16 Best Hotels in Berlin—Including Artsy Boutiques and Transformed Bathhouses | Condé Nast Traveler

Hotel Zoo Berlin

"Start us off with an overview and an entrance.Built in 1891 as a private residence and converted into a hotel in 1911, this has been one of West Berlin’s poshest stays for more than a century. In the 1950s, it served as the VIP hotel for the Berlin International Film Festival and was a haunt for A-listers like Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren. So it’s fitting that the hotel’s glamorous history has been reinterpreted by two Hollywood designers, Dayna Lee and Ted Berner. To reach reception, you must walk a long, jade-green carpet woven with images of leopards, a nod to both the hotel’s name and a clever twist on its silver-screen past. The lobby wows upon entry: soaring 22-foot ceilings, double-height windows, and a glassed-in fireplace sit below an immense chandelier dripping with delicate chains. Tom Dixon wing chairs and oversized red velvet sofas add to the glam factor, while comfortable leather club chairs invite lounging. How elegant. And who will we see here?Socialites, fashionistas, and scenesters. What are the rooms like? The 141 rooms and suites have an Art Deco feel, and luxe detailing like rich velvet and leather furnishings, platform beds, gleaming hardwood floors, and plush area rugs. Each has a different layout, with Petit rooms starting at around 200 square feet, while the newer Studio Suites are generously sized, measuring 645 square feet with separate living and sleeping areas. Only the suites have freestanding tubs. The two sprawling six-floor Penthouse Suites—the Ku’Damm Suite and The Suite—are a different world altogether, with large seating areas outfitted with George Smith furnishings in fuchsia and pink; one has a balcony, and both have double-sided fireplaces. Some rooms overlook the courtyard; others have views of the Kurfürstendamm or the opulent historic Theater des Westens. What are our food options, if we're not feeling like going beyond the lobby?Grace Restaurant offers small plates with an Asian and European flair; the high-ceilinged open space is sophisticated, with white tablecloths and sumptuous green velvet and leather seating. The speakeasy-style Grace Bar, meanwhile, has a glam 1920s vibe, with exposed brick walls and miles of red velvet. It’s a favorite among the beautiful set of Berlin, especially on weekends, when DJs are spinning. There’s an adjoining open-air winter garden/smoking lounge with a cozy gas fireplace. A seasonal rooftop bar (open May to September) has an open fireplace for cooler nights, umbrellas for sunny days, and grand views of the city and sunset in all seasons. Note that breakfast isn't included, but rooms are stocked with Nespresso coffee machines. Wrap it up—what makes Hotel Zoo worth the stay? The cool design aesthetic and location on Ku'damm, Berlin's best shopping street." - Jennifer Ceaser

HOTEL ZOO BERLIN (Berlin, Germany) 9 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"In a way, the phrase “a new spin on an old classic” sums up just about everything that’s cool in Berlin. Not that that’s a criticism. They’ve got such great raw material to work with, there’s no sense beginning from a blank slate. Any hotelier, for example, would be thrilled to have something as monumental as Hotel Zoo to work with. A nineteenth-century mansion converted into a luxury hotel in 1911, it played host to many of the twentieth century’s leading lights, before beginning a slow fade into obscurity." - Tablet Hotels

Google
The hotel itself is well located and the rooms are spacious and amazing. The beds are comfortable and very quiet. I don’t sleep well in hotels but this was absolutely amazing. One thing that was my biggest complaint are the staff. The front office girls are extremely rude and cold. They hardly talked or asked questions, they basically just wanted you to check-in/check-out and leave. Not once did they smile or laugh. It seemed as if they were devastated to be working here. Are they either burnt out or is the management just not training them well? Otherwise, the product itself is great and fantastic. Hopefully they can get the service fixed.

Google
I wouldn’t recommend this hotel. The rooms and location are just okay—nothing special—but the experience was ruined by constant loud club music until 3am, making sleep impossible. The staff were some of the rudest I’ve encountered, giving hostile looks just for walking to our room. The bar was almost inaccessible, and when we did get in it felt like a brothel, with women openly soliciting. We were asked to leave after about 10 minutes, left waiting while bar staff laughed, had our seats taken for non-guests, and were harassed by aggressive doormen—one even tried to pick a fight and another demanded my son’s ID despite him clearly being over 21. Overall, an uncomfortable and unpleasant stay.

