The Best Affordable Hotels in Europe, According to Travel Experts

"In terms of location, it’s hard to beat Hotel Urban, which is about a 10-minute walk from Madrid’s world-class museums — the Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza — as well as Retiro Park. Doubles from $292." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Hotel Urban

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe?Super-tall chairs, a glass-lined bar, and Papua New Guinean statues all grace the lobby of Hotel Urban, and you can't help but notice them as you stroll from Puerta del Sol to the Prado. If those alone don’t catch your attention, the bellman with top hats certainly will. Inside, an atrium ceiling illuminates the public areas’ metal-and-steel beams, giving the space a futuristic, industrial look. What's the backstory? The Urban is in the Derby Hotels Collection, which has other properties around Spain. If you’re wondering about the plethora of Asian statues and artifacts, they all come from the owner’s personal collection from his travels. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book?Guest rooms have stark lines, minimalist decor mingle, art from the Far East, teak wood and leather furniture, and polished hardwood floors. The glass-walled bathrooms in some rooms may be a bit too hedonistic for some travelers; luckily, there are privacy shades in those rooms and others with more bathroom privacy. All rooms have comped minibars that come with a bottle of wine. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi?The wifi is free and fast. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?CEBO, led by Michelin-starred chef Aurelio Morales, serves dishes like Andalusian squid and glazed beef with eggplant and bone marrow. At Glass Mar, led by another Michelin-starred chef Angel Leon (dubbed the “chef of the sea”) a light and airy restaurant facing the street, a seafood menu pairs well with colorful Spanish Sherry-based cocktails. There's also a lively rooftop bar and a new wine cellar where Sommelier Jacinto Domenech offers wine and Sherry Wine tastings. And the service?Formal but friendly. Just don’t traipse in wearing a T-shirt and flip flops and expect immediate attention. What type of travelers will you find here?Briefcase-toting business travelers swap glances with tourists from around the world. What about the neighborhood? This is a major thoroughfare that connects Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor with Paseo del Prado. The hotel is always packed with tourists, but nearby government buildings also assure plenty of local foot traffic. During our visit, the royal family was standing just outside the entrance to welcome the newest entrants to Spain’s congress. The walk to Gran Vía and the Royal Palace is easily navigable from here, too. Is there anything you'd change? We'd love to see more public areas that don't require guests to shell out for a drink or pricey meal. Any other hotel features worth noting? In the basement, the owners' private collection of artifacts and jewelry from Papua New Guinea and the Far East are on display. Bottom line: Why should we stay here? This is an edgy address in a great location." - Ramsey Qubein

Excellent hotel in the heart of Madrid. I’ve stayed at several Hilton properties in Spain, and this one is remarkable. Service is exceptional and the design of the hotel is very sleek. We were treated very well. The hotel has many nice touches such as flat irons in the rooms, steam irons, robes, slippers, stocked mini fridge, etc. The breakfast was superb and the fresh squeezed juice blends were delicious. Beds are extremely comfortable. The pool is small, but very nice on a hot summer day. Patricia and Brian at the check-in desk helped us resolve a billing issue with absolute grace and kindness. We will definitely return.

This hotel is beautiful, and the reception staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. However, a number of things negatively impacted our stay, and for those reasons, I did not enjoy my stay here, and would not recommend it to others, unless some policy changes are made. First of all one of the reasons that we selected this hotel is because of the beautiful rooftop pool and terrace. However, a number of policies made it very difficult for us to utilize these spaces. For example, the pool is only open from 11 AM to 8 PM – the prime hours for working or exploring the city. This means we were unable to take a dip before starting our day, or upon returning from dinner and whatever else we had going on that day. The terrace area is attached to the bar, and as such it has very strict rules around its use that prohibited us from making use of it. For example, we pulled out a small board game and we were told that games were not allowed. We came to this area after coming from the pool area (they are right next to each other) and we were told that we cannot wear towels in this area. Then we were very angrily told off for lightly putting our feet on the outdoor ottoman beside the couch--we could only put feet on the small table next to the ottoman, not the ottoman itself. One to two bar staff stood silently not 15 feet from us the entire time we were there, which also made us feel uncomfortable. We were extremely polite, quiet, and respectful to other patrons during our time, but we felt so micro-managed that we quickly finished our drinks and felt confined to our room the rest of our stay, which felt like the only place we could quietly play a game, have some privacy, and relax (without paying for a $20 cocktail). We've told several future travellers about this negative experience and advised them not to stay at this hotel for those reasons. Alot of potential and a beautiful space, but very constrained and stressful atmosphere.

