Hotel The Exchange

"How did it strike you on arrival? The lobby looks like any unassuming storefront on the main thoroughfare of Damrak near the train station. It disguises the collection of kooky rooms that lie beyond reception. What this hotel lacks in amenities it makes up for in over-the-top design. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Art and fashion students and/or enthusiasts. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. Each of the 61 rooms is individually decorated by a student at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, so design varies widely. Cream-colored wallpaper displaying illustrations of handbags is the backdrop for actual handbags in one purse-themed room, while the black wire for exposed-bulb light fixtures snakes around the bright white walls of another room. They also are categorized by stars, ranking from one to five, depending on the size of the room, the amenities, and the view. Room service and food: Worth it?Cafe Stock operates next door and serves up the basics, like coffee ($3.50), Nutella and banana pancakes ($8), and a ham and cheese panini ($7). Bottom line: worth it, and why? This no-frills hotel offers great value in the form of central location and one-of-a-kind design. From the hotel, you can easily slip out onto a side street or one of the tiny cobblestoned alleys that crisscross the city like a spider web. For convenience and location—just off Dam Square, right in the city center—it’s hard to beat." - Meredith Bethune

Centrally located and clean place to stay. They have air conditioning, which was very helpful during a heat wave, and twin beds available. There is an elevator which is great since the stairs are a bit narrow like most buildings in the city. The only downside was that the toilet room was very small. I'm not very tall or long legged, and I could not really keep my legs in the room easily since it was so small. But we made the best of it, and the price and location can't be beaten!

Do not recommend this hotel. The staff of the hotel is extremely friendly, the hotel is located five minutes from the train station and is in an incredibly central location of Amsterdam. The price / quality ratio of the room however are incredibly disappointing: the "comfort" rooms have barely any space to move in and still have a high price tag. The bed usually takes 80% of the space, with a very small desk and safe (in which the hair dryer is placed because there is very little space in the bathroom). There is no coffee/tea kettle. The rooms are supposed to be decorated according to high & original fashion, however the decor was also underwhelming. The bathroom itself is fine, however the shower is not partitioned by anything but a shower curtain - there isn't an actual shower stall or even a glass partition. Aside from the great location, I feel this is an overly priced hotel and definitely not recommend it.

Google
staff were nice and friendly but the room was absolutely filthy and TINY, genuinely didn’t have enough room to put my bag down. the room was so dark and we couldn’t even find a power outlet as there was fabric all over the wall and ceiling which didn’t seem hygienic at all. it smelled awfully strong of air freshener as if it was trying to mask something; i’m asthmatic so that was an instant trigger. there were bugs all over the bathroom. i had to immediately book somewhere else as i was so upset. avoiddd

You really can’t find a better spot to stay in Amsterdam. You can walk to Amsterdam Centraal in 7 mins (which if you’re taking the euro rail is very nice), Anne frank house in 15 minutes, and the red light district is about 10 mins away. It was the perfect location. The staff was incredible, always asking if we needed anything or if we needed suggestions. I will say the rooms are a bit of a wild card. We booked two rooms for our stay. One room was an 80’s room with a black and white fabric draped over the ceiling, personally I felt quite claustrophobic in that room. Unfortunately, they were full and we couldn’t switch. Our friend stayed in that room. The other room was the deluxe suite. It was just plain white but I loved it. Pretty view of the city, the rooms were clean. I would definitely recommend this location if you want to see the sights in Amsterdam. Note: there is an elevator although some rooms for example 600-700 level may require use of steep stairs.

Google
We loved our stay here! The rooms are so stylish, such a convenient location to Amsterdam Centraale Station & right in the heart of downtown Amsterdam. Beautiful hotel and we got to enjoy the balcony with views of the sunrise and sunset! The vibes are amazing, and the check in staff are very sweet.

Loved my time at Hotel The Exchange! The fashion-themed rooms are creative and full of character. Perfect location near Central Station, friendly staff, and very clean. A great blend of comfort and design — highly recommend!

