Historic building in a convenient location. $45 a day valet parking, city is easily walkable and there is free bus service. The restaurant and bar are reasonably priced considering the location. Our dinners were excellent, made more so by our waitress. She was personable, friendly and efficient. She seemed to really enjoy her job, so much so that when she saw us leave to take a walk the next morning, she came out to wave to us!|Now for the not so good things. As others have said, the air conditioning is extremely noisy, causing interrupted sleep. The bathroom is unusual to say the least. I could not spit toothpaste in the sink without banging my head on the mirror. Perhaps if the toilet was higher, I could have sat there to brush my teeth, wash my face. There is only one hook for towels. If you turn on the light in the bathroom during the night, the glass pane allows the light to shine on the bed.

It was my first time in Newport for a work conference and I really have to thank hotel Viking for convincing me to never go back to that town again. Had a horrible stay in a room that had a vibrating sound in the floor all night. The rooms were definitely not 5 star quality and they should take away that false advertising. Nothing about this hotel spoke 5 star let alone 4 star. Now the worst part of this stay was the customer service. I checked out a day earlier due to a family emergency and I spoke with the front desk. They printed out a bill with my final price of about $500 and I left. The next day, I received a charge of $1200 on my credit card and I tried to call the front desk but no one picked up the phone. I proceeded to try calling 4-5 times a day for the next 3 weeks and still no answer. When I finally reached someone, he said he they had a contract with the company so had to charge for the full weekend which when I checked out- the guy did not mention that so I was already annoyed. Then he told me he would email me the receipt and so I hung up and trusted him. It’s been 2 more weeks and still no email from them of the final bill. Please stay away from this hotel if you’re trying to be scammed. Ive been staying at hotels for work and personal for a very long time and this hotel might be worst than red roof inn. At least at red roof inn, I can still get my final bill.

We stayed at the Viking Hotel in Newport, RI from September 6–8. While the property has a historic charm and a convenient location, our overall experience fell far short of expectations given the price point. Booking & Check-In Booking was confusing — rooms appeared available online, but when we called the hotel, they claimed no rooms were open and couldn’t see the same availability we found. Check-in itself was easy, but we were surprised to learn that parking is valet-only at $45 per night, a detail not mentioned on the website. No information was provided about hotel amenities or local recommendations at arrival. Room Experience We stayed in a two-room suite that felt old and poorly maintained. The room had visible water damage on the ceiling that was damp to the touch. The air conditioners were noisy, housed in makeshift wooden boxes propped up with scrap wood. On the positive side, the bed and linens were comfortable. Bathroom The bathroom setup was awkward and uncomfortable. The sink was in a small hallway with no mirror, and the toilet and shower were behind a glass door that offered no privacy. The shower door repeatedly hit the tile sill, and we worried the glass might break. Dining We tried both lunch and breakfast in the hotel restaurant. While the food was decent, service was extremely slow — at times, no staff was even visible in the dining room. Spa & Facilities We booked massages at the spa, which were expensive but underwhelming. My hot stone massage barely involved hot stones. The hot tub jets were not functioning, and the indoor pool was uncomfortably cold. Service & Housekeeping On a positive note, the staff was consistently friendly and housekeeping did a good job keeping the room tidy during our stay. Location & Atmosphere The hotel is well-situated, perched at the top of the hill near the mansions and within walking distance to attractions. The rooftop bar with large fire pits and comfortable seating was a highlight. The property itself has historic character, and we were told renovations are planned — which are certainly needed. Overall Impression Unfortunately, the stay was not worth the premium price paid. While the location and friendliness of the staff were positives, the outdated rooms, poor spa experience, and lack of transparency about parking detracted significantly. I would not stay here again until after renovations are completed.

My partner and I have 350+ hotel stays between us and agree this was in the bottom 10%||The suite was quite warm on our arrival (nearly 80 degrees) and soon after turning on the remarkably loud air conditioners in both rooms, they began to cycle ON/OFF every few minutes, with each cycle marked by extremely loud banging sounds (like closing of heavy metal doors!!). When we turned on the bedroom TV to try to drown out the noise, we discovered that this TV didn’t work. It was late so we put in our ear buds and tried to get some sleep. Turns out the ear buds were no match for the air conditioners, so we turned them off, opting to sleep hot vs not at all.||In the morning, we opened the blinds only to discover that our second floor suite was at eye level with workers on the roof. They saw us and placed a bit of insulation over the widow (in an attempt to give us some privacy or protect us from their construction debris?). ||We let management know and then went about our day in Newport. On our return, it was clear someone had been in our room as we had flies in the room that weren’t there when we had left in the morning. Management called to say that they had sent someone to the room to work on the air conditioners, but we confirmed they were no better. ||We tried to make it through the second night by only having the sitting room AC unit on but even this frustrated sleep. ||In the morning we checked out and told management of the issues. They were sympathetic and shared that the entire hotel will soon be closed for 6 months for renovations! In recognition of the unpleasantries we encountered, they did refund the resort fee (that we hadn’t realize was a an additional $100 add-on to the room charges!). ||Had we known that the renovation was imminent, we would never have booked a pricy suite at a hotel so in need of maintenance and renovation.