Hotel was extremely architecturally attractive inside the lobby and internally. The staff was well trained from the front doorman to the waitstaff in the restaurants. I was very impressed overall and would say that the hotel definitely deserved 5 stars. The pool area upstairs albeit small was so nice and staffed extremely well. The room was not as nice as rest of hotel but still was nice enough.||I’ve stayed in about 5 hotels in Madrid and this is my favourite. It’s location is fabulous as well (close to the Four Seasons as well)

Google
This hotel is one of the best I have ever stayed at. I travelled for business but had to extend my stay due to health reasons. The staff was incredibly helpful and kind. The rooms are very comfortable and kept clean to the highest standards. The art on display makes the hotel something special. And the breakfast is amazing. Thank you Hotel Urban for a lovely stay, your excellent service and kind attitude. Definitely staying here again.

Google
Truly exceeded all expectations. The service could not have been better, nor the ovation. I picked the hotel because it was close to where I wanted to be, but somehow it seems to be perfectly central to everywhere we went. I walked no more than 20 minutes to everything. Special thanks to Katarina for her amazing recommendations, and this may very well have been the very best hotel breakfast I’ve enjoyed anywhere in the world, in terms of service, freshness and what I enjoy. Also, the pool and balcony bar are so relaxing. Just a perfect stay.

Hotel Urban won us over and easily became one of our favorite hotels ever. From top to bottom, this hotel is a true 5-Star. Immediately upon arrival they made us feel welcomed and made everything so easy. The hotel itself is spotless, modern, and a visually stunning place. Rooms were impeccable. Perfect size for us and all of the amenities we could ask for. Again, clean and modern; house keeping was on the ball every time and even offered turn down service. Room included a free mini bar with water, beer, juice, and soda which we very much appreciated. Location was ideal being walking distance to all of the main attractions and still close to the old streets with great restaurants that we enjoyed greatly so much in Madrid. The bars and pool were probably our favorite part of this stay. The rooftop is beautifully designed with an enclosed bar, lounge style seating outside, and a pool with a variety of seating. Drinks were delicious and well thought out. Bartenders were attentive and true masters of their craft. The downstairs bar was no different. A very comfortable area to relax and enjoy a drink in a lovely looking establishment. I can not recommend this hotel more and is the main reason I would come back to Madrid

Location, location location! The Urban is definitely one of those little secrets in Madrid if you plan to walk and enjoy the Madrid Center. The staff is very friendly and catered to all our request. Not one thing went wrong here. Breakfast is also very very nice and was included on the rate...you can also order a few things a la carte inspired by Cebo restaurant (extra cost)||The design of the hotel/rooms is modern with sculptures all around including inside the rooms. Very modern and stylish. Its's a small hotel with 6 floors so it's intimate and very private. We had a corner Suite with an excellent view of the front street. Windows are double glass so outside sounds are minimize. Bathroom on the Suite is more than adequate with bathtub, separate shower and toilet plus 2 sinks.||Our mood was having fun around Madrid center area so having a 1-Star Michelin restaurant on-site, a lobby bar on par with the restaurant and a nice (small rooftop bar with pool did helped round up our experience. There are plenty of very good restaurants/bars around the hotel, even on the same block. Plaza Mayor/Mercado San Miguel is probably 10-15 minutes away by foot. Sol in around 10 minutes away, Retiro Park another 10-15 minutes. To sum it up the location is excellent, leave the car at the valet (extra cost) as traffic in Madrid is horrible.||I would recommend Urban Hotel in a heartbeat to anyone looking for a luxurious stays (modern style) , intimate and close to major attractions within walking distance. Definetly a 5-star stay. Looking forward to our next stay!

I had a truly wonderful stay at this hotel. The central location made it easy to explore the city and get to all the main attractions. From the moment I arrived, the front desk was very welcoming, and I want to give special thanks to Lily for her top-notch customer service—she made me feel right at home. The hotel’s high-class customer service was evident throughout my stay. The staff were attentive and always ready to help, which made my experience even more enjoyable. I also appreciated the unique atmosphere, enhanced by the beautiful artifacts from Papua New Guinea displayed around the property. The food was absolutely top-notch, with a great variety and excellent quality at every meal. One of my favorite features was the small but beautiful rooftop swimming pool, perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for comfort, great service, and a unique touch in the heart of the city.

Yelp
Had a business meeting here, the staff was outstanding. I have a gluten allergy and they made sure i had something to eat during our group meals. Its a trendy hotel. The concierge did a nice job on helping me get tickets to the Real Madrid game. Awesome seats. The rooms was nice.

