Villa Maria Cristina Boutique Hotel (Guanajuato, Mexico) 8 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The scenic old town of Guanajuato is noted mainly for having been an old mining town (back when mining towns were picturesque) as well as the birthplace of the painter Diego Rivera. So it’s a little bit unexpected to find that it’s got a hotel of the quality of the Villa Maria Cristina — a fine, intimate little luxury hotel, in a gorgeous old building with piles of character." - Tablet Hotels

The hotel location is a bit of a walk to the center but an enjoyable one through a nice neighborhood with local shops to enjoy along the way (coffee, pan dulce, restaurants, etc). The room was spacious and comfortable. The staff was friendly but not the most attentive as they were busy accommodating a large wedding party during a portion of our stay. We checked in later in the evening and had high hopes for a good dinner at the hotel restaurant. Unfortunately, the food was not good (my husband had pasta and I had shrimp), neither was good and we would not recommend eating there. Overall I would recommend this hotel for a nice stay in Guanajuato if you plan to use the amenities and enjoy a comfortable spacious room.

This place is magnificent. Is totally beautiful. The service is perfect. The rooms are iconic|The food is delicious. Complimentary toiletries. Full BR with bathrobes etc. Softest linens.|The only little hiccup is the amount of water wasted to get hot water in the shower.|Do not miss this place

Loud noise from party upstairs! Stayed in this hotel 8/29-9/1/2025, not sure about their policy of inviting non-hotel guests to the room to party. We hear loud noises from upstairs on 8/30 at 10:30pm. We can clearly hear and feel the foot steps upstairs, floor was shaking like moving furnitures, loud voices talking from at least 2+ females and 1 male. The next morning we saw them checked out, they were a family of 3: husband, wife and a child. We are pretty sure there were more adults than that and obviously more female adults. We tolerated the noise for an hour then talked to the front desk at 11:30 pm, front desk were not able to verify how many people were in the room because the male tenant opened the door slightly, which doesn’t make any sense. I don’t understand that I payed the price wanted to rest and sleep, however if we invite friends to our room to party, how does this hotel work? It doesn’t make sense, It’s a party house not somewhere to rest!

⸻ This hotel is truly in a class of its own. While it may not be part of a luxury hotel chain, it stands tall among the world’s most exquisite luxury hotels. From the moment you step inside, you are mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty of the place. It is a masterful blend of pastel tones, vibrant tiles, intricate murals, stunning paintings, lush exotic plants, and elegant woodwork. Our junior suite was exceptionally spacious, designed to soothe the senses without the clutter of unnecessary or overly loud Art Deco pieces—something we experienced at a hotel in San Miguel de Allende just days earlier and did not enjoy. The hotel boasts a full spa with an indoor heated swimming pool, an outdoor pool, two outdoor jacuzzis, another jacuzzi in the spa, and yet another in the suite. The restaurant’s cuisine rivals that of a Michelin-starred establishment, offering an exceptional dining experience. The owner’s passion and artistic vision are evident in every detail, from the architecture to the décor, with an extraordinary level of thought and care. Words alone cannot fully capture the harmony and beauty of this place, so I am sharing several photos to illustrate my point. As for the staff, the highest praise goes to the captain of the ship, Mr. Klaus Lapp. His leadership and dedication are reflected in the impeccable service provided by his well-trained team, creating an exceptionally warm and welcoming atmosphere. While every staff member we encountered left a positive impression, a few stood out: Pablo, Iván Mondial, and Juliana at reception; Alexis, who gave us a wonderful tour of the property; and Chef Patrick, who crafted some truly outstanding dishes. Klaus went above and beyond to accommodate our requests. He proactively provided us with an electric kettle for tea and personally went to the bank to exchange currency for us—at an exceptional rate unavailable elsewhere. In the suite, every detail reflected the highest standards of luxury: plush linens, soft towels, and perfect pillows. The shower was so exquisite that my wife remarked she didn’t want to step out of it. This hotel is a masterpiece of elegance and hospitality, an experience we will cherish and highly recommend.

