A Mixed Stay: Nostalgic Charm Let Down by Inconsistent Service
Our experience at this hotel was a mix of good and not-so-good. While it has some charming elements and good facilities, it falls short in key areas like service and food, which one would expect at this price point.
Reception & Welcome: 5/10
The greeting at reception was functional but lacked warmth; there was no mention of the hotel's facilities or any information about the surrounding area. The reception area itself is a time capsule, very traditional and nostalgic, which reminded me of family holidays in the 90s. While charming, the overall first impression was underwhelming.
The Room: 6.5/10
The definite highlight of our room was the balcony with its fantastic sea view. The room itself is dated but has been updated with some modern conveniences like USB charging points and a free digital safe. The bathroom, though small and featuring a shower-over-bath, had a vintage marble sink area that had a certain charm. However, the room was quite small, and upon entry, there was a noticeable musty odour, which thankfully dissipated after the first day. The air conditioning worked well and there was plenty of storage. For the price, we expected more, and the room size was a let-down; without the balcony, it would have felt extremely claustrophobic. Also, there is no tea or coffee making facilities in the room or a clothes drying utility to dry towels and clothes on the balcony which encourages guests not to reuse towels. A pity.
Breakfast: 6/10
The breakfast buffet is a hectic and crowded affair. Our first morning began with a rude attendant who seemed quite put out at having to show us to a table. For a 4-star hotel, the buffet was below average. The orange juice was poor, the coffee was just okay, and the queues for omelettes were consistently long. The fruit selection was adequate, but yoghurt was only available in pre-packaged tubs. My advice would be to sit outside, as the noise level in the main dining hall is overwhelming.
Gym & Spa Facilities: 7/10
The gym was small but decent enough for a hotel. Some of the weights machines are in need of replacement, as the worn handles left black stains on my hands. When I visited at 8:30 am, the water cooler was empty and the air conditioning was off. The area also includes a sauna, steam room, and an indoor pool. Staff service here was inconsistent; some were very pleasant, while others were completely engrossed in their smartphones.
Pools & Bar
The hotel has three nice outdoor pools and a spacious sun lounge area with a poolside bar. However, be prepared for high prices at the bar (€14 for a club sandwich), and we found the staff there to be quite brusque.
Entertainment 2/10
The hotel bar is left vacant most of the time and you are left waiting for service with other surprised guests. When the unapologetic service does eventually arrive, it is not with a smile or any sort of charm.
The pool table is ancient with inconsistent pockets and a major roll on the table towards the poor cushions. Its very frustrating to play on. 7.50 per hour.
There is no entertainment or music in the hotel in the evening time which was very disappointing.
Overall: 5/10
This hotel has potential, but it's let down by inconsistent service and a feeling that it hasn't quite kept pace with modern 4-star standards. A decent stay, but not one we would rush to repeat or recommend to others.
