Have you ever stayed somewhere that looks upmarket at first glance, only to find the details don’t quite match the polish? That was my impression of Hotel Villa Fontaine – Shiodome.
The lobby is modern and sleek, the service professional, and the location convenient for walking over to Ginza or catching a train. On the surface, it checks all the boxes for a comfortable and upmarket Tokyo stay. The room itself was fine—clean, quiet, and reasonably sized by Japanese standards.
But the bathroom told a different story. Stepping inside felt like stepping into a small RV restroom, right down to the paneling and the creaky floor. Functional, yes, but oddly out of place in a hotel that otherwise carries an upmarket feel.
Ginza, just a short walk away, didn’t quite charm me either. While often described as high-end, I found parts of it a bit grimy and sleazy, especially compared to the energy of Shibuya. That’s not the hotel’s fault, of course, but it colored the experience of the neighborhood.
Hotel Villa Fontaine delivers on convenience and comfort, but the contrast between its polished exterior and the oddly dated bathroom is hard to ignore.
Sometimes it’s the small details that leave the biggest impression. Bathroom, notwithstanding, a stay here should be considered if you need to crash in Ginza.