We had an incredible stay at the Hotel Villa Maria Cristina in Guanajuato. This beautiful property is tucked away in the historic and vibrant Presa neighborhood, surrounded by, charming shops, great restaurants and a beautiful shady park all within walking distance. It’s also just a quick cab ride or a scenic walk to Plaza de la Paz, making it both peaceful and conveniently located.||From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel truly welcomed. The hotel manager personally introduced himself and checked in on our experience, which was a lovely touch. Service throughout our stay was excellent we didn’t want for a thing. Our suite was spacious with a comfortable sitting area, cozy beds, and a luxurious bathroom featuring a jetted tub and separate shower. Housekeeping refreshed our room daily and even replenished our water multiple times a day.||The balcony offered a stunning view, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel was both elegant and tranquil. We also loved the swimming pool and couldn’t recommend the spa enough—it’s absolutely divine.||Without a doubt, we’d stay here again. Villa Maria Cristina is a true gem in Guanajuato! ||

We stayed here for 3 nights. This hotel is lovely. It's about a 20 min. walk into town, which was fine with us. The town can be quite hectic and the walk was easy. There are some good restaurants within a 5-10 min. walk, as well as the hotel restaurant which is quite good. It's a beautiful hotel with lots of charm, and the surroundings and grounds are gorgeous. The staff are all awesome!||||We picked this hotel as it had a pool and after being in San Miguel for 4 nights, we wanted some chill time by the pool. The day we got there, we saw there was some construction going on around the pool. It looks like they are putting a new composite deck on one side that I assume will house the loungers. By the time we went out to the pool, the work had stopped and I can only assume it was because there was a meeting taking place on the terrace directly behind/above the pool. The next day we went out to explore for a while, and came back for a little pool time, which was lovely. There was another meeting taking place that day as well. The next day, was our planned pool day. The construction workers were back early morning. It was loud with drilling and cutting with an electric saw, etc. We talked to the front desk and they advised it would be going on all day as the workers come from further away and they would be staying for the entire day. We had no notice of this. They should have sent us some form of communication prior to coming to advise us of this work being done while we were there. Minimum, they should have let us know when we checked in and we could have planned our full pool day for the previous day. We did go out by the pool the morning we were leaving for an hour and half, and while they were still working, it was a little bit quieter and we could at least stay there and enjoy the last couple of hours. Again, we picked this hotel because of the pool, so it was very disappointing.||||I would have given it five stars hands down if it wasn't for this one issue. Had we come the following week, it would have been the perfect review.

Yelp
Just arrived for two nights at the Villa Maria-Cristina and its beauty is only surpassed by the warm welcome we received after we were rescued when our rental car in Leon ran out of gas en route to Guanajuato. I've always wanted to visit this UNESCO heritage colonial city and after a uneventful but delayed flight, we were guided to this Villa before we join 7 more friends at the Ex Hacienda la Trinidad. We were treated to a spectacular dinner. Dinner at the Villa Maria Cristina of salmon on tortilla's, tuna on toast, Guacamole with cured beef, pork rind and tortilla chips, Venezuelan arapas with Chicken and avocado; Durado fish with smashed potatoes & asparagus; mahi mahi with mango salsa on Mexican cheese risotto w/edible flowers washed down with a perfect half salt half chili margarita on the rocks and my room for two nights. I wandered through this maze like home with more ups and down stairs than an Escher etching. Stunning from every angle.

Yelp
In Guanajuato, I think this is probably the best place to stay if you need some (relative) peace and quiet after a day trekking around this busy city. It's an absolutely stunning property (once you get past the lackluster reception area) and it's up the hill, about a 20-25 min walk from the historic center of town. If you don't like to walk or you're averse to walking uphill (or taking taxis), this is not the place for you. It has a great, beautifully heated outdoor pool, as well as a geothermal pool and hot tub in the spa area (open to all guests). We loved using both. The on-site restaurant is good, but so expensive compared to all the other nice restaurants in town. Like, a glass of apple juice was $6 USD. (In comparison, we went down the street and had a huge, amazing omelette AND a latte for $6.) That said, there are some downsides. Our room was large, with a living room area and bedroom area, but it didn't feel warm and cozy (though the bed was comfortable). It wasn't a room in which we really wanted to hang out. The shower wasn't great, and the toilet leaked--which of course they came and fixed, but it was a bit of a pain. We tried to use the hot tub, and apparently, they don't leave it on and heated all day / evening, so when we arrived it was cold. We had to call someone to turn it on, and they said it would be hot "in a few hours." But would I stay there again? Probably! If the price was right. We got a good deal, so that made us happy. We also discovered that there are some fantastic restaurants at the top of the hill, a short walk from the hotel, so it turned out to be more convenient of a location than we thought.

