My wife and I have been regular visitors to the Vitznauerhof over the last 10 years. ||We live just outside Zurich, so the Vitznauerhof has been a lovely escape / short break without the kids.||The hotel itself is a beautiful building, good spa facilities, stunning setting / views, and the food is excellent. I also receive a birthday card from the Vitznauerhof - OK, it's a marketing tactic, but it's a nice touch. ||However our latest visit was a disappointment. There appears to be have been a change in ownership / management and this is felt in every area of the experience. ||The staff, most of who appeared to be new, were very friendly but failed to deliver on the basics. Examples; We waited to be served for over 20 minutes at lunch. Despite 7-8 members of staff working in and around the restaurant nobody approached us. When our order was eventually taken and our food arrived, items were missing. The waitress became argumentative and walked off in a huff when I simply asked for what I had ordered. This, it should be pointed out, isn't out of the ordinary for Swiss service, but it is unusual for the Vitznauerhof.||My wife wanted to arrange a massage, however there was nobody staffing the spa on the Saturday. No explanation. Just nobody there. Towels appeared to have been rationed so we clung onto the two that we had been given into the second day.||Saturday evenings 'romantic' meal in front of the lake was somewhat impacted by the private function belting out the Abba Megamix and other 70's party hits. The Vitznauerhof is popular with private functions, understandably, and we have experienced this during previous stays. I imagine that it's a difficult balancing act to manage different sets of guests needs, but the focus is very much on the party.||Other examples of cost cutting - the nice selection of teas outside the rooms and in the spa have been replaced with cheaper alternatives, the appetizers (breads, spreads and oils) had been cut back to 4 slices of bread, table salt, pepper and oil and we were not offered more. Wine wasn't served with our starters, until we asked for it to be served.||In our experience, unless you are spending big money, Swiss accommodation is more 'miss' than 'hit'. The Vitznauerhof occupied a unique position, in that it offered a boutique hotel experience but represented good value, hence why we have returned so often. However, this is no longer the case.||We have stayed in virtually every class of room in the hotel, this stay was quite expensive for what we got, and based on the service experience or lack thereof, the value is no longer there for us. ||Regretfully we will look for alternatives for our next get-away. ||The Vitznauerhof is a beautiful hotel, it has so much potential but it is currently under poor ownership / management and unfortunately it now sits among the hundreds of mediocre, over-priced hotels in the Luzern area.
