not friendly when we arrived- the restaurant was very expensive for mediocre food and the cocktails had hardly enough alcohol for a sip. At 20.00 for a drink and needing to order a double and it still not half way up the glass (and that's with ice.). The food was delivered cold. My advice, Stay somewhere where you get both service and are appreciated.

Yelp
One of, if not the best, hotels in Lugano. A terrific view of Lake Lugano, and right on the boardwalk. Definitely recommend, and definitely come back. The service is excellent (at least 9/10). Restaurant is probably an 8/10. The rooms are clean, nicely decorated (silk drape for wallpaper), and very comfortable. Obviously you should expect to pay more, but for those familiar with similar hotels in Europe, nothing shocking.

Yelp
This was the most random and elaborate hotel experience of my life. All you need to know is in its name. After a visit to Florence and Pisa, we decided to trek up to Milan for a night. After a day of shopping and cathedral viewing, I said, "Let's just go to Lugano" -- the place where I had studied abroad in college. With no reservations, we drove in and were immediately greeted by the valet, who parked the smart car. (SIGH. I miss smart cars.) We walked in and asked if any rooms were available. We were then shown a couple of options and chose our room. This was one of the most comfortable hotel experiences of my life, but it's costly. It's definitely one of the most expensive hotels in Lugano. But hey, you're in Switzerland! Do it up. (I don't usually use that phrase, but it works best here.)

Yelp
Impeccable service! When in Lugano I suggest staying here. Why leave when the food is perfect and the hotel service is great. The staff is extremely helpful and is always attentive. I feel like they are family and look forward to going back in March. If you are visiting Lugano for work or for play, I suggest ordering in and taking the day off. Have the staff caterer to your every needs.

Yelp
We are on a Tauck tour and dinner was included on the first night in the La Veranda restaurant in the Hotel Splendide Royal The room is excellent Went for dinner and were disappointed Loud piano playing and we felt very rushed Lots of service people serving very fast My wife had squash blossoms filled with some kind of breading and cheese mush I had French onion soup that was bland and not what I was expecting My wife had veal Osso Bucco and I had a sliced steak dish We both tried each other's dishes and didn't like either one Very disappointing and would not recommend dining here

Yelp
Our favorite Lugano hotel - and we have stayed in 4-5 others (daughter in school in Lugano), including other luxury hotels, downtown and in the suburbs. Hotel Splendide is convenient to Lake Lugano, galleries and shopping, and has the best service we have experienced in Switzerland. The staff is friendly and eager to assist - we use the concierge for day trip planning, airport pick ups, school drop offs! The hotel combines old-world luxury and impeccable service. A birthday surprise of complimentary champagne and cake was waiting for me in my room one evening. Can't say enough about our good experiences at this hotel. We are returning to Lugano in December and will stay there.

Yelp
This hotel is simply amazing! The staff is helpful and polite, the food is wonderful and the rooms are stunning. Of corse the prices are a litter higher, but it is worth it. Also, the location could not be better; just a beautiful stroll along the lake to get to the shops. Me and my family love it here and will defiantly be making a reservation to stay at the Hotel Slepndide Royal next time we are back in Lugano!