This hotel gives you a mix of unusual feelings. It was a strange experience. For people who are used to staying in large chain hotels, it might feel a bit odd — not in a bad way, definitely not bad — but it’s hard to say it fits my style. Also, the gym is incredibly small and inadequate, It’s quite clean, and everything is done with nature in mind — or at least they try to give that impression.

Google
Definitely our favorite place to stay in Berlin. Great stylish atmosphere, very professional, friendly staff which fulfills your wishes before you expressed them. Location is very central on Ku‘damm with subway station in front of the door and trainstation around the corner. Night in the bar over the weekend is a must. Great party! Rooms are great and comfortable!

I booked this hotel for a relaxing 6 days trip to Berlin and certainly did not expect to be writing this on my cut short return . I am sure you agree that the job of a hotel is not just to provide a place to sleep but also a safe and secure place to relax away from home .On Tuesday 18th November after a day out shopping we returned to room 426 to find two expensive items had been stolen A leather Emporio Armani jacket removed from the wardrobe including its hanger , and a bottle of CREED aftershave stolen from the bathroom . (See attached pics used from Internet )||I immediately went to the reception to report this and demanded the police be called ||"Well its never happened before " was the dismissive response by the receptionist .||The police arrived in 15 minutes and were excellent throughout the investigation and said they could see the upset caused .||The hotel is negligent in its responsibility to their security of their guests.||No CCTV cameras in the hotel corridors leading to the rooms and apparently no proper proceeds for investigation. A VERY UNSAFE ENVIROMENT INDEED ..||I was told on the evening of the theft that the hotel manager has been contacted and will deal with this the following morning .||Instead we were met by the operations manager Joana Jungnickel who stood in reception and asked us what we wanted her to do ! ||This operations manager took a stance that we might of well made this up , we had been made aware from the police that 3 cleaning staff were the only people who had entered the room whilst we had been out and of course each of them denied any knowledge the theft after being interviewed.||Joana jungnickel (operations manager) was very harassed ,unprofessional and her appearance and approach did this hotel no favors whatsoever .totally out of her depth ,rude, and dismissed us until she said she had time to process things !!!||we had to wait another hour for her to get back to us another day of our break interrupted Assurances that they were looking into it and a view taken on making amends and restoring the good will of our intended stay instead we were made to feel like potential scammers !!!||the whole experience was violating and abusive and worse than the theft of the said items .||The Hotel ZOO can add all the chandeliers and glitz it wants but if there is a thief working in this hotel and the management are not equipped to deal with guest relations ,then it is the FAILING in the purpose of a quality hotel .||AVOID YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!!

I had an absolutely delightful stay at Hotel Zoo Berlin! The interior of the hotel is wonderful, exuding a charm that is both elegant and welcoming. The breakfast selection was superb, offering a wide variety of delicious options to start the day right. Additionally, the location of the hotel is top-notch, making it incredibly easy to explore the vibrant city of Berlin. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a stylish and comfortable stay in the heart of the city!

Google
Horrible! It’s so noisy, especially on Friday and Saturday nights when the bar plays club music until 2:00 a.m. Walls are vibrating. And don’t expect service with a smile. If the staff simply acknowledges your existence, consider it a win. Any complaints are given lip service, that’s it. Stay at the zoo, not Hotel Zoo… you’ll have a better nights sleep.

Google
The loud, and frankly terrible, bassy music, played through Friday night until the small hours of Saturday morning, frankly ruined a stay.|The rooms are airy and clean, however, the hotel is trying to be flashy but is more Cheshire than Dorchester. The lift walls are decorated with photographers pointing inwards, as the doors closed and the lift moves the cameras all flash. Enough said really.|They need to decide if they want to be a hotel or a nightclub.|I would not stay here again.|They are so aggrieved by this opinion that they have had my review on Google Maps suspended on the grounds of "defamation". Pathetic.

