Where to Stay in Amsterdam (Updated 2025)

"Conveniently located in the heart of the Museum Quarter, Hostel Van Gogh is Van Gogh–inspired with artsy murals, spacious and tidy dorms, and friendly staff — I think it’s the best budget option in the area." - Matthew Kepnes

Stayed here for 4 nights. Great location in the museum district. Public transportation steps away from the hotel entrance. Surface bus (#397) to/from the airport took ~25 minutes. Walk time to Centraal is ~30 minutes. Hotel was quiet and clean. There is a mini refrigerator and hot water kettle in the room.

Room is very clean and so welcoming, especially with the lovely Van Gogh sunflower on the wall🌻 Staff is so friendly and kind and it really makes your holiday a nice experience. I had breakfast with a cappuccino and croissant: so tasty! 100% recommend, I am looking forward to coming back!

I had two rooms booked for our family trip, and overall, we had a very pleasant stay. The rooms were clean—including the beds, towels, and overall space. We were a bit concerned beforehand due to some negative reviews, but our experience turned out to be very positive. Its bed arrangement was great; instead of just one or two large beds, the rooms had several individual beds, which worked great for our family. Everyone slept well. The location was ideal for us. We visited multiple museums nearby, and it was easy to access public transportation. Since the hotel is not in the city center, it was also convenient for getting in and out of Amsterdam. There were great restaurants and shopping areas close by as well.

I wish I could give this establishment a higher rating.||Had a lovely room - large and sunny. Kids play ground from local school beneath.||Reasonable breakfast.||Desk staff doing super long double shifts is a sign of some issues.||Everything was ok until I realised a large amount of euro was stolen from my room.||I’m not going to bother reporting it to Police or taking it up with staff because that is a waste of time.||I hoped as a solo female traveller I would be safe in this district. ||I didn’t expect the threat to be from within my room.||I know when it happened exactly.||I wish I had booked my last hotel from last trip.||And it was not inexpensive either.||Last morning I left before 7 am. There were party goers that weren’t staying in the hotel sleeping in the breakfast room before it opened for guests. ||They were then removed and sleeping on the ground outside of the hotel.||It’s all left quite a disturbing feeling.

The location is great! Close to restaurants, Vondel Park and museums. Even a playground is right in front of it. However, be aware that if you are traveling with a stroller: there are stairs when entering (3steps) and that the staff will not help you. Sometimes they say hello but not always and don’t ask how your stay was. FYI: They charge for early check-in even if you travel with a baby. We were otherwise happy with the room, the cleaning service and the breakfast.

Great location for museums. Easy bus ride from airport as the museum square is one of the stops . In advance received an email reminding of checking in time , but offering to look after bags earlier - so we arrived about 1pm to drop bags off. Gentleman at reception was frosty - there was no friendly welcome- but he allowed us to use the toilet and did look after our bags. The remaining staff we encountered were friendly enough.|There is a safe in the room and the shower/toilet were clean as was the room. We had a small balcony and teabags and coffee pods were available, although not restocked whilst we were out. I had to go to the breakfast bar and help myself. |The room has air con and a TV. Walking to the canals takes about half an hour which was not a problem for us, but there are plenty of trams. Breakfast was good with a range of options - hot being scrambled eggs; sausage; bacon; mushroom. No toast - but bread; croissant; pain au chocolate and rolls. Boiled eggs; cheeses; salad; jams; fruit; cereal and yogurt. |Overall we enjoyed our stay , but can’t comment on helpfulness of staff as we didn’t have the need to ask them anything other than to look after our bags (could have been better) and for more teabags- directed to help self.

The hotel itself was quite good overall. The cleanliness was excellent and the rooms were very comfortable, which I really appreciated. However, what really disappointed me was the customer service. When we arrived, the person at the reception spoke to us in a very rude tone. Every question was answered in a harsh, unfriendly way. While we were waiting at the desk, he even started talking with other staff members (I think from the kitchen/dining area) and continued speaking about clients in the same rude and dismissive manner, without caring that we were standing right there. It felt very unprofessional and disrespectful, and it definitely affected my experience at the hotel. It’s a shame, because everything else, the rooms and cleanliness, was perfectly fine.

Aside from the location, there's really nothing good about this hotel. We stayed at XO Hotels Van Gogh for 3 nights, and the experience was incredibly disappointing from the moment we arrived. The front desk staff was rude and unwelcoming. Our first room on the 4th floor had a strong, unpleasant odor. Thankfully, we were moved to a room on the 1st floor, but it was an old, dingy corner room that still felt gross.||The bath towels were thin and worn out. Room service was almost non-existent — they made the bed and changed the towels, but never vacuumed or cleaned properly. It was clear the room wasn’t even cleaned well before we arrived.||Throughout our stay, the staff rarely greeted us and showed no warmth. The entire atmosphere felt cold and neglected — more like a low-end hostel than a hotel. It’s obvious the owners don’t care about the quality or their employees, and it shows.||It’s a shame this hotel uses the name “Van Gogh” — it’s an insult to the artist. For the rates they charge, the quality and service are completely unacceptable. I would never stay here again or recommend it to anyone.
