The Best Hotels in the United Kingdom: 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards

"Olga Polizzi’s elegant seafront hotel on the edge of the picturesque village of St. Mawes in Cornwall is made up of a cluster of five immaculate white houses. The 30 bedrooms are decorated with Cornish art and furnished with an emphasis on high standards of craftsmanship and eye-catching fabrics: chic striped or muted florals in sea blue and white, and retro armchairs set with contemporary pieces. All offer magnificent views towards St. Antony’s Lighthouse. The best room is perhaps the Master Suite, featuring a “crow’s nest” terrace with unbroken views and a wood-burning stove in the lounge area. Just below the hotel stands the beach club, and in the restaurant the head chef, Paul Wadham, cooks up a storm with local produce that includes a variety of fresh fish. There’s even an option, for those who want to get out on the water, of taking a ride on the Tresanton’s 48-foot yacht, Pinuccia, built in 1939 to race for Italy, which is about as romantic as it gets." - Ramsay Short

We had the most fantastic and memorable meal again at the Tresanton to celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary. The setting on the terrace was beautiful, with stunning views—even when the heavens opened, we stayed perfectly dry and were so well looked after by Lydia, who couldn’t have done more to make us feel special. We laughed so much and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Amazing service, amazing setting— our anniversary tradition! We can’t wait to come back next year to our favourite place. Thank you Lydia and team!

A ok hotel but if I'm being completely honest I was disappointed with Tresanton. We have stayed at both the other Polizzi hotels and sadly Trenton is not the same standard as either The Star or Hotel Endsleigh.||Our room was slightly shabby and not spotlessly clean (it was a "dog-friendly" room and we were charged £25 / night extra for having our dog with us, but the extra cleaning had not happened before our stay, unfortunately). Of more concern was being presented with an incorrect bill. We were staying to celebrate my husband's birthday and some friends very kindly bought us a bottle of Camel Valley. This was presented to us on the first evening as we sat down to dinner, together with a card saying who the wine was from. However the hotel added the wine to our bill - fortunately I spotted this. The Receptionist merely agreed with me that this "wasn't very good" so I asked to speak with the Manager, who apologised in a sorry-not-sorry manner, and said she needed to "look in to" what had happened. She was pretty defensive of her staff, saying the waiting staff would not have known the wine was a gift. I pointed out that the bottle was presented with a card, and even if the waiting staff had not known about the gift, there should be checks in place to ensure guests are billed correctly. There were other errors on the bill, with the Manager offering the same excuse.||We left feeling I had not been offered the standard of service reasonably expected of a hotel of this standard and cost, and frankly also had concerns about whether the rest of the bill was correct - the format of the bill is opaque, merely stating "dinner", "drinks" without being able to check what was behind the charges listed. ||A real shame as we had high hopes of Hotel Tresanton and left disappointed. We would not go back.

Not exactly the hotel this refers to, but the drinks "shed" over the road. We were going on a walk to St. Just and needed a caffeine top-up before setting off. Delicious hot black Americano and a warmish latte (quite why these aren't made slightly warmer baffles me, but seems to be what it is), at an average cost. Recommended.

Have eaten/stayed at the Tresanton 20+ times over 60 years, and the food remains well considered, executed and delicious but…..the service is sloppy and 3*. We booked 6 months ahead but were given a table at the back of the terrace rather than the sea view. A girl with Asian heritage who showed us to our table was smiley and very attentive, but sadly we didn’t see her again. Her replacement was a tall boy with a mop of hair & glasses who spoke barely comprehensible English, repeatedly spilt the wine, and after we had ordered the most expensive item on the menu, a lobster/mixed fish soup/stew, and a moules marinière, neither came with the necessary spoon. There were 3 mistakes on the bill.

Service is excellent, hats off to the trainer and to the staff throwing themselves into it. When they ask 'are you having a nice stay?' You feel they want to know. Breakfast room light easy breezy feel. Food quality is high so no need for mounds of it. We had dinner twice, A loved his chocolate mouse so much and wanted it again sadly everyone liked it too. The monkfish was simply cooked and to perfection. As A is not a keen fish eater, he opted for beef fillet, beautifully done he said. Didnt share it! The rooms are understated and pleasant, bathrooms very nicely designed, particularly like the twin shower arrangement. The lounge had a fire. Love a fire who doesn't! Some areas are tired, like the sofas - one cushion had a good chunk cut out the side as If taken for a sneaky sample. We went out of season, so weather hit and miss and some gardens etc were closed. If you want lots more to do other than walk come from mid April.

Have often been to Endsleigh but this was our first trip to Tresanton, on the back of a 'Taste of Italy evening with Alex Polizzi'.||From the first welcome at Reception, to our departure the following morning with Alex even helping my wife with our bags (due to my inability to organise it with reception) as I fetched the car and overdosed on the views in the process, it was a truly great experience. The hotel is lovely; well maintained, well appointed, brilliantly located, and run by a fantastic team of staff with intuitive and perceptive managers. We couldn't have asked for more, and nothing was too much trouble.||The 'Taste of Italy' evening, hosted by Alex was a triumph. The table plan placed us on long tables where we were seated with other guests who we did not previously know (a good idea). Conversations flowed and not only did we have a great meal, supplied by efficient and smart waiters, Alex made a real effort to include everyone, both in the pre-dinner drinks and the dinner itself, delivering various personal and insightful speeches, and moving around the room to engage people. A not insignificant effort on her part whilst remaining charming, entertaining, and fun. ||Drinks on the terrace beforehand were a perfect 'set-up' for the evening and after a good night's sleep and enjoying the scene from our terrace, breakfast the following day was unhurried, delicious, and with a memorable view. It was good too to catch up with the people that we had met the night before, all also having had a great evening.||I've run out of superlatives... a cracking night and a brilliant introduction to the hotel to which we will most certainly return.