Yelp
An exceptionally well put together boutique hotel with great decor, interesting artwork, and overall a very competent, accommodating and professional staff in a great location right on Ku'damm. A very good restaurant on site (Grace) is another added plus. Only quibbles: -no sauna/steam room/spa -getting the room bill correct does not seem to be their forte...upon arrival, my Amex was pre-authorized for the full amount of the stay plus anticipated incidentals/extras, even though the rooms had been pre paid for all three nights, and only the upgrade and incidentals should have been pre authorized. Then, upon check out, another too high charge was initially authorized but apparently adjusted/credited with the help of another (senior) staff member--too early too call if it's all sorted out That said, we will unquestionably return--billing snafu aside, the experience was near the top of what I've experienced in other high end hotels.

Yelp
After 20+ hours of travel my husband and I were so excited to finally arrive at Hotel Zoo. Our room was lovely, the bed was soft and we quickly crashed for the night. Our stay was great! The staff was helpful with directions, the bar was busy and great for people watching and we were centrally located and able to easily explore the city on foot/train from here. The real highlight of Hotel Zoo is the breakfast. It made me feel like a queen with the beautiful display and the sheer number of options would make anyone drool. It truly made our trip to Berlin

Yelp
This is a fabulous hotel with a even more fabulous staff. I've just spent the last week here when the world shut down and all I can say is a huge thank you to each staff member that made it feel like my home. I'll never forget this week. From front desk to housekeeping to bar and restaurant staff, all 5 star and eager to help. You find the true heart of a hotel in tough times not easy ones. They excelled and must have great upper management. I'd of course go just for the popcorn, but the showers are epic too! It's my Berlin pick. Please try it when you're visiting. Oh, btw... best street in Berlin. Stay strong Zoo!!!

Yelp
absolutely loved my stay at Zoo hotel. we traveled as a team for work and stayed at different Marriott/Bonvoy hotels and this one was one of the most favorites of all of us. the vibe... is amazing!!!! the decore, attention to details, the ambience they have created with vintage furniture exudes european luxury. we also enjoyed great service, cleaniliness, and restaurant breakfast quality. The location is prime, amidst all the shopping buzz of old west berlin. what could have been done better that keeps this place one short of 5 star: - The paparatzi flashes in the elevator were too much after the first time... - rooms were tiny, especially for longer stays. - the Bonvoy integration is not full so my reservation did not show up on my app and it took me a long time and couple emails to have my points added to my account. - breakfast is very expensive at €39.

Yelp
I like a lot of glamor with my grit - so I'm a fan of Hotel Zoo, particularly the lounge/bar. Look, I live in yoga pants, sweats, glasses, no makeup when I'm not fully suited up for business clients or conferences, so it's nice to have occasions to dress up - particularly in cities that are more skewed to the avant-garde counterculture, like Berlin. This is no Berghain. My debonair companion and I arrived around 11p on a Wednesday night, and apart from the flocks of Russian prostitutes (I hate to profile, but hate to be naive even more) the crowd seemed genteel and upscale. Men in suits and no denim in sight. Gorgeous "library" themed lounge. As a 80% teetotaler, I enjoyed complimentary popcorn and sparkling water and he enjoyed his scotch. Popcorn was delicious - I had seconds! Nice sophisticated atmosphere for a classy nightcap. Watch the fur fly. You know what I mean.

Yelp
Gorgeous lobby, very clever design, comfy beds. Amazing artwork, great bathrooms, nice service. Could really use ice machines in the hallways. Main thing wrong: the bar/lounge is filled with hookers. Starting at around 11:30 you will notice the crowd change from normal, to hookers. Not one but groups of them. The management doesn't seem to care, in fact they seem to be cool with it. Super weird. There are lots of other high end hotels with awesome bars, get it together management!!

