We stayed at Tjampuhan Spa at the beginning of October for 10 nights. This review is a little late, but I still wanted to share our experience because overall, we genuinely enjoyed our stay — with one important issue that should be addressed.
On our first night, we were placed in a room that was extremely moldy. While Bali is naturally very humid (which we completely understand), the level of mold in this room was far beyond acceptable. The smell was overwhelming, the air felt heavy, and breathing was genuinely difficult. We barely managed four hours of sleep. First thing in the morning, we asked for a room change, and thankfully the staff responded quickly and moved us without hesitation.
It’s important to say — kindly but honestly — that rooms with such severe mold should not be offered to guests at all. High mold levels can cause respiratory irritation, headaches, allergies, asthma flare-ups, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. In a humid environment, mold spreads rapidly, making the health risks even more significant. These shaded rooms clearly need proper treatment and refurbishment, and I truly hope management takes this seriously.
Our second room was much better, and we were genuinely happy with it. However, even then, the bathroom cleanliness could be improved. Small details like the bathroom window drapes, which looked like they hadn’t been washed in years, and very old, yellowed toilet seats make a noticeable difference. We received clean towels daily (which we appreciated), but the bathroom and toilet areas would benefit from a deeper clean and some basic updates. These small changes would elevate the guest experience significantly and reflect the true potential of the hotel.
The spa, on the other hand, was absolutely fantastic — a real highlight of our stay. With hot and cold natural spring pools, sauna, steam room, and a peaceful, traditional atmosphere, it felt truly special. I also had an amazing massage there. It’s a beautiful, calming space that really stands out.
The staff were always polite and helpful. The breakfast manager was especially kind and attentive, ensuring guests felt looked after, and the room-cleaning manager was also wonderful and professional. Mia at the reception was always very kind and helpful as well. Breakfast had plenty of choices and was a great start to each morning.
The hotel grounds themselves are stunning — full of charm, character, and classic Balinese beauty. Despite the rocky first night and the bathroom details, we left with many good memories and would happily return in the future, as long as the mold issue and small maintenance details are addressed. The location of the hotel is perfect, with 15 min walking distance to the town centre, where you get all the shops and restaurants of Ubud.
Tjampuhan Spa is a special place, and with a bit more attention to the older rooms and bathrooms, it could be exceptional.