Yelp
Check out the complete review at: https://www.randallosche.com/post/the-hotel-urban Golden Triangle Located in the heart of the city's "Golden Triangle," formed by the El Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and the Reina Sofía National Art Museum, only a few meters from the city's main tourist attractions, such as Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and the Parque del Retiro park. During my stays, I took full advantage of the location. I visited Parque del Retiro twice, which is only a 12-minute walk from the hotel. On my first visit, I took a walk through a portion of the park and stopped for an Americano and to do some people-watching. The following day I took a 6-mile (9-kilometer) run through the park. The park is huge, and even with a 9 Kilometer run, I only covered a portion of the park. During my time in Spain, I initially spent time in Madrid, then in Barcelona, and finally back to Madrid for one last night before my departing flight from Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) the following day. Upon my return to Madrid from Barcelona, I could have stayed closer to the airport, maybe that was the most practical move, or I could have stayed in a different part of the city to explore more, but because my initial stay at The Hotel Urban was so outstanding, I opted to spend my final night in Madrid there. Early Check-in I do not handle missing a night of sleep well. When you fly from the states to Europe all flights are in the evening and you arrive in Europe in the morning, meaning that you miss out on a night of beauty rest. This was top of mind for me on my day of departure from the states. So much so, that I emailed the hotel asking about a potential earlier check-in. I wasn't expecting much if anything at all, nevertheless I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask in advance. The Hotel Urban not only read the email but also called me, twice! Unfortunately, I was boarding a flight and couldn't speak, but they persisted and followed up with me via email regarding my request. I was taken aback by the service that I was already receiving, and I hadn't even checked into the hotel yet. The Bar/Pool I'm usually not a lounge-by-the-pool type of guy, but I spent an entire afternoon poolside. It was very vibie. Maybe it's the environment the hotel created, maybe it's the type of clientele that the hotel attracts, but the pool area is very chill. People read books, dipped their toes in the water, and chatted quietly with their lounge chair neighbors or companions. They had fresh towels for all, a full-time pool attendant, and servers from the bar making sure you were all taken care of with your refreshments. Me, I had 1 Nordes gin and tonic, and almost faded into a blissful nap poolside, after being mostly awake for two days. Turndown Service Turndown Service: a service that is offered in some hotels in which the evening guest room is made ready for them to sleep in, for example turning down the bed top covers. Different hotels will provide different turndown services. Don't worry, this is mostly new to me too. At The Hotel Urban, they would close the curtains, place floor mats on each side of the bed, so your tootsies don't touch the cold floor in the morning, and placed a piece of chocolate on the nightstands as well. On my second stay, they placed a fresh-cut rose in my room, which I thought was a rather lovely touch as well. Must-Visit Nearby Restaurants La Rollerie La Rollerie is my second favorite café in Madrid, through no fault of their own. If you've been following along and read my review of Murillo Café, I think you'd be able to understand why. I noticed La Rollerie before even checking into Hotel Urban. As the taxi was getting closer, I was keeping an eye out for somewhere that looked inviting to grab some breaky once I had checked in. La Rollerie, sit prominently on the corner of a building right at an intersection, about a block before Hotel Urban. It has a massive storefront window that you can peep in to view all of the I'm-cheating-on-diet-today-pastries that they have available. It's a 1-minute walk from the hotel, about 85 meters. La Cabana Argentina Upon my return to Madrid, I had to purchase a new piece of luggage to make my return trip to the states more convenient. Don't ask, I overpacked and didn't have room to take back the stuff I bought! While checking in I asked the hotel staff if they had any recommendations on where I might be able to find a new suitcase. They had recommended a local shop not far from the hotel. The magic here is that this particular shop was down a street I hadn't yet journeyed down before, C. de Ventura de la Vega. To my pleasant surprise, I was passing a bunch of restaurants that I wish I had known were there earlier in the week on my first visit. (Deep regret was sinking in.) Yelp
Great Hotel with excellent service! First off, the property is beautiful.. great lobby, glass elevators, Glass Cocktail Bar & CEBO on main floor & rooftop pool up on the sixth floor with bar & food. Rolling in... doorman opens the door for you if you know what I mean. Had arrived pretty early for check and they simply said *no problema, your room is ready!* Upon check-in bags brought to room & functions of room explained along with a bottle of wine.. it's a nice touch.. they said. Nice room with wood floors, great bed, upstairs lounge area with another TV & leather couches, fancy artwork, outstanding functional bathroom complete with bidet! Everything in the fridge is complimentary.. some beers, cokes, water, etc.. another nice touch. The ONLY drawback I had here was the A/V set up, it's just dated with a smallish tv, minimal channels and not really capable of playing your music/ mirroring or much of anything. The staff was exceptional.. the girls at the front desk will do just about anything for you.. including booking a massage. (Sophie) Great restaurant recos as well! Now Madrid is a big city with a ton to see and PEOPLE everywhere so it's really nice to just go up to the pool and HIDE with a drink. Don't expect a big pool.. but good spot to enjoy the beautiful weather with nice views & great drinks & service! I sat up here 4 afternoons in a row and loved it. Check it out at dusk for some great photos, they said. Nice cocktail bar downstairs called Glass that's really something to see & not a bad spot to end the night or start. The location is literally perfect as it is a bit East of all the hot spots but only a 10 minute walk to Lavapies if you know what I mean! Also, the street next to the Hotel must have 20 restos as well as a great dive bar called Le Galleria around the corner/ must see!! I would highly recommend this property to anyone going to Madrid.. especially for the first time// talk later

Yelp
The bar downstairs called Glass has amazing and creative starters of seafood and delicious non commercial wines, featuring the creative cuisine of Angel Leon chef from Andalusia. I loved the smoked sardine appetizer, muscatel dessert wine and the Ramsat Chardonnay. The staff is very attentive and kind, and the food is absolutely superb in addition to being delicious and esthetically presented.