We had a lovely lunch at this hotel on Tuesday, the food was excellent, so we decided to come again for an evening meal on the Thursday. We were greeted by Emma, who was so welcoming and friendly and took the time to speak with us. This hotel enjoys a beautiful setting and I would recommend a visit.

My two nights at Hotel Tresanton were the highlight of a recent solo trip to Devon and Cornwall. ||Impossible to find fault with any aspect of my stay and my very high expectations were either met or exceeded. ||The Forte family know the hospitality business inside out and it is clear that Olga Polizzi runs a very tight ship at Tresanton - arguably the jewel in the Polizzi Collection. Her team of staff are very well drilled and are friendly, helpful and highly competent. They are well trained and clearly buy in to the high standards that Polizzi sets. ||To stay at Tresanton is an effortless, joyful experience that is well worth the expense.

Yelp
Top quality hotel and you can sense this as soon as you walk up the steps. Classic, modern and smart, with a smart dining room and large terrace overlooking the harbour. I've only rated not stayed here, but my parents have and said its wonderful-however it comes at a price! I can't image most people could justify more than 3 nights, but worth it for a short luxury break:) Despite the smartness, the staff are relaxed and children are welcome:)

Yelp
Great place to go for a drink, the cocktails are brilliant, the staff are knowledgable, friendly and professional. Their restaurant is serving some really good food too. If you are looking to celebrate a special occasion, these guys wont disappoint.

Yelp
This comment is about the restaurant at lunchtimes, well worth visiting, great views as always worth specifying a table with a view, or on the Terrace if the weather's good. Food good 2 courses about £20 without plonk. it's somewhere we try and take visitors to the area.

Yelp
This hotel is actually in St Mawes and not Truro. We have stayed here 3 times - once in summer, and twice at New Year. The New Year experience is truly awesome. The core of the hotel used to be fishermens' cottages, and has retained a quaint feeling whilst being decorated and furbished to a great standard. In summary its a realtively small boutique hotel, where service and quality of food / wine is everything. The food is truly stunning - it really is a fine dining experience. The staff throughout the hotel are not only helpful and polite, but very friendly and will bend over backwards to help you. St Mawes itself is a very pretty, unspolit village on a headland with only one road to access it. It is great in summer, with its small harbour and a couple of small beaches, and in winter there are fabulous walks around the paths which make up part of the Cornwall coastal path, topped off by a pint of guiness / local cider or three in the pub down the road. I would give this 6 stars if I could! Have added some photos

Yelp
We now live near St Mawes which has the one down side that we don't get to stay at the Tresanton any more! BUT, we do get to eat there. Lunch is actually my favourite meal to take here because of the stunning views across to St Anthony's head and the open sea. Dinner is also wonderful because the restaurant is a beautifully tasteful venue so we really enjoyed ourselves Saturday night, especially with the extra hour we were looking forward to. Here's the rub with these reviews: I would suggest that a plate of bad food at £5 was grossly expensive whereas £42 for three course when the food is so good should be considered very cheap! The Prosecco flowed like ermmm... wine! The staff are so professional and are led so well by Federica who I suspect has cloned herself - one person cannot be in so many places at one. We are already planning lunch there on Saturday to celebrate my wife's birthday

Yelp
Home made Icecream...yeah!!! True cornish with all the international know-how. Worth a trip. Catch the ferry from Falmouth and just pop over for the day. Expensive but a bloomin' good memory!

Yelp
Our three-day stay there was marvelous, and I know we'd like to return some day! The service, rooms, and restaurant were excellent, though the views looking out into the harbor and ocean exceeded our expectations and every angle was beautiful. Internet and phone service was sporadic, so for those visitors who depend on modern technology, that can be a bit of a problem.

Yelp
We had a relaxing lunch here and enjoyed the view from the terrace. A plus is being able to leave the car by the stairs, and it is valet parked and returned promptly after lunch. No hassling with the one way system and finding the car park. This was in 2017 so trust nothing has changed.

Yelp
Spent a long weekend here at the end of May. Wonderful location facing south over St Mawes Bay and St Anthony's lighthouse at the end of the St Mawes peninsula. It's a very comfortable hotel with an excellent restaurant. Wonderfully quiet and relaxing. Definitely not somewhere to go for nightlife, but if you want a quiet cocktail as the sun sets, then it would be hard to do better than this. Some easy walks from the hotel if you like a little gentle hiking to work up an appetite for dinner, and regular ferries across the harbour to Falmouth, the nearest metropolis.

Qype User (bugl…)

Yelp
Excellent hotel but not one for the kids really. We felt like we were disturbing the other guests every time our kids made any noise / cried etc. The rooms at the back of the hotel do not have the best soundproofing. Go with your partner / parents / in-laws etc but not with a big family.

Qype User (mounta…)

Yelp
Really nice hotel with great views. A bit of a hike to the car park but they will deliver your car if you ask. The rooms are very nice with nice bathrooms and some with balcony areas. The breakfast was good and the evening meal and cocktails are a must! Try the rib ride and see the seals or hop on the boat for a bit of shopping in Falmouth.

Yelp
also known as the 'Tranny' by locals, this is 'the' hotel to visit if you want to splurge some cash, pick up a boaty boy and sup champers whilst watching the sun set over the sea. truely chic and appropriately expensive, this is the place that old charlie boy stays, jermey clarkson kicks back and the wise and wealthy recoup.

Qype User (stemic…)

Yelp
nice nice nice! very exclusive and great location by the river/sea.