Yelp
The hotel grounds are beautiful. Beautiful architecture and a wonderful setting for those of us who are still masking indoors and appreciate being able to relax at the hotel without wearing a mask since it's all open air. The staff is wonderful--very friendly and attentive. They allowed us to check in early and check out late, which was an enormous gift because our flight times weren't conducive to traditional check in and check out times. Every person on the staff we interacted with was lovely and eager to help. The restaurant is overpriced, but they care about providing good service and you can really feel that. I knocked off one star because the rooms, while charming, leave a lot to be desired. Without any rugs, the wood floor and wood furniture feel cold. Our room was large but never felt cozy, so we spent very little time there. One good thing about the room--the bed was very comfortable. I'm not sure if there is a dog shelter nearby, but we heard a lot of dog barking, so make sure to pack your ear plugs (solved the problem for us). They also have a thermal pool and spa which was a lovely way to start our days! The chaise lounge chairs at the thermal pool and at the outdoor pool are not comfortable for long periods of time. However, the cushioned lounge chairs near the outdoor jacuzzi are wonderful. (That jacuzzi wasn't heated properly, however, when we wanted to use it.) Definitely some room for improvement but overall I was happy with the experience.

Yelp
Great place! Old world charm. Amazing facility. Friendly staff. Nice pool outside w another one underground. Great spa also. We got massages when we arrived. A pleasant walk to the historic district but lots of taxis avail too. We don't speak Spanish but managed - google translate helped. Will come back again.

Yelp
The room was very large, chocolates were left each night, the continental breakfast that comes with the room was amazing, pool is great.

Yelp
If you want an incredibly relaxing & luxurious spa experience after walking for several days in Guanajuato, go here. The property is amazing, however we didn't get a chance to stay here. We just wanted a few hours to relax before continuing to explore the city. The massage experience for my wife and I wee amazing. After the massage, we got to enjoy the indoor spa facilities including pool, spa, steam & sauna. We got robes, slippers and lockers in the changing room during our visit. The experience was worth it. See the property grounds in the attached photos. We will stay here for sure next time.

Yelp
This review is only for the spa as we were not hotel guests only spa guests. The property was lovely, exactly what you would expect from a R&C property. We have stayed at several and have gone to luxury spas all over the world. We had an absurdly long week of Spanish intensive and just wanted a day to relax. I contacted the hotel about the spa and their services. I was sent a pdf of available services. I expected them to be expensive because it's a 5 star resort. To compare a massage is $1500 pesos. A good massage can be had at a day spa in Mexico for as little as $250 up to $800. So this was twice what a more expensive massage would run you elsewhere. We were splurging for the luxury spa experience. When I went to make the appointments I was informed as non-hotel guests we would be charged an additional $750 pesos for use of the facilities including jacuzzi, barely heated pool, and sauna (wet and dry). Ok, I have never been charged extra for facility use with a paid service at a luxury spa. We had a couples stone massage. The staff was nice and attentive. It was good massage but not exceptional (remember we are paying exceptional prices), the massage should be exceptional. No essential oils, just massage oil. We decided to pay for use of the facility. The spa is nice but it's small. There was no calming music playing. A lot of staff comes through the spa, including maintenance and housekeeping people. Not the chill out we had hoped for. It turns out the jacuzzi is on the roof 3 floors up. The view is lovely but it is awkward walking through the hotel. The jacuzzi itself is not particularly clean, it could use a through cleaning. The steam room is actually in the shower in the bathroom, also awkward. The sauna was as expected. Pool also could have been cleaner, there was a fairly large ball of hair in the bottom, it is heated but not warm. We were offered slippers. Towels and water were readily available. We were not offered robes or lockers. We had to keep our bags with us, also awkward. When we went to pay. It turns out the facility charge was an additional $750 pesos per person so that was an additional $1500 pesos to use some of the facilities (no lockers, no robes). We paid a premium yet it felt like they were nickeling and diming the whole experience, not exactly getting what you pay for. A lot of things about the set up is awkward and not what you would expect from a place of this caliber. It was an ok experience but not one we would repeat.
