This hotel would have worked perfectly for me when I was younger and less discerning. But if you’re used to bathroom doors that close and stay closed, delicious breakfasts, and small details that add to your hotel stays, it might not be for you. |The first thing that greeted me upon arrival was a vending machine. Odd. Then someone appeared and shuttled me into a side room rather than checking me in. I waited, confused, then popped my head out and was told to get back in that room. Eventually I got checked in, taught the key system, and brought up to my room. The kettle I requested arrived promptly. In fact, anything we needed was taken care of—toilet paper, a taxi—efficiently. The location is good too. And there are still lovely remnants of what a beautiful house it once was.|I admit that I didn’t do a lot of research when I chose it. It was recommended in the NYT and has a high rating on Trip Advisor, but I’m not quite sure why. Perhaps my expectations were too high? My 22 year old self, backpacking around Europe, would have felt like I was in the lap of luxury. My older self, not so much.