Google
If I could give this place negative five stars I would. Clearly all the disingenuous responses back from hotel staff hasn’t changed anything as I experienced all the same things I read in other reviews. 1) A/C in room doesn’t work. I called the front desk and stopped by 4 times over 2 days. Their explanation is that the circuit kept tripping and I guess somehow that was my problem? 2) Beds are not comfortable and small, pillows are lumpy, ended up getting 10 hours of sleep over 2 nights. Not fun when on a business trip. 3) $45 for overnight valet parking. Which is literally your only option, unless you want to walk a .5 mile and risk parking on poorly signed roads where you don’t quite know where parking is allowed. 4) Generally low value for your money. If it wasn’t a work trip, I would have demanded a new room immediately or moved to another hotel. As others have said…stay away if possible. There are plenty of other excellent B&B’s and hotels in Newport to choose from where they actually care about their guests.

Google
Definitely no longer a five star hotel. Rooms look a little beat up and run down very few amenities for a high-end room no slippers no robes no toiletry kits. Nothing just soap and shampoo in pump bottles. Rooftop bar, old furniture smelly cushions was not open the hours they stated. Great central location. Breakfast was good.

My husband and I travel frequently, which is why I contribute often to this platform. We recently stayed at the Viking Hotel in Newport, RI, drawn by its strong online reviews and convenient downtown location. Unfortunately, at $700 per night, our experience was deeply disappointing.||Upon check-in, we were assigned Room 2023. The room felt dark and gloomy. The bathroom fan was caked with dust, and the area around the toilet appeared to have dried urine stains. My husband later admitted he also noticed a vomit odor upon arrival, though he didn’t mention it right away. Before heading to dinner, I requested that the front desk have the vent and bathroom floor cleaned. While the vent was addressed, the floor still looked discolored—likely stained—and the room itself retained a strong vomit smell.||At that point, we called down and were moved to Room 3023. This was a noticeable improvement, and we felt more comfortable. However, even here the bathroom had water damage in the corner and signs of black mold. By then, we were exhausted from the back-and-forth and chose not to raise the issue again, preferring to salvage what little time we had for a getaway without our four children.||Sadly, based on this experience, I cannot recommend the Viking Hotel. As a top-tier Hyatt member, I regret not booking the Attwater instead.

Thank you to the whole staff at The Viking for making our stay a wonderful experience. From the warm welcome of your valets to the friendly market staff & housekeepers everyone was very friendly & welcoming. Upon arrival (valets work late) we received an upgraded room, and our experience just kept getting better. With every interaction, pleasantries were exchanged & questions were thoughtfully answered considering our age & mobility. Due to our mobility issues, we often need a lot of information or assistance to get the most out of visits. This type of real time information on distances, sidewalk conditions & seating availability can be invaluable, that only hotel staff can supply in real time. Your staff genuinely shined in this category, explaining our transportation options, retrieving items from our car, addressing dietary issues and discussing preferences. We would definitely stay in your hotel when in the area again. Thank You All.

Yelp
The hotel is beautiful and in a great location. It is walking distance to Bowman's Wharf and all the shops. We were able to check in early and get late check out. It is not worth the expensive price tag. The king room is nice, but the bathroom is not as nice. The shower looks like it is from a Days Inn and does not reflect luxury. We saw some guests with robes and we never received them. They are welcome to accept pets at $150 cleaning fee and $50 per day on top of a $300 per night stay. Valet parking overnight is now $45 plus tax. This rate is up from last year. This year we parked on the side street for free. Also the resort fee that I've paid in the past isn't worth it. You will not have a relaxing hot tub experience. It is filled with 2 year old children using the hot tub and pool. It is a shame because it is a beautiful hotel and we love boutique hotels. We will be looking for another place to stay for Thanksgiving.

Yelp
Came here for an event and these photos include scenes from the Top of Newport bar, located on the roof. Was impressed with the professionalism and helpfulness of all of the staff members. When we came in we were not sure exactly where we were headed & a gentleman from the entry way area helped us find our way. The event we were attending was clearly marked from the elevator onward. The event that we attended had a buffet but it was kept clean and constantly refilled so that none of the food looked as if it had been sitting. That's one of my biggest pet peeves with serve-yourself food but again, it was handled in a very clean manner and this was a large event. We tried the Top of Newport drink made with Tito's vodka. We also enjoyed the sunset views. The ocean is in sight from the comfort of a fireplace ... and we enjoyed good company into the blue sky of the evening!! Thank you so much!

Yelp
This hotel is super cute. The kitchen also puts out some pretty good food, the staff is extremely professional and attentive. They do have elevators, large lobby area and lounges. The rooftop of the hotel has a full bar and can be booked for events! The entrance has ample room to pull up, and valet service. Feels historic and nice and cozy.

Yelp
So disappointed. The setting is beautiful but the hotel is definitely showing signs of neglect. Our room was nice and bedding was good but the bathroom was BAD. Also, our room overlooked the courtyard and that was nice BUT the hotel neglected to tell us there would be a private party in the courtyard and live music until 930pm. I know that might not be that late but it was so LOUD that it made watching TV or sleeping difficult.

