12 Secluded Bungalows in Mexico for Your Next Beach Vacation

"Villas Flamingos is a hotel located on one of the most famously mellow destinations in the Yucatan with a 26-mile long beach. There are no cars allowed on the Isla Holbox and you can only get there by ferry. Located on the far end of the beach, in the Yum-Balam Nature Reserve, you'll find nothing but peace and quiet here, especially if you opt to stay in one of the hotel's gorgeous bungalows. Both garden-facing and ocean-view bungalows come with their own terrace plus an outdoor shower and indoor jacuzzi or plunge pool that you'll have all to yourself. However, the sky bungalows are also a strong option for honeymooners, thanks to the hammock and jacuzzi room on the top floor, where you can have a soak or a hang while looking out at the ocean." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Holbox is absolutely beautiful, and we had a wonderful stay at Villa Flamingos. Our room had a natural, serene vibe that made it feel like a private villa. We stayed in the Bungalow Mangle, which features a jacuzzi on the upper level! The hotel went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. I booked both the cocktail and yoga classes through the concierge, and they were fantastic. Ivan, the director, was incredibly friendly and helpful. He took the time to introduce all the activities available and even went out of his way to help when my phone ran out of battery. The margaritas were excellent, and the whole atmosphere was charming and relaxing. The beachfront views and the long sandbar made it the most stunning beach I’ve ever visited.

Loved this hotel except the still water you have to walk through to get to ocean I think that’s why we were eaten alive by no seeums/mosquitos. Great breakfast and a one hour happy hour every day. The adults only pools are cool and very relaxing. Best sunsets ! Easy walk to pier to go on excursions

Room was excellent, daily second fresh towels delivered to your room. Beautiful hotel and awesome shower pressure, lounge chairs and swings. Hotel staff is very helpful and attentive. Enjoyed the more silent vibes. Breakfast included has great options and service is amazing. Town center is too far to walk. You’ll always need a taxi. Many only take cash, just be prepared. The ride is short but comes out to $20. Only true downside is the brackish water to walk through to get to the ocean. It’s slimy and dirty looking. If they could build a bridge that would help. Due to the water standing there and behind the hotel it breeds massive amounts of mosquitos and the hotel doesn’t sell bug spray. Major oversight and they should warn customers. We have too many bites to count!

Holbox is so beautiful and we had a lovely time at Flamingos. The small boutique rooms were darling and the hotel did everything to help our stay be wonderful. We booked excursions through the concierge and had no trouble having the reception call golf cart taxis to come and take us anywhere. Their restaurant is great and had live music at night. The entire place was so cute and relaxing. The beachfront views and long sandbar is the best beach Ive ever been to.

We booked this hotel for two nights but had to leave within a few hours due to an extremely distressing and unacceptable experience. Shortly after arriving, a wild animal entered our room through the private pool area and even got onto the bed. It was deeply unsettling. When we reported it, the staff showed no urgency, didn’t seem to care, and offered only vague reassurances. A few hours later, we returned to find the pool door left wide open again, allowing mosquitoes in and raising more safety concerns. When we went back to reception, the staff were completely apathetic. They didn’t want to listen, never once apologised, and showed zero empathy or accountability for the situation. It was clear they had no interest in helping us feel safe or supported. Only after we became visibly distressed did they offer another room, but by then we no longer felt comfortable staying. On top of that, the property appeared to have a serious flea problem - we were badly bitten anytime we sat down, and the staff had no deterrents or suggestions when asked. There was nowhere where we could escape the fleas- baring in mind we didn’t have this issue in other hotels we stayed on the island. This was a deeply disappointing and stressful experience. We did not stay the night, use any amenities, or receive anything close to what was advertised. We were also not offered any form of compensation. I strongly advise others to avoid this property, and I hope both the hotel and Booking.com take this complaint seriously.

Great location towards the end of the beach, so although further away from town, it was still only a 20min stroll along the beach "road" to reach shops, cafes and restaurants. It also meant that the hotel directly fronts onto the main beach, separated from general public by a low wall and a wade through shallow water onto the sandbar. Other hotels closer to town had the "road" (albeit a quiet, sandy lane) between hotel grounds and beach with their loungers having less privacy from the general public on the beach.|There were plenty of loungers, although the hotel could do more to stop people "reserving" them with towels only to not use them for hours. |Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable with a large patio overlooking the adult pool area. It had a double chaise longue plus 2 chairs for relaxing in the shade. The shower was huge, although the trendy branch shower head arrangement was more style than substance. A ceiling fan would have been nice as air-conditioning overnight could be a bit too much for us.|Food at breakfast, lunch and dinner was good quality and although pricier than in some restaurants in town, it didn't feel overpriced. It would have been nice if the bar was open at night, but maybe it's not busy enough to justify that and they were happy for people to have drinks only in the restaurant when we were there.|Staff were friendly and helpful, although the restaurant was understaffed at breakfast leading to long waits sometimes. Not the staff's fault, but something for the management to consider.|We would score 4.5 if we could and will definitely return.