Yelp
This is a review for the bar not the hotel. The rooftop bar here doesn't have the spectacular views of Bellas Artes and the drinks are mega expensive but they and the staff are very nice and they also do proper tapas like croquetas. I'd say it's ideal for a pre-dinner weekday drink.

Yelp
I love this hotel !the staff is friendly the rooms are nice and clean ,great room service and the staff is really friendly ..go for it! A very cool roof top great for views and photos ..cocktails ..great bar downstairs for a drink and a snack

Yelp
This little gem is just up the street from my fav hotel in Madrid (the Palace). Just a few minutes walk (and I mean VERY few since I don't like to walk) and you walk down a few stairs from street level into what the Spanish call the Crystal bar which in English means "glass". With see-through acrylic chairs, table and bar,- it's easy to see how it got it's name. It's a very fun chic place to have a drink w/it's 21st century decor, svelte cocktail waitresses and glam clientele: when I was there s bunch of models looking very "Victoria's Secret" were having a party and sipping Tattinger Rose Champagne all night! When in Madrid,- stay @ the Palace and party @ the "Glass Bar"!! :-))

Yelp
Gorgeous rooftop. Good service and decent drinks was slow when we went but I'm sure irs fun when busy. We still enjoyed the quiet night.

Yelp
This is an outstanding hotel. The staff were superb, very accommodating, warm, helpful and genuinely interested. The room was comfortable and perfect for our needs. They let us check in early after our long international flight because our room was ready. The hotel is centrally located and not far from the Prado and the Cuenca District. The rooftop is a great addition to the hotel and a perfect place to have a drink at night. The breakfast was excellent, with a diverse spread and a Gluten free breakfast cake. This hotel is worthy of 5 stars. I've stayed all over the world, and this hotel is excellent. I will return.

Yelp
Staff was nice but don't complain to the manager, unless you want to hear a lot of excuses. The hotel has lots of wood and glass. No carpet. That means whenever anyone is in the hallway or adjoining rooms, they might as well be in your room. Noisy. And don't expect to lounge around the pool much. There are only 4 lounge chairs. Other seating consists of uncomfortable mats on the ground surrounding a very small and not too clean pool. The photos of this hotel are misleading. I wanted to switch hotels as soon as we arrived but weariness from travel convinced us to stay. At least the location was convenient but there are plenty of other nearby hotels that are much nicer.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience! From the moment we were greeted to the moment we checked out, we were treated royally. Every member of the staff was attentive and helpful. We also highly recommend Glass Mar, the bar and restaurant. It's the perfect home away from home.

Yelp
Super nice and friendly hotel. It has nice cosy and contemporary rooms. Breakfast is very good, staff really friendly and helpful. The bar is always lively and you can eat from a small but well selected menu. Highly recommended !

Yelp
Great location and easy walking to most things. Staff in Glass Bar and front desk was terrific. Be warned of the following: paper thin walls. Had to ask to be moved at 4am so we didn't have to listen to the neighbor talking on his phone. Hardwood floors do not mix well with women coming back in high heels at 2am. Terrible mattress and pillows. Hard thin mattress, no fluff, old style motel comforter. It was a beautiful hotel and lovely staff, but would not revisit.

Yelp
A super nice., upscale bar amongst a sea of lesser places. An oasis as it were. A little bit more in price but it is worth every penny. They are service oriented and very friendly ....appealing to professionals who want to be treated well. Great experience.

Yelp
In August of 2010, my mother and I took our first trip to Madrid and stayed for 6 days at the Hotel Urban. She booked this place off of the strength that it was one of the more "artistic" museums, since my main reason for traveling, as an art history major, is to experience the art and culture. I loved this hotel. The decor from the lobby, to the bar, to the elevator, to the hallways to our room was nothing but artistic and inspiring. It was bursting with culture. Our room was very simple, the bathroom was gorgeous and there's even a pool on the roof. The staff was very helpful and welcoming. I loved Madrid and part of the reason our trip was so pleasant was due to our stay at this hotel. It's extremely modern, stylish and in the perfect location. This hotel is walking distance from the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia. The tour buses make several stops surrounding this hotel, so it's very easy to travel and get around the city. There are also plenty of stores, restaurants and bars within walking distance. I truly recommend staying here.