Yelp
Stayed the Tuesday before Thanksgiving . No restaurant open till dinner no on site breakfast until Thursday's Called front today no answer all morning Place looks like it's going out of business Called to have my car brought around took 40 minutes Stay somewhere else

Yelp
Driving from New York to Hotel Viking was interesting. On Monday the weather was foggy, I drove over two bridges with fog as thick as pea soup! The next day, the fog lifted and exposed the beautiful surroundings. Hotel Viking is a 95 year old historic landmark. Once inside, I didn't see anything old. The lobby looked very contemporary with plenty of spaces to sit and enjoy. The coffee bar was a nice touch, I was able to grab a latte before starting my day. The hotel is situated in a spot that's convenient to all the restaurants and shopping. Parking is $20 per day but I found it easer to walk down the hill, everyone visiting Newport is fighting for a parking space. I attended a conference for the week, the hotel was able to support two conference rooms. The temperature was consistent throughout the day. I did like the bathroom on the lower level, it was styled very contemporary. I noticed lots of families, some brought their pets? Nice to see a pet friendly hotel. My room was pretty deluxe with a large king bed. It was very comfortable. The shower had hot water all hours of the day. So why the 4 stars? I had a 5 star experience! The people I traveled with said their room had ants as well as the mini fridge was blowing hot air. My military buddy, his son is graduating OCS in a few weeks. I'm going to return to Newport RI and I would love to return and stay overnight.

Yelp
The staff here acts like they are being inconvenienced. Anytime, you ask them for anything. They won't even serve you a drink two minutes before the bar opens at 3 PM. Also, Guard is open. Services absolutely lackluster. All the stuff here lazy except the front desk check-in, which is excellent and housekeeping. For the price you would think you'd get exceptional service. Lazy lazy staff and management

Yelp
This room was so bad I cried for two hours and begged Expedia to help me escape. The hallways also smelled horrible. The hotel eventually agreed to refund the almost $1000 we paid for this dump and I ran as fast as I could to an actual 5 star hotel. Am I a spoiled pretentious princess? Yes. Did this traumatize me into never visiting Newport again? Definitely also yes. I'm grateful they refunded me because if not I would have probably had to report them to my credit card company for fraud.

Yelp
This hotel is disgusting. Check-in was incredibly disorganized. We were told that there were no luggage carts, and still no one offered to help us carry our bags. We managed to find a luggage cart ourselves and took our own bags up. Then while we were napping, a staff member entered our room unannounced and without reason. This was never addressed by the hotel. We then learned that his happened to several members in our group as well. The staff is incompetent and does not know basic privacy regulations. Clearly management doesn't care to train their staff. The room was large but in poor condition. The tub was so dirty. I can't believe I paid to shower here. There essentially was no closet to hang clothes. There was a small rod near the sink with some hangers. The sink was outside of the bathroom. Overall, bad experience and not cheap!

Yelp
Didn't actually get to stay here, although I booked a room over the phone with the front desk. They then called me a half hour after "booking" the room to let me know that their booking desk is actually in Florida and that the room was not actually available. Our room was then cancelled by Hotel Viking management and we were hung out to dry for the night. Please avoid Hotel Viking!

Yelp
This review is for the rooftop located at the hotel Viking. Rooftop was just okay. Not much of a view (parking lot). We ordered a few drinks which were a little weak but okay. Ordered a cheese platter and the cold cuts looked so bad we had to send it back. They did give us a complimentary shot in plastic wine glasses. They had a live band which was nice since it created a nice vibe. Personally I would go to to the Vanderbilt Rooftop instead. Afterwards we had a few drinks at the bar inside the hotel. Better drinks and faster service.

Yelp
This hotel is highly rated on Expedia/google, but not here! And YELP is CORRECT. ONE STAR. The lobby was mayhem and not welcoming. $400 for a miniature room, half the bed was like straw. They didn't have any amenities in room. The bathroom felt like a cement and poorly finished marble cave, with mismatched tarnished furniture throughout. Not to mention that the ONLY parking available (unless you were lucky to get street) was a $45 valet. Insane. To boot, the pool and jacuzzi water was cloudy and dirty looking! No thanks. Oh, and you couldn't even get a free cup of coffee, never mind breakfast. I slept pretty well, But Do NOT stay here !!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great looking historical hotel with very friendly staff and nice decor touches you would expect at a higher end hotel. The gym and pool are excellent if you happen to get stuck inside due to bad weather. The little market downstairs has a nice selection of coffee and breakfast sandwiches. The only cons would be the tiny half sink in our bathroom. It makes getting ready very challenging. The pipes also tend to be loud and the rooms aren't exactly the most soundproof.
google avatar

Yelp
This is NOT a luxury hotel for the price. The front desk and service is great . . . Until you get to your room. The bathroom was disgusting, and when asked to come clean it, you'll have to ask three times for some urgency. The elevator and hallways are dirty and scratched up and the room service is only every other day. Lastly, the valet brings your car up to you as fast as possible whipping around the corner with no respect of your vehicle. Management of this hotel needs to make a few adjustments. We will not be returning

Yelp
Stay somewhere else! Location and customer service can't be beat. Walkable to everything and the people that work there are amazing!!! Everyone was helpful and friendly. We've stayed here many times over the last 10 plus years but this was the last. The hotel is old, outdated and dirty. And not in a cute "old charm" way- it needs to be redone. They also only clean your rooms every two days- which for that price is crazy. See pictures of our $500 per night room (off season). Plus the AC unit is so loud, you think your sleeping next to an airport if you can sleep at all. There are other choices in Newport that I would pick next time for less money.