Google
I stayed there for 3 nights and had a great experience. The bed was very comfortable, and the room was spacious. The front desk staff was friendly and accommodating. Additionally, the hotel is within walking distance of many popular tourist attractions. Hope to return soon!

Yelp
Pros-extremely close to everything you could want! Hotel is VERY clean! Great, friendly staff. Rooms are extremely unique. They have DYSON cooling fans-whoa! Cons-rooms are very small. No a/c. Small bathrooms with no tub-difficult to not have water everywhere on floor. For price this is a great value with the hotel and area! Definitely would return here!

Yelp
This is an honest review, not a bad one. 1. The hotel is central- very central. You're in between a NY Pizza and souvenir store. To the hotels defense: I should have researched the google street view prior to booking. 2. We were originally booked in the Marie Antoinette room. It was nicely decorated but lacked an air-conditioning unit. a. To the hotels defense: some of the room have a portable dyson looking fan/electric fan. The front desk (or lack thereof) was very accommodating and "exchanged" us to a standard room with a centralized a/c unit. Location: Close proximity to all the sites, canals and Centraal Station within 5 minutes walking distance. There is a tram stop directly outside the hotel and Ubers can pick up/ drop off as well. However, picture this hotel in Time Square between Madam Tussauds and the Olive Garden- in my opinion, that too many tourist for a small area. The Staff: there is no lobby or waiting area. The check in is through a narrow hallway and a person manning what to me seemed to be a poorly constructed booth. However, the staff were very helpful in accommodating our request for a room change and tried their very best to make us feel welcome. Bottom Line: This hotel is not for everyone. My girlfriend and I loved Amsterdam but would have enjoyed the city more if it were not for the location- this could have been avoided should I have done more research.

Yelp
We extensively researched hotels in Amsterdam within our price range before we booked so we had some idea of what to expect when we arrived........ The location on Damrak is great, but we didn't take take note of exactly where on the street the hotel was, so we walked past the entrance 3 times before realising, as the signage outside is not good. This was not helped by the extremely large group of tourists standing in front of the, very small, open doorway. The lift was all glass and difficult to use, but at least there was one. The room was very clean and comfortable, though small and very strangely decorated, however we knew we had booked a moderately priced hotel and we spend very little time in hotel rooms whilst on holiday anyway. There was no wardrobe in the room, only a clothes rail, though the bathroom was perfectly functional. It was very noisy but I don't think this was particularly a reflection on, or criticism of the Exchange as we were on Damrak, probably one of the busiest streets ever! A big positive was being only 5 minutes from the Central Station, as this is a great reference point for getting around the City without getting lost.

Yelp
The room is fine. Staff is helpful and cool. The General Manager is rude. I picked this hotel over 5 others and now I wish I hadn't.

Yelp
I stayed here for Queen's night and Queen's Day Amsterdam 2012. What an unbelievable party. Akin to Mardi Gras in the States. Anyway, about the hotel: The non-smoking room I booked smelled of smoke, a non-starter for me. The receptionist told me that housekeeping took are of it with a spray and that it was impossible to move me, no manager to talk to, no refund possible yadda yadda I'm sure you have all dealt with poor customer service. Anyway, a man came to take the night shift and BAM he moved me to a new room (not as nice but at this point I didn't care) and was very accomadating. He (and the great location) is the only reason the review is 2 stars and not 1. Other: 0) Queensnight and Queensday total price for 2 nights: $572 USD. 1) The hotel was decorated by some local artists or something, so there is some weirdness/coolness going on if you like that sort of thing. I attached some pics. 2) The rooms face the DamRak street, so you hear ambulances etc. 3) The bathroom had a bad drainage smell that came up every so often. Not like sewage, but extremely unpleasant. 4) The "king bed" is two twins pushed together without any kind of device to hold them together, so you immediately slip down and the two beds push apart. So you have to pick which twin bed you want to sleep on. 5) The shower has no curtain is just sort of sprays into the very small bathroom.

