4 Best Day Trips from Rome

"As you approach this former castle, the medieval stone architecture makes quite an impression. The décor is a little dated, but the pool, gardens, and views of Tivoli more than make up for it. The location—a five-minute drive outside of town—is ideal for travelers who want a convenient, upscale stay from which to explore the hilltop village of Tivoli, the former summer retreat for ancient Romans and Renaissance-era moneyed folk." - Laura Itzkowitz, Arlene Gibbs

"How did it strike you on arrival? As you approach this former castle, the medieval stone architecture makes quite an impression. The décor is a little dated, but the pool, gardens, and views of Tivoli more than make up for it. The location—a five-minute drive outside of town—is ideal for travelers who want a countryside set-up. What’s the crowd like? The majority of guests are just like you: tourists who want a convenient, upscale stay as they explore the hilltop village of Tivoli, formerly a summer retreat for the ancient Romans. Tell us about your room. The rooms and suites are done up in a traditional Old World style, with damask wallpaper, heavy drapes, and patterned carpets. They could definitely use a refresh, but are adequate if you're not planning to spend much time in your room. How's the Wi-Fi.There's Wi-Fi in the common areas, but not in the rooms. Anything stand out about other services and features? There's parking on-site, so take advantage of your rental car and go out for dinner: Ristorante La Sibilla, or one of the other trattorias in town, offers a more memorable meal than the on-site restaurant. Bottom line: worth it, and why? This hotel is a convenient option if you need a place to crash in Tivoli, but not quite as five-star as other Italian countryside hotels. I would only recommend staying here if you're planning to spend most of your time out and about." - Laura Itzkowitz

Very pleasant traditional style hotel with spectacular views. A good 20 minute tricky walk into Tivoli & longer on the return as there are steep hills to negotiate. Rooms are spacious & comfortable, some might say rather old fashioned. Good bathroom but dated. Lovely terraces & pool. Ate in the dining room once for lunch, once for dinner. Simple but fresh meals using good quality ingredients. Better to have a car here

Hotel San Angelo is nothing short of beautiful and magnificent. It was converted into a hotel from a castle and monastery over 50 years ago and was renovated in 1994. The hotel has 35 good sized rooms with minibars and wifi throughout. The wifi is not the best, so a great excuse to get out and about. Not only do the comfortable rooms, marble floors, and delicious food and incredible staff make this hotel beautiful, but so do the views. Literally you can see all of Tivoli and beyond from the hotel perched on a winding hill. Because you can see so far and wide it is a little bit of a steep walk back up from town, but it is so worth it as this place is amazing. I definitely recommend staying here for a night or longer to enjoy the views, the lovely town, and the sights. The staff are happy to help guide you and also provide you with some of the best Italian food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is a bar that has a good selection of items that the staff can provide. But, also dinner includes wine and of course coffee! I will be back!

There was no hot water for shower the night we stayed, first we were told the there would be hot water in about one hour, then two hours later we were told somebody would fix it tomorrow. Seriously??? Also, the WiFi does not work, despite that our room was very close to reception. Really disappointed. And after I posted the review, the hotel replied saying that the it extended checkout time. However when I asked this morning, the checkout time I was told was still 11 am, so apparently we were not informed of the extended checkout time, or that the issue was fixed, even when I told receptionist again that there was no hot water at 10:40 am.

Wow. Amazing rooms, amazing breakfast, and amazing view. The hotel sits an easy 3 minute drive from downtown. Or, if you prefer, a liesurely 20 minute walk to Villa D'este. Parking is free and the pool is Romanesque sitting just below a hilltop Ansari and Olive tree farm. Simply put...wow!

Last time this place was worth four stars was in 1962. Let's start with the check-in, check-in for each room starts at 16:00, this shows the complete incompetence and lack of QC these people have whilst running a hotel. The facilities all look old and have numerous aesthetic flaws. Both WiFi and the air conditioning did not work. So they gave us a window mounted AC unit... In the middle of summer. In the bathroom there were discussing mold stains on the ceiling. Stay away from this nightmare of a hotel.

No one at reception when we arrived. Had to wait 10 minutes to check-in. Then received keys, dropped luggage in the room. I went to park the car and went back to the desk to retrieve passports and was told we had to change rooms. New room had no elevator, we had to drag our luggage o a flight of stairs. A/c barley works. The pool is nice. Restaurant in the hotel is closed on a Saturday night. The bar was not open. It is 3 stars at best with a view. Wi-fi is slow. Rooms are ok

Every room is different and ours friends’ was nicer than ours .. so check your room for satisfaction. With that being said - lovely setting, big rooms and very good, extensive breakfast! I’d stay again✔️

The air conditioning (AC) did not work properly and the staff seemed to think it was normal? Well located however and we liked the small city.
