Hotel Villa La Principessa, a Design Boutique Hotel Lucca, Italy

"Set in a private park, Villa La Principessa is an elegant hotel with a relaxing pool area. Located in the hills around Lucca, it has a Tuscan restaurant and traditionally-furnished rooms. This 13th-century manor house was once the home of the Duke of Lucca. Rooms come with air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a minibar, while some have wood-beamed ceilings and luxurious wallpaper. Attentive staff provide an international buffet breakfast each morning, served on the terrace in fine weather. Guests enjoy discounted rates at partner restaurants nearby. La Principessa is 5 km from the centre of Lucca. Pisa is a 20-minute drive away, and parking is free at the hotel." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

We have stayed at Hotel Villa La Principessa for 3 weeks with our guests and we have had the best time. We enjoyed the meeting room which we used for our craft workshops and the pool area. We thought the service by the staff was very good. The bedrooms were very clean and the gardens were always kept clean. The food is very authentic and we have had lunch outside when it was warm enough. They have bedrooms with walk-in showers for guests who have not good mobility. They also allow dogs to stay and the house keeping has very good hovers to clean the rooms. Our dog has white hair and the carpet was royal blue but the housekeeping cleaned the carpet very well. There is free on-side parking and the location is perfect. Just 10 minutes by car outside of Lucca. The reception team has helped us to book taxi's and more. The hotel has a very charming style and we will be back next year in May. Thank you very much, Nadine and Mark

This hotel really was a lucky find. We needed something fairly close to Lucca for a 4 night stay. The hotel the rooms and the gardens are quite amazing. The room was an enormous king with attached sitting area. Whilst the menu for lunch and dinner were a little limited, what was served up was delicious. Staff in reception and dining/bar were really friendly and attentive. Had to go search a couple of times for bar staff this all added to the quirky nature of the hotel. Super stay and close to Lucca/ Pisa and Florence.

We stayed for a week on a group tour so I didn't choose this hotel myself. We would have preferred to stay right in Lucca, which is a taxi or bus ride away. Unfortunately it's not walkable as there's a busy road with no pavement.|However, it is a beautiful old property with lots of character and charm. It's quiet and restful. I slept the best I have in months! |The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and staying for so long meant that they got to know you.|We had dinner and breakfast outside on the terrace, which was a lovely setting but the cicadas were very loud at times!|The dinner menu wasn't changed every day but the food was always delicious. The breakfast buffet was adequate but I personally would have liked the cakes and pastries to have been covered and protected from the flies.|The rooms were quirky but well appointed. The only issue for me was no full length mirror but that's being picky as there was a wall mirror.|If you use the local bus bear in mind that they have a 'tap on, tap off' system so you need to use a card. Make sure each individual has their own card too!|Lucca is a great base to explore from and a lovely city.

My stay at Villa Principessa in Lucca, Tuscany, was nothing short of delightful. This hotel exudes an authentic feeling with its historical look and beautifully manicured grounds, making it the perfect retreat for those looking to immerse themselves in the charm of Tuscany. The pool is an excellent bonus as it was a perfect place to relax after a long day of sight seeing. The on-site restaurant serves classic Tuscan cuisine, adding to the overall authentic experience. Each meal was a culinary delight, showcasing the rich flavors and traditions of the region. The service at Villa Principessa was outstanding. The staff were incredibly attentive and went above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Their warmth and professionalism truly made a difference. The rooms were spacious and well-appointed, providing a perfect blend of comfort and historical elegance. The mattress was a little too hard for my liking but that is a personal choice. Waking up to the serene views of the well-maintained gardens was a highlight. Overall, Villa Principessa offers an exceptional experience with its beautiful grounds, excellent dining, and top-notch service. It’s a perfect choice for anyone looking to experience the best of Tuscany.

To start, the pictures online are completely misleading and nothing like the actual condition of the hotel. You can see the real state of the room in the photos I’ve uploaded alongside this review (from November 2024) — it’s a huge contrast and feels very deceptive. The room had an incredibly bad smell, by far the worst I’ve ever experienced in any accommodation. It was clear the hotel was trying to mask the odor of what seemed like a rotting building with overpowering scented sticks and large boxes of chemicals, which only made it worse (see pictures). For the price of 207 EUR per night, this was a complete rip-off. The room was dirty, with visible dirt and dust in corners, and the bathroom fixtures were rusty and worn out. The bed was sagging and uncomfortable, showing clear signs of being well past its prime. The staff, including the hotel manager, was well aware of these issues. They apologized and even offered a refund. However, after we left, they completely ignored our refund request, showing a lack of professionalism and follow-through. Overall, this so called "villa" was a massive disappointment. I would not recommend staying here—save your money and find somewhere else that offers better quality for the price.

First off I highly recommend getting a car to stay at this hotel. It made our stay so much easier. This hotel is exactly what we thought of when we thought “Tuscany.” We are a family of 3 and the room was very spacious, and unique. The beds and pillows were comfortable. The room and bathroom were very clean and the shower was hot. The room came with its own A/C. And a nice view into the backyard. The staff was very polite and professional. I had asked them to leave a happy birthday note for our daughter and they surprised us with a little wrapped gift for her instead! She loved it. The restaurant at the hotel has Excellent food! So delicious we ate their twice (the menu changed by day). The breakfast they offer in the morning is abundant! They had 4 different types of juice, various pastries, fresh fruit (pears, plums, bananas, grapes, and apples) pancakes, eggs, sausages, cereal, oatmeal, toast with multiple spreads.
