Yelp
In general, it's a nice, comfortable hotel with a very convenient locale. Some booking sites give the Swissôtel chain a 4Star hotel rating, BUT we found it closer to be a 3.5.
My wife and I looked for a 4 star hotel online and selected this one. We had a pretty nice 6-night stay here; BUT our overall EXPERIENCE was a 3.0.
We did take advantage of its convenient location to visit Chinatown, Esplanada, Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay, several museums, the Chijmes... Oh yes, the famed LONG BAR is only a few min WALK away.
DETAILS
THE GOOD:
- My wife and I had a large std room with a balcony on the 28fl facing the Carlton Hotel Tower, with a view of the open air swimming pool and tennis courts on the 8th fl. Our room had 2 queen beds; a desk; a safe in closet; a good sized, modern bathroom with a tub, but without a separate shower stall; free wifi (worth $28/day, after signing up the free Swissotel Membership); free in-room coffee and tea.
- The front staff was friendly, patient and helpful for check-in/out. The house keeping was very efficient, and had no problem delivering extra bath towels upon request. Valets were very helpful and pleasant with luggages and getting taxis.
We enjoyed the view of the pools drom the balcony, and were very happy with its convenient location to MTR, shopping, restaurants and other attractions, such as The Raffles, National Museum, Esplanada, Marina Bay.
THE NOT SO GOOD
1. The shower/tub is poorly designed, leaking water during & after shower.
2. There was a persistent, unpleasant odor in the bathroom. We traced its source to the OUTSIDE, BOTTOM part of the toilet bowl, which collected dirt! The poor design of the bowl probably made it difficult to clean the hidden outside bottom part, causing the odor!
3. Bath towels are thin, the type commonly found in LOW-END hotels.
4. The carpet in our room is buckled. I tripped over it, though did not fall.
5. The HALLWAY has a LOW-END feel. It lacks class and upkeep. The wall paper is peeling; bottom of the wall in the hallway badly scratched.
6. The hotel lacks the presence of security staff in the lobby elevator area. Elevators do not require a keycard to get to any floor. Although the double-door to the elevator hall requires a keycard at night, anyone can (and do) just follow someboby through before the doors close!
7. The lobby, although spacious, does NOT give the feel of a high-end hotel, as compared to Carlton (4Star) or other 4+Star hotels such as Ritz-Carlton, InterContinental. (By the way, in all those hotels, there's always the presence of a staff member in the entrance hallway to guest elevators, which require a keycard to operate.)
8. The check-in/check-out lines seemed to be ALWAYS LONG.
We did not use the fitness center, nor the famed helipad lounge/restaurant on the top. We heard the tower section facing the Bay was spectacular. All those could, perhaps, have earned an extra half star to the rating?
