So I am a fan of Rick Steves... He suggested that when traveling in Europe that you should try staying off the beaten path. So I thought, you know... I should try that. ||I chose this hotel from the reviews on Tripadvisor and for the "history that is in the walls" as one review said. There was another reviewer that just trounced this hotel. So, who's right? Well, they both are. ||If you are choosing this hotel for history and the view. Then go for it. My "Grand Superior Double Room" did have an incredible view down through the valley. The room is definitely in need of a refresh though. The *one* bedside lamp wasn't plugged in, and when I did, it still didn't work. You may ask, "Why not call the front desk" well, because there's no phone in the room. This isn't really what I would expect for a $174 Euro a night room. As others have mentioned, there's no elevator, so if you packed heavy, ask for a low floor. ||I did have a look around the hotel a bit and stuck my head in the indoor pool, which looked very nice, except it was *very* warm in there. That could be because of the Sauna and being from America, this could be a normal thing. ||The bed was pretty hard, and the pillows were the oddest I've ever seen. At first I thought they were just sheets balled up inside a square pillow case. I ended up waking up with a stellar headache. ||The TV barely worked... the Satellite connection was so bad, I believe the dish may need to be repointed. There is free WiFi, so bring a tablet, or laptop. ||The breakfast was ok, but nothing to get super excited about. The eggs weren't powdered, and the frankfurters they served with them were quite good. The yogurt seemed very thin, almost watered down. The bread was pretty awesome, but it's Germany, right? I wasn't acknowledged when I came in, nor did anyone check on me. ||The hotel is hard to find, even with GPS, because it sits right *on* the street and I drove past it twice because it doesn't look like it does in the photos on TripAdvisor - I'll try to add some to this review.. There's *no* parking on site, but there is a public lot across the street. This is generally a pay lot, but I was here ion the weekend, and so there was no charge.||Speaking of paying for things.... I pre-paid this via Booking.com to get a discount. When I arrived, the front desk person asked if I wanted to use my card. It had been a long day, and I just handed it to him - shame on me. That night I was looking through my credit card trasnactions and I saw a charge from them *and* Booking.com. When I went to the front desk, the desk person said "oh yeah, I see it now (he was the same person who checked me in)" He then asked if he could just give me a cash refund. I felt this was pretty unusual, but whatever. Then he told me he wouldn't be able to refund the local "Hotel Tax", which I should have already paid with booking.com. There was a VAT on the booking.com reservation. The difference was 3 Euro, and I wasn't going to argue over 3 Euro or go fight with my credit card company on a chargeback, so I took the cash, but he continued to insist that I pay 2 fees for the "local tourist tax". I tried to explain to him there was only one of me, and I only paid for *one* room to no avail. Good thing I caught it before I left.... that wouldn't have been fun to deal with from home.