Yelp
Very unimpressed with this hotel. The outside and lobby are great. The good things ended there. Our room, 217, was dated and cramped. The heat didn't work and our room wouldn't get above 63° despite a call to the front desk and a visit from maintenance. It is an overpriced hotel and I would never stay here again.
google avatar

Angelo C.

Yelp
Everything about this hotel was great! Room was clean and comfortable. Staff were courteous and the amenities like the fire pits were well thought out. The only downside was there was no self parking which I would have liked.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel. Bar is small, limited liquors, Brian excellent bartender. Bathroom tub SLICK BEYOND BELIEF! Coffee maker didn't work, really really hot water. Sink stopper broken. Safe didn't work. Beds and bedding were marvelous! Very $$$$. We were with a tour group so it was nice. Would we go on our own? Nope.

Yelp
Dear Derek, You MUST be kidding. Clearly the catalyst for change was not ignited by reading the many other poor reviews or did I misread them?

Yelp
We really enjoyed our drinks and lobster flatbread on the rooftop! Definitely make reservations!

Yelp
Ambiance: standard hotel environment, nothing impressive, chairs a bit uncomfortable, bathroom would not flush.. heard multiple people bring up to manager... was not addressed Food: lacking quality or inspiration Drinks: remarkably bland... average.. the bar tenders could make a drink but went heavy on the ice Service: lacking authenticity and caring Noise: moderate to normal Recommendation: avoid until the the rooftop bar is open in the summer season Price: overpriced for the quality of drinks and food

Maddy C.

Yelp
STAY AWAY! This "luxury hotel" offers anything but "luxury"! Be prepared for the hidden fees that add a hundred dollars per day to your bill, motel quality rooms and amenities and rude staff. So sad to see a one time jewel profit at the expense of hotel guests. Stay anywhere, but here!
google avatar

Yelp
After finding a filthy shower/bath, sheets with stains on it and crumbs in the nightstand, we decided to call the front desk and they switched our room. The man who came up to "help" move the bags and cot to the new room was rude and seemed mad at us that we had to switch rooms. Instead of apologizing for the dirty room, we were left feeling uncomfortable. When we asked if he could help us move the cot, he responded "your new room is right here"(pointing down the hall)- he must have noticed our appalled facial expressions because then after a few moments he went to get the cot. The high price of this hotel is not worth the very outdated, dirty rooms and unfriendly service. Unfortunately I would not stay here again.

J K.

Yelp
My second day experience was so much better and Brian at the front desk was very helpful. Rooms on the front of the hotel were a bit noisy from the street. Otherwise a good stay. Location 5 stars.

Jill B.

Yelp
Firstly, they put us in a room that was blowing heat in the middle of August. We complained to the front desk and they offered to send a repair person to fix it. Really? Give us a different room. But no, we couldn't sleep because it was sweltering. Windows are sealed shut. Vent propped open with a wooden stick and the louvres were caked with FILTHY GRAY DUST. I'm asthmatic and it was bad. The room was dirty, we found crap on the carpet and a tooth! Ugh. Ceiling had water stains, no bathrobes, closet sized dimly lit bathroom. Forget the tv. New room we moved to next day and it had operable a/c but dimlv lit bathroom with broken tiles. You can't watch the one streaming channel because the internet service was weak as hell. Using their WiFi is pointless. Upon checking out the front desk people refused to make adjustments other than removing a one day resort fee of $45! We stood our ground and they removed one night but it took a lot of arguing. Btw, they charged us $800 for one night while the others were half that price! He of course gave back the $487 a night instead of the $800! They charge a $45 plus tax urban destination fee every day. As a parting gift, we found bugs in our clothing as we were packing to leave.

Yelp
2 Stars because it looks nice from the outside, as braindead, and at times rude staff permeate this landscape on a perfect corner of Touro and Bellvue Avenues in the heart of Newport. I have been there as a guest a couple times and was in their restaurant and lobby bar a few times this past week. It's a historic place, it looks super nice from the outside, the rooms are remarkably shitty, the towels are shabby the soap comes out of dispensers as if you were at a Holiday Inn in Attleboro Mass. That would all be fine if it was 240.00 a night but it's more like 600.00 a night in the summer on the low side. It's outrageous. But my greatest criticism is for their lobby bar. What should be a bustling world class lobby bar is the exact opposite, where slowpoke bartenders with fucked up attitudes make you feel like they are doing you a favor. Lazy, blasè, and unappreciative of their jobs are the descriptions that come to mind. Each visit: Closed at 8 pm. Come on Viking Hotel! Bar was out of limes. huh? What? Bartender in empty bar is such a slowpoke we walked out. Bartender so stupid he couldn't remember to change the TV to Red Sox V Yankees game. Mind you this is all happening in a sold out hotel with hundreds of rooms. Total embarrassment.

Clemency B.

Yelp
While I miss the way the Viking used to be, it was so nice to be back. For our special stay, they gave us the most amazing estate room. Also, when my stomach was not feeling well they made and brought me up French fries and a soda even after their kitchen was closed. Bell staff...watched me lug my bag up the steps without helping- they used to be so kind and efficient. Thank you so much Viking. This was a five star trip. Even though I miss the reading room, it is nice that there is a small cafe with a nice espresso machine right off the lobby.

