Hotel Viura (Villabuena de Álava, La Rioja) 11 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Yes, those photos are real. Hotel Viura really is a precarious-looking cubist stack, an audacious modernist boutique planted in the soil of a traditional Spanish wine village in the Rioja Alavesa region. The contrast is only heightened by the fact that its next-door neighbor is an 18th-century church. Needless to say, the place has received some attention since its 2010 grand opening, but we’re happy to report that it’s more than just a pretty picture." - Tablet Hotels

Hotel Viura, Near Laguardia, Basque Country, Spain - Explore & Book

"Viura is gorgeous, simple as that. Its cool design, helpful staff and unbeatable position in the pretty village of Villabuena de Alava all elate. It may look like a stack of half-toppled boxes from the outside, but its light-filled interiors reveal nothing but order and charm. Cool, contemporary elegance flows throughout. Come for a small slice of heaven and some good red wine. Step inside and you find the whole building is cut into the side of a rock. You immediately acknowledge that you’re standing in a profoundly beautiful space. The cause for this has a surprising source - the polished concrete blocks from which the hotel is built. They appear like textured geological strata, adding a sense of remarkable calm. There are walls of glass, too, to bring the village inside. As for the rooms and suites, well, they pack a punch, and if you occasionally like to splash out on more expensive rooms, this is a great place to do it; Viura's are huge and most open onto private terraces. Elsewhere there's a sail-shaded terrace outside the bar, a beautiful sitting room with the daily papers, the Calado Termal spa (complete with 16th-century cave) and an excellent restaurant for modern rustic food. Highs The Rioja wine region is a beautiful place for a relaxing holiday: borrow bikes from the hotel and explore vineyards and pretty hilltop towns, and take day trips to Bilbao and Pamplona The design of this lovely hotel is hard to beat, and the contrast between the old village and the sparkling modern building works brilliantly Bedrooms are simply stunning; some have terraces, others fantastic village views, and all have gorgeous bathrooms with robes and potions We loved the communal roof terrace, which looks out over Villabuena de Alava's 16th-century church The cute village swimming pool lies directly below the hotel - it’s a great place to relax and meet the locals (open July and August) Lows You’re out in the country, so you’ll need a car to get here Word has spread - if you want a room at the weekends, you’ll need to book early If you don’t eat here, you’ll have to drive as there isn’t a restaurant in the village" - Tom Bell

This is the second time we have stayed in this hotel. It is truly excellent. The staff are very helpful and arranged tours of wine producers in Villabuena. The tours were excellent, very, very informative. The room was clean and quiet. One improvement would be a night light so occupants could find their way to the bathroom easily at night. The restaurant was absolutely splendid. Our dinners were outstanding. I had a super hamburger. The chicken dish is very creative and excellent. The breakfast buffet had something for everyone to say the least. The hotel is not far from major wine producers in Rioja as well as in close proximity to those in Villabuena. We hope to stay again.

Have to admit our first impression of the blocks of concrete made us wonder why we had booked this unconventional designed hotel in a quiet village, however, we got to love the place. The staff were extremely helpful and professional. The artwork around the hotel was incredibly interesting and unique. The design was very clever from top to bottom. The 4th floor had loads of private relaxation areas on the top of each block with walkways in between screened by bamboo. The lifts were the best we’ve used in the past ten hotels on this trip. Breakfast was a great selection of cold and hot food with plenty of cakes and fruit. Excellent coffee making and the best fresh orange juice. We stayed three nights and ate all the evenings in the restaurant. The Head Waiter (think his name was Mooney) looked after us extremely well as did his number2. The food was excellent and starters needed to be shared if we wanted three courses. Always a fabulous selection of wines both by the glass and bottle, with Mooney passing on his personal knowledge recommendations.|The front desk recommended we take the village wine bodegas tour and having the opportunity to visit a small, medium and large winery for tasting was brilliant.|The only three minor criticisms I have are: 1. A kettle to make tea would have been better than the pod coffee maker, 2. Filter water in room instead of bottles and 3. Reusable rather than disposable cups in room.

Beautiful! Calm, eclectic design everywhere, including a raining wall. Wonderful meal with great recommendations. Organised a walking tour of local bodegas for a group of us... To be recommended!

Let’s start with the positive. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The rooms are fairly clean. And there is parking.| Now the negative is out of the way and hard to find. Make sure you have Waze or another app. The rooms are small (I paid for an upgrade) I can’t imagine how small the other room are unless they just gave me a regular room and did not upgrade me. I have no way of knowing. Every furniture in the room is very cheap. The food was awful and expensive so I don’t recommend you eat at the hotel.

This is a modern structure set amidst the old town. Very handsome. More to the point, Everything is fine. It was quiet. The staff were nice. Everything worked. The location is good in that it is proximate to vineyards and Bilbao. We would be very pleased to stay again.

This hotel is a must stay. From the moment we walked in we were blown away. The architecture was unique, a very modern take in a historic town. The service was fantastic. The breakfast that was included was delicious. Our rooms were beautiful and very spacious. It is worth getting the terrace rooms. We were close to many of the wineries we visited while still having the charm of a small town. I would 100% recommend you to stay here.

We stayed for two nights in Viura and loved every minute! Great hospitality with lots of help and welcoming homey touches by a great team, special thanks to Marcos! |Room was modern and really big with amazing views, very stylish, clean and perfect terrace to end the day with a glass of Rioja. |The entire house speaks art and culture. Many cool pieces of contemporary art and artifacts. We had dinner the first night, which was delicious and with nice local touches. Breakfast in the morning is sumptuous with nice treats from the bakery, fresh eggs and cold cuts and lots of fruit. |Overall a 10 out of 10, we will definitely return!