Yelp
European hotels can be quite pricy and hostels lack privacy. Exactly in the middle is The Exchange! There isn't much to it (at least not in the 1 star rooms), but it's under €100 nightly. My room was quite quaint with white walls, white linens and white furniture. Small, but actually larger than I had anticipated. Who spends all their time in the room anyways? Get out there and explore. The bed was amazingly comfortable and that alone makes The Exchange worth it for me. The bathroom is spacious and fully stocked with everything you need. They'll even provide a hair dryer if you ask. Paid tv is available, but again, get out of the room! One of the best amenities is the free wifi! Thank goodness! I turned off my data before traveling; so, each morning I google mapped my route and snapped screenshots to get around. Plus, I was able to check in with family and friends back home without incurring huge international charges. Another plus, The Exchange is 5 minutes from Centraal Station. It's definitely in a touristy area, but it makes orienting yourself so much easier. Within 1 day, I was able to move around in the city and still find my way back to the hotel easily. The only big negative I have is that you can hear everything: the street, the people above, below and next to you, the vending machine and the staff at Stock prepping. Make sure you bring earplugs. The Stock, next door, is a bit pricey but really convenient. Despite the extra euro it cost, I've popped in every morning for a cheese sandwich. They're open as early as 7 am which is great, because even though Holland doesn't get moving till around 10am, I'm stuck on America time. All in all, pleasant stay. It isn't fancy, but it's clean, convenient and inexpensive.

Yelp
Loved this place. Stayed one night on a layover in Amsterdam. Easy to get to, clean, chic. Loved that the decor in each room is uniquely designed by a different art student! And the BED WAS AMAZING! so comfortable, had the best sleep. Rooms are on the small size but only because the king size took up the place. Seriously considering canceling my reservation for later this week at a different hotel and losing my payment to stay here again. Loved it.

Yelp
Unique and interesting hotel! Decorated super uniquely each room is an art piece! Very fun concept! It is really clean. Bed is super comfortable. Had a lovely towel warmer and adjustable removable handheld shower head. Staff is friendly and helpful. Really conveniently located a block and a half away from Amsterdam Central Station. It is on the main road but the rooms are super sound proof - never heard the main road expect for faint sound of emergency vehicles and the bell tower in the morning. Not too much to the rooms but a big step up from hostels and much better than a sterile feeling hotel with trashy/cheesy/bland colors and decor.

Yelp
good location, right on the damrak street. but it has the smallest door, so easy to miss it when passing by. our room was just as big as the bed and maybe one more chair. i read each room is unique in terms of decorations but our room had... none. it was white walls, white sheets, white chair, white lamp, with no shapes or anything.. not as artsy as i would expect. i liked the bathroom very much. coming from a crowded city myself, i wish toronto condos can adopt the bathroom styles where a shower head is shared in the room with the toilet and sink. over all it made me a bit claustrophobic and expensive.

Yelp
This hotel is really hip. It is decorated in a really interesting way. It is really clean. The bed was comfortable. The room was tiny though, it only had the bed, a television, a table, and a (really uncomfortable) chair. It also had a safe. The bathroom was pretty strange. Just a shower head next to the toilet, no enclosure around it. It just kind of flooded the bathroom for a bit too, the only remedy was the squeegee supplied.

Yelp
It was fun. The elevator was impossible to figure out. the layout is odd. The decor is cute. more kitschy than "avant-garde" as it is billed. My main issue with the place was how hot my room was and the fact that the window only opened a sliver. i am sure it had to do with the no-smoking policy but come on. it was august and it was warm outside. The fan that was provided helped a bit but was VERY loud. I will say i left Amsterdam quite clean as I took like four cold showers in one day. I did love the bathroom. Also the vending machines had really good cheap beer/wine. I wish we had things like that in the US.