Maria N.

Yelp
We stayed two nights. The room had a musty smell. The desk and side table of the bed was old and warp. The bathroom also had a bad smell and the shower had mildew. The pool was terribly cloudy looked dirty despite the extremely strong smell of bleach. It was completely deceiving from its advertising The cost does not justify the stay.

Yelp
Had been to the bar before - recommended. Did first dinner during Newport Restaurant week last night with another couple. It is a gorgeous and historic spot. Valet parking. We had reservations for 630 PM on a Friday. Until about 830 PM, there was only one other table of diners... Yikes! Service was decent. Now to the not-so-good... The Rest. week menu was so underwhelming that 3 of us ordered off the regular menu. Both are quite "slim"... We had a round of cocktails - nothing special and priced at the usual $14 - $18. Appetizers - soup = excellent; charcuterie board - good but at $29; the wedge salad was small covered in croutons and a red gem lettuce that did not work; and worst of all the smoked bluefish dip - that my friend said was "fair" and came with a slew of vegetables (photogenic but didn't work. Entrees - flatiron steak - good; "fish and chips" (fluke) - who can't make this dish and it came with a ton of fries; and the 2 of us ordered the Block Island scallops. They were good but sat on a mess of squid ink linguini. Didn't look good and the latter not tasty. We finished with one chocolate dessert. Damages with tip and 2 glasses of chard was $365.... Food 3/5 Service 4/5 Value 2/5 Cleanliness 5/5 Noise 5/5 (virtually dead and quiet until dessert) Decor 4/5 We've been - likely we'll not be back...

Yelp
Oh, Hotel Viking... such potential and opportunity that's been mismanaged for years! I've stayed at Hotel Viking 3 times in the last 4 years and my recent experience finalized what I have said each time I've departed: "ugh, this hotel is so bad!" Shame on me for returning more than once. While the lobby and common areas have been recently stylishly updated (but are already looking worn), the rooms (even the "updated" ones) are pieced together with the cheapest furniture and decor and look like my 4 year old did the painting, caulking, wall-papering. It appears if something breaks or gets ripped in the room the maintenance crew gets a glue stick and calls it a day. Hot water and water pressure is a luxurious treat at this hotel if you're lucky enough to get a room that offers it. Also, forget the "free" internet... it doesn't work on any device. Also, no room service breakfast option or functional coffee machine in the room. For my most recent stay I was lured in with an off-season "special December deal" and figured my kids would love a night away locally at a hotel with a pool and to enjoy Christmastime in Newport. Upon arrival, we declined the $45/day valet (on a Wednesday after Christmas) and just parked on the street. We asked for a luggage cart but told they didn't have any available - no offer to help with my many bags. The staff at the front desk was cold as ice and were clearly irritated with my inquiries about what time the coffee shop opened and if the spa took walk ins. The room we got was clean, but there was half a roll of TP and no extras. When we ventured down to the pool, I was disgusted... it was the cloudiest pool I've ever seen and was in desperate need of shock. There were probably 15 kids in it having fun, which is wonderful, but the hotel should have balanced the chemicals over night. There were also no towels and when we asked the spa for some they said they couldn't provide them... so we left. We had fun exploring Newport and checked out first thing in the morning. I noticed a $45+ tax "Urban Resort Fee" on my folio. When I asked what it was for the gentleman said it was for the valet, newspapers, internet, and use of facilities. I informed him that the internet didn't work, the pool was filthy and had no towels, and that we didn't use the valet (which was NOT free) and asked to speak to a manager. He told me the manager was not available but would call me. Still waiting for that call... I also got spammed with emails asking me to do a satisfaction survey, which I completed in great detail. I re-requested for a manager to contact me, but still waiting for that call and not anticipating I will get it. Do yourself a favor and book elsewhere in Newport. Don't fall for the Hotrl Viking "sales"... they are deceptive and you end up paying just as much as you would have staying at the Marriott which is a far better location.

Yelp
Terrible venue, as I am known to say "Don't bother" small room, terrible mattress, bathroom in dire need of update, clogged shower. All for 400+ a night, sign me up. Do better

Yelp
Hallways to your room are so long, that people with bad feet or knees, will find difficulty walking to their room. Room is tiny and cramped. If you are a man or woman, of rather generous proportions, you are going to have difficulty using the bathroom. If it were any smaller, it would belong in a dollhouse. Two stars instead of one, because the staff was fabulous, and the place is kept spotless.

Jack L.

Yelp
Roof Top bar very limited and bartenders are inexperienced. They only had espresso martinis out of a can. I asked for Frangelica on the rocks and both bartenders did not know what it was and pointed to the vodka's lol. So we went down stairs to get real ones and they were awful. They tasted like paint thinner. We then went back to the roof and the drinks were also awful so we asked for a refund and left.