Yelp
This review is just for the restaurant / bar... Let's put it this way, if u end up here, seriously why did u bother coming to Berlin? I was having such a great evening after an Oper until a friend dragged me here to meet some other people. I was hoping to stop in at Paris Bar, but instead wound up here. This city is so fantastic because it's exactly not this place. If I wanted this kind of ambience and company I would have moved to, um, Houston? Luxury is wonderful, but this place is just flat without any chic or edge, just painfully (and I mean painfully) boring. Was so happy to land back in the east this evening and away from this bar and its inhabitants. Did not try the food, the Prosecco was unusual and not particularly to my liking. Music uninspired, lighting uncomfortable, almost as bad as a Trump-esque decor, no reason to go back.

Yelp
HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! They did not book our room so we had to wait while they sorted the room... took forever, in the meantime, they offered a free drink for my wife and me at the bar to make up for the inconvenience (Good start I thought) but then after we ordered the bartender told us what we chose was too expensive and we had to pay!!! What a joke!!! Its not like we ordered a $100 bottle wine or something, we ordered a house-made cocktail 12€ and a Vodka Tonic 13€ the menu average is 17€. How cheap are they!!! We paid for our drinks instead, no apology, nothing! Then the restaurant (the reason why I booked the place) was closed due to vacation!!! WOW, I thought I was on a vacation... Nope!!! This place was such a disappointment other than being clean this place had no upside what so ever!!!!! I will never stay there again!!

Yelp
This used to be a great hotel to stay in Berlin, one can even book through the Starwood Hotels portal, but unfortunately I can't any longer recommend Hotel Zoo. The problems stem from the two bars and hotel management's lack of ability to reign in their many excesses. It seems the bars operate completely separate from the hotel and have no consideration for hotel guests. This odd arrangement is in stark contrast to Berlin's many 5-star hotels who wisely bend over backwards to pamper their guests. If you're looking for a raucous party then by all means check out the bars at Hotel Zoo. If you want a real 5-star hotel then look elsewhere.

Yelp
Great hotel in Charlottenburg. The room is modern and airy and clean, and they have terrific organic bath products. My one tiny quibble is with the room setup; open shower means no privacy, but if you don't care or are on your own it's no big deal. The lobby is elegant and stylish. Really like the staff too; everyone has been lovely.

John O.

Yelp
I am currently staying in the VERY newly renovated Hotel Zoo in the center of the shopping district of Berlin. I believe it may even be under new ownership perhaps. The hotel has a really cool and stylish vibe to it. Kind of like a W hotel in the States. The lobby bar is a nice combination of comfort and style. The hotel staff are super friendly, helpful and all of them have a command of English. There is an Apple Store to the right, and an Urban Outfitters to the left, just to give an idea of the location. But of course there are cute German cafes and restaurants nearby. My only complaint is that the hotel beds are a bit hard for my taste, and the wifi was hit or miss. Otherwise the Hotel Zoo is a fantastic place to stay in Berlin!

Yelp
Terrible service! Beautiful hotel very chic, the people at the front desk are borderline criminal though. We booked through Bonvoy since they are considered one of the Bonvoy properties. We initially booked for 2 nights, after arriving we were told they would not honor our Bonvoy Amenities because they are not a Marriott hotel. Being platinum members with the bon voyage program gives us free breakfast cocktails and other amenities per stay wherever we go. Her attitude was so offensive that we said all right we will just stay one night then. This was after she had already charged our card for two nights and a deposit for incidentals. We told her since we were only going to stay one night we expected to be refunded the second night. She said no, we would need to talk to Marriott if we wanted to get any kind of refund since we had already booked two nights at her hotel. We asked for the manager and she was shocked to say the least. Luckily he knew what she was saying wasn't true and reassured us we would be refunded but wanted us to call him before we checked out to make sure it happened. That probably means they do this and charge people for extra days when they shouldn't. At checkout they tried to charge us for phone calls that were never made by us and asked us if we had taken anything from the minibar so they could charge us for that. Since we did not take anything, he was out of luck. We travel a lot, had just arrived from San Francisco and were exhausted! I have not felt so uncomfortable by a hotel before and would certainly advise anyone considering there to find another property. The negative attitude over Bonvoy was really bad, I would drop them if I were Bonvoy management.