Everything from the room to the restaurant was perfect. Beautiful property. We considered this decision to stay our best in holbox. We were centrally located and away from the noise of the center. Property has bikes and paddle boards you could use. Right in front of sandbar. Stayed for our honeymoon and they added champagne and cake at check in. Nice touch. Friendly places. Highly recommend

We were sadly disappointed with our stay at Villas Flamingos in Holbox, MX. While the property is beautiful and offers great access to the most desirable sandbar on the island, there is not enough staff to support guests and so the experience leaves you with great disappointment. Rooms We stayed in one of the Vista Mar rooms and while the website says the occupancy was a max of 2 people, we found it strange that our room included not only a king bed but also bunk beds. The bunk beds took up quite a bit of space in the room and made it awkward to access the closet space. It was also obvious that these beds did not belong in the room as there were 2 lights hanging from the ceiling that were laying on the top bunk. The room was on the first floor and did offer a nice view of the ocean and easy accessibility. Property Maintenance While in the middle of taking a shower one evening, unfortunately the water supply was shut off. We called to have someone look into the issue and they said they would call back. While no one ever contacted us again, the water did return roughly 45 minutes later. Staff As with many places on the island, the hotel suffers from being understaffed. As a result, the experience for guests is lacking. Often times there were not enough beach towels for guests, the beach front bar/restaurant was not always open and when it was it was extremely slow. One day we sat down for lunch and it took over an hour to be served - likely due to our waiter forgetting to place our order with the kitchen. We went in for breakfast at the main restaurant one morning and had to leave as we waited 30 minutes and no one even came over to offer us coffee and most other tables around us did not even have their food after the same amount of time. The staff were pleasant however in no way do they live up to the "let us spoil you" message posted on the hotel's website.

Yelp
What an Incredible Escape! Not easy to get to, but TOTALLY worth it. This place is located on Isla Holbox in the Yucatan. First, getting to Isla Holbox. You have to fly into Cancun. Then there's a great Holbox transfer service (I'll review later) that will drive you the 1 1/2 drive to Chiquila, then you take a 30 minute ferry to the island. Then take a golf cart taxi to the hotel (there aren't hardly any cars on the island; everyone gets around on golf carts). Its a Tropical Paradise Hotel. Our room was located on the upper two floors of the building (only 2 rooms in our building). Our patios had lounge chairs, chairs, hammocks. Top floor had a hot tub with views. Mini fridge with waters in room. Indoor & Outdoor showers. There are no traditional shower heads; everything looked like branches or pails. I loved the Mexican Island decor. There's no television or phones (and you can forget your cell phone working; however, they do have free wi-fi). If it gets too hot for you, there IS air conditioning (had to blast that a couple of times). Incredible views of the ocean. Hotel pool is fantastic. Included in your cost is breakfast (very good) and hotel toys (bikes, kayaks, etc). There's a hotel restaurant inside lobby and a bar/restaurant, right next to the ocean. You will also have to deal with many resident creatures (iguanas, raccoon thieves, pelicans, stray dogs, etc). There's a sandbar a hundred feet out in the ocean that you can walk for a couple of miles and see all the flamingos. You can grab a bike to ride into town. Its an amazing place. PLUS, Excellent service. Everyone was friendly & helpful. I'm sad to be reviewing because that means I'm home.

Yelp
We got the Bungalow Cielo and OMG, it was gorgeous. AC worked great, the tub on the top floor palapa was amazing, the included breakfast was very good (FYI they don't have champagne to order mimosas- no biggie). Service at the hotel was excellent. They will call you a taxi when you need to go to town. I found the distance to be too far to walk in that heat, but they do also have bicycles you can use. The pool was never crowded either. Next time we may stay closer to town just to be walking distance, but I am glad we chose Villa Flamingos because it was awesome and we may not have seen some of the places that far up the island if we hadn't.

Yelp
OMG !! THIS PLACE IS BEAUTIFUL!!! too bad waters were not as nice around December(windy and slightly cold) they keep all areas really clean all the time!! we got a room on second floor with balcony overlooking water. next time I will male sure we stay more than 1 day. el pueblo is enchanting !!! crustaceo cascarudo restaurant in town was off the hook!!! staff is cool and informative! bikes that we took to town desperately need servicing. falling apart but we made it!! ride to town was worth the whole trip! I would stay there a week! IT IS MORE A 4.5 STAR PLACE, I COULD NOT GIVE A 4 ..... too GOOD for that. please do not change smiles for anything!! it does matter to us ! good job.