Yelp
This was a tough one... I would have given this hotel 5 stars if they took as much care of their guest rooms as they did their lobby and restaurant. We stayed in a 2 queen guest room (paid over $230 a night). The bathroom is what really did it for me - HORRIBLE! The toilet and tub seperate - Seriously? With a shower curtain? 5 stars thumbs down. The sink is across the hall.. so weird! The hotel should invest in upgrading their rooms. The staff though.. was incredible! Radu at the Front Desk made the whole trip! We had quite a few hurdles but he really was great at service recovery and making us feel welcome. Everyone greeted us in the morning and the valet team was awesome. Would I come back again? Maybe. But not in that same room. I may splurge for a better room.

Yelp
Very friendly staff who were responsive to issues. Walking distance to most local attractions. However, the rooms needs some attention due to peeling paint, air conditioner regularly going out, chipped tiles in the shower and a damaged sink - especially given the price paid per night.

Yelp
BEWARE!!! Made a reservation in advance for a special family occasion. Despite some poor reviews and a few good ones, I made it anyway because we wanted to stay in a historic Newport hotel. The original architecture is beautiful, but the hotel, itself is showing significant wear and tear in literally all areas as soon as you enter the building. Wallpaper peeling, stained carpeting, scuffed trim work, peeling paint, dinged walls, poor caulking, cracked bathroom tiles, and scratched furniture are to name a few. Our double queen room was noticeably not up to par, and live ants were found on the bathroom sink. We requested another room, but were told none were available. We also had 2 lights not working, which ended up unplugged once we figured out the issue. Male manager was quickly notified and brushed us off and more or less said, there's nothing we can do. Next time we will stay with what we know, like, and is a trusted favorite- Marriott. So, overall it lacked all the luster we hoped for and costed more than what it was worth. Sadly, because of these issues and the insects in the room- I DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Yelp
I had stayed at this Hotel a few times some years back. My husband and I loved it there. We would sit at the bar and drink Espresso Martinis which were out of this world and fairly new to some people as a drink. We told so many people about the great Espresso Martinis at the Viking Hotel so when we were in town my friends and I stopped over and I was floored to see the horrible tiny drink - not in a proper martini glass and learned they come out of a vat! The ones from before had baileys in them and were so delicious. When we saw there was no creamy consistency they suggested adding khalua which we did and ended up having curdled drinks. The cost for the martini was $18 a piece and the khalua shot probably $8-10 more. absolutely embarrassing to have suggested this place for drinks. never again!

Yelp
My husband took me a surprise overnight getaway to RI. When we pulled up I was pleasantly surprised it had so much charm. The lobby was very nice. Check in was quick and smooth. We were running late and had to quickly drop off our bags and head right out . I brought my bathing suit since I had no clue where I was going but saw they had a pool and hot tub as I went through amenities. Couldn't wait to check out what was available when we returned from dinner. When returned we learned that the jacuzzi was not working. We asked if we could still get room service, we were told we could order from bar food menu, I was still a little snackish after our dinner. When we got to the room as soon as I sat on the bed a ton of dust went into the air. This immediately activated my allergies. The room was very small probably the smallest room I've EVER stayed in over 20 years. I tried to wash my face to calm down the allergies but the bathroom was so small I felt claustrophobic, no place to really put anything down . The sink was a half bowl attached to a wall. Now I went online to see the bar menu. I wanted to order some charcuterie that was in the menu. I had my husband call it in since I was now sneezing every other breath. There was so much dust in the room that I was able to capture it on video and watch it coat my water bottle. I decided at this point to take shower to help with my sinus. While I'm in there. Someone arrived not with charcuterie but a random drink. My husband kindly said I did not order this and they admitted we weren't sure what our order was and took a guess. Once we clarified they said they would call us back. I come out expecting charcuterie but I came out to a now sneezing husband who normally does not suffer from allergies like me telling me what happened. We get a phone call saying there won't be no charcuterie it's no longer available on the menu. Now I'm miserable and literally was wheezing from the dust. I call down to the front desk and ask if they have an air purifier and I was told no and they could send up a fan (like WHAT) yes a fan to help. Of course that was not an option so I had to deal with it. So no hot tub jacuzzi, no welcome drink and night filled with dust that literally was insane. When we checked out. I sat on line and all three reps , were super friendly, all asked everyone how was there stay and how were they this morning. When I got up there the lady didn't ask anything but are we charging the card on file and can we email the receipt. That was such a turn off that I didn't even bother to get into how rough the night was and I felt bad because my husband really went out his way to do something different for my birthday. The price he paid was way too much for what we received. A few locals mentioned this place is nice on the outside but not a local recommendation as a place to stay. It was our first time to Newport and Rhode Island but now we know.

Yelp
My husband and I were married at Hotel Viking this past August. To say that they made our dreams come true for our wedding day and 3-day-long wedding celebration with friends and family who traveled from near and far to be with us, would be an understatement. The team at Hotel Viking led by Linda and Christian was absolutely phenomenal. They helped us to swiftly reschedule our wedding for a date that was just 6 weeks after our original date when my husband and I had come down with covid in the same week as our wedding. We didn't know who to turn to or what to do to get our wedding back on the right track, but the team at Hotel Viking was so committed to our plans and moved heaven and earth to make sure our wedding day took place. Within 3 days, our wedding plans were completely back on track and there was not a worry to be had. Prior to our curveball of coming down with covid-19, working with Linda was an absolute dream. Our initial visit to Hotel Viking from New York to learn about the venue for our wedding was over three and a half hours and at the end of the visit, it was clear to us that if we booked our wedding at Hotel Viking, they would be just as invested in making our dreams come true as we already were. The attention to detail, consistency in communication, hospitality, and compassion that went into our wedding is something we will forever be grateful to Linda for. I said to my husband and parents after our wedding that we will have to come back to Newport, solely for the chance to visit with Linda again. Her kindness that was shown to our family was absolutely beautiful. The night before our wedding we welcomed our guests with a cocktail party, we were married in the Kay Chapel, held our cocktail hour and reception in the courtyard and Viking Ballroom, and then sent our guests off with a farewell brunch the morning after our wedding in the Bellevue Ballroom. I must say, you can't sleep on the opportunity to get married in this chapel. It is gorgeous and made our ceremony feel so intimate and sacred. The outdoor cocktail hour is also a must, every area of this hotel is just stunning. Throughout our whole wedding weekend, we were assisted by Linda and Elaine and each interaction we had with them was full of the kind of attentiveness I had not seen before. I remember thinking at the end of my brunch how I was sad our wedding was over but so grateful to have had an experience that was exemplary. We have been married just over two months and just received our wedding photos and video back; we are so grateful we can continue to relive our wedding day through the photos and video because it truly was the experience of a lifetime. The amount of different beautiful places you can take photos at Hotel Viking as well as the surrounding area was just incredible. Touro Park was a great place for bridal party photos and my first look with my husband. If you are looking to hold your wedding in Newport, there should be no doubt in your mind about holding it at Hotel Viking. You are met with kindness and hospitality as soon as you pull into the gorgeous cobblestone driveway and you truly are made to feel at home. The three nights I spent in Newport was all spent staying at Hotel Viking. I am so glad that I did that to be able to really spend all of my time at the hotel because I was offered the best service. We were able to use an event room for bridal prep, my bridal suite was ready much earlier than expected for bridal photos and any area of the hotel that we utilized was in pristine condition. We were married in Newport because we wanted to be married in a beautiful town that our guests would enjoy being in while they could celebrate with us. Little did we know, we would find a place that was so special to us and will forever be a part of our hearts. Thank you, Linda and Hotel Viking! You made our dreams come true!!!

Yelp
Very disappointing. We drove up with a trailer and asked where we should park. The doorman just started at us. Our room was down lots of corridors and once inside it's as if someone stole all the art work as all the walls are bare. Not sure why they waisted money on grey wallpaper. If they were going to the expense of wallpaper there are so many wonderful options. No where with a mirror for me to sit and do my makeup. No coffee maker or fridge in the room. All our friends that stayed also agreed that the pillows are like bricks. We needed a taxi and the doorman told us to ask the front desk. The front desk staff picked up a book and were looking through it! Such a waist of our time. We ended up getting our own Uber! This is definitely not a luxury hotel.

Yelp
Skip this hotel. The rooms are worn down and the front of the house is below par. Our mattresses were old and worn out, the shower was clogged, the toilet broke twice. All in a one night stay. The hallways had garbage in the hallway (food wrappers) that never got picked up by staff. The staff is overworked (just a guess) so they are all negative and less than helpful. This includes the front desk, the parking valets and the bartender in the lobby. We were happy to check out.

Yelp
Looks beautiful from the outside. Not so much on the inside... Their website touts a "spectacular 6.2 million dollar renovation." Based on the conditions of my room and some of the common areas, I shudder to think what it was like before the 6.2 million dollar renovation. I wonder, did they only spend that money on the lobby and exterior? The front desk staff was friendly enough, however when I inquired about Uber/ taxi services, the employee handed me a business card for a local driver. Now, this is fine, and appreciated, however when I consider that this hotel cost 430$ for one night (and that was a discounted rate), I think it would've been appropriate for the employee to offer to schedule the driver for me. But he was young so I figured maybe he just hadn't worked in an upscale service industry role before. No big deal. The front door employees were also friendly, but didn't even attempt to open the door for me (or anyone else for that matter). Again, not a huge deal but at these prices at a so-called "upscale" hotel I'd expect the doormen to do the thing they're paid to do- mainly OPEN THE DOOR for the customers. The elevator to our room had holes and carvings (people's initials and scratches) in the wood paneling, stains on the carpet, and smelled of mildew. In fact the hallways leading to the guest rooms also smelled of mildew. The fluorescent lighting in the hallways leading to the rooms is horrendous and lends itself to a vibe reminiscent of the Shining. The fluorescent lights in the bathroom were again not only garish but also they were flickering. The bathroom had significant soap scum build up on the bathtub fixture, rust on the tub drain, dirty/moldy tile grout, and the sink was clogged causing the sink basin to fill up quickly. The ceiling in the entryway of the room is a drop ceiling which is tacky and gross anyway, but to add insult to injury there was a huge water stain on one of the ceiling tiles. No coffee maker in the room, no bottled water, no mini bar. No small pad of paper or pen. No local brochures or regional information. Even if this is due to "Covid precautions," it would be nice if the website or the staff let me know that there would be nothing in the room so I could plan accordingly. There was literally nothing that elevated this place from a holiday inn or Hampton inn, except the ornate lobby and expensive price tag. At least the holiday inn has coffee available. The location is nice and an easy walk to many shops and restaurants. The outdoor spaces have lovely gardens. I would never stay here again.

Yelp
The hotel looks lovely on the exterior and in the lobby but that's about it. The rooms are disappointing! They need to be remodeled or at least deep cleaned. We were greeted by ants in the bathroom. The bedding was stained, the walls were dirty, the shower is gross, the bed squeaks, and we could hear the guests upstairs. Definitely not worth $600+ per night!! It should be a 2.5 star hotel.

Yelp
My wife and I did a weeklong trip along the coastline of RI and Connecticut. Our most anticipated stay, though, was the Hotel Viking in Newport. The staff were nice and the property looks so royal and bold. Turns out the room we rented for $250/night was for a queen bed that filled up most of the floor space, no microwave and no refrigerator. The hot water sink faucet leaked and half of one of the casters on the bathroom vanity was broken, remedied by a wadded up paper towel. There are free bottles of water available at the front desk any time they're available. There's a breakfast sandwich/wrap coffee shop on the 1st floor that was good. The hotel's breakfast was good too. Amenity fees are $35/day. After prepaying for two nights, the money we owed at checkout was $193. This was for one night of valet parking, amenity fees, breakfast one morning and a two drinks on the rooftop. The rooftop, incidentally, leaves some of not much to be desired. The valet program is elective, but that isn't necessarily translated that way. We paid $40 for valet parking the first night. If that wasn't motivation enough to find our own parking the next night, waiting for the valet to bring our car only to have to wait longer because they'd brought us someone else's the first time caused us to locate free street parking on Catherine Street for the second night. Catherine Street's free parking starts 90 feet off of Bellvue. The location of the hotel is good and within walking distance of a lot of attractions, including the Cliff Walk (two ways to get there from the Viking, but I'd suggest Bellvue to Narragansett.

Yelp
The rooms at the hotel leave alot to be desired. My wife and I stayed in a suite ( yes a suite) The bathroom is smaller than any closet I have in my house. There is no coffee machine in the room ( which can be found in even the cheapest motels). There is a small dorm size fridge but that is the end of the amenities. The room is OK but again for a suite it is small. I'm fearful what a regular room looks like in this hotel. In the bathroom was only two towels and no wash cloths. Attached is a pic of just how small the bathroom was in our suite( again this is supposed to be a suite). As you can see in this oic you can do your business and was your hands at the same time.

Yelp
I've only been to Newport once and we stayed at the NYYC Harbor Court property for the night. We are back for the StFYC Commodore Cruise (Newport to Nantucket). We have never stayed in town, are here for 4 nights and wanted to stay in town. Hotel Viking looked great so we booked it. Old school arrival. Very majestic building. Lobby was unimpressive (a bit of a let down) but the staff at the front desk were fantastic, friendly and helpful. The rooms are not huge, but we actually had a big room with fireplace - in the old tower. Very nice with view of water way off in the distance. We are staying one night now and three nights after our cruise. They were kind enough to hold luggage for us while we went out in the cruise. Lookin forward to returning next week after the cruise! If you want old school authentic with great service, highly recommend Hotel Viking.

Yelp
Visited Rhode Island for my first time for a wedding. My fiancé booked through the wedding block/we didn't look at other hotels so I don't have anything to compare this to but a few issues. Location was great/we walked all over. No parking lot, if you can find street parking that's great.. we ended up doing valet. Staff was nice - no issues with them. Our room was very small, add in our bags and it felt very tight. The bathroom is right there and has an opaque ish covering going down the middle, if you stand in the right spots you can see the silhouette of someone inside. The light comes through and can definitely wake someone up since the bed is right there. The bathroom did not feel private/The bathroom was small, room to stand in front of the sink but then the toilet is right behind you and the sink was tiny. The water pressure in the shower would go out and several times half of the shower head no longer had water flowing through it for a few seconds. The AC was loud.

Yelp
Update: unfortunately our check out experience skewed my review below to be more negative. This was originally 5 star. Our stay was still very pleasant, but upon checkout we were told parking was double as expensive as was listed on Expedia (because it was the "on" season...beginning of April). On top of this we were charged a random 30 dollars for drinks the day before at the hotel bar we never had. Management refused to refund us the cost which was surprising considering the hospitality we received the rest of the time. Old review below: Fantastic experience here so far. Here for my mom and girlfriend's birthday weekend. The staff from the bell hops to the front desk have all been very friendly and accommodating. Our room and bed are extremely comfortable and quiet, as well as receiving chocolate covered strawberries and a birthday card upon arrival. Free shuttle service around the nearby area, complimentary bikes, beautiful pool and hot tub. Great location, and personalized service a text away. Will be

Yelp
This review is solely for the bar experience. A girlfriend and myself visited on 12/28 late afternoon for an appetizer and beverage. The flatbread was delicious but your bartenders need MAJOR training in hospitality. The female with the incredibly wrinkled white shirt (it was seriously that distracting) was not friendly, never said hello and was so uninterested in everything it was sad. Just a smile and a "hi welcome Happy Holidays" would have gone a long way. The male wasnt much better. Did they do their jobs? I guess, but it doesnt take much to just be nice and welcoming in a world of hospitality. We are locals, not tourists and I wont be returning just for the fact of the service of these bartenders.
