I frequent oddities markets back at home, so OF COURSE I had to stop by this one while in town on vacation. I could not get any of the larger or more fragile items I wanted since I'd be flying home with it, but I had to get a few cute stationary pieces.

Stumbled upon this gem today. A hand full of items stirred my memory growing up. Our Keiki were welcomed and explored all the treasures that were awaiting their littles hands. Cool vibe and smells ono too.

This shop is beautifully decorated, and reasonably priced. Just found these old Hawaiian photos for very good prices. They also sell good quality vintage clothes, maps and decorative items.

This shop was so fun, and they're friendly! They have quite the collection! At first we walked in and felt like we made a big mistake...haha my friends asked, "is this more of a masculine store?" He said, "We have a little bit of everything" and oh boy do they!! My son who's 7 said it was the best shop we went to in the area, and I must agree! Can't wait to return!

Yelp
A delightful cabinet of curiosities, Hound & Quail is a charming shop of carefully curated gifts, cards, art, stuffed animals, bugs in lucite and so much more. There is some serious attention to detail going on here and items in price points that will appeal to everyone. If you're interested in decor or gifts that run...shall we say...far left of center...then this is the place for you.

Yelp
This review is for the private champagne tasting that took place here. When I first walked in, I was in awe of this unique and curious place. Everywhere you look there is something interesting to see. I especially enjoyed the antiques and the vintage portraits. The owners and staff were very nice and helped make the evening memorable. Liane led the champagne tasting and provided key details on the origin of champagne. We got to taste 7 different bottles. We were also served crostini, cheese, salami, chips, and the popular caviar spread. Ended the evening with chocolate covered strawberries and almond chocolates. I would love to come back and purchase some items that caught my eye. While speaking with some friends we saw a 1920's newspaper. I also saw honey in an enclosed glass case. If you are looking for a special antique shop come visit! Location is on nuuanu street, DT. Street parking or there is close garage parking nearby.

Yelp
It's amazing that a place like this even exists on Oahu and I'm so glad that it's here, because I felt like I stepped into the old Bone Room when it was on Solano Avenue in Berkeley, California. The Bone Room sold many fine items, like Gothic Alchemy jewelry, bug specimens, home decor, minerals and rocks, antiques and incense; Hound and Quail has all that except the Gothic Alchemy jewelry and human/animal bones. They do have some taxidermy, antler horns and a hanging (fake) skeleton, which caught my eye and lured me into the store. As soon as you step into the store, you feel like I entered a portal into a past time where old Victrolas ruled, steam trunks were the "in" luggage, men's swim suits looked like women's, when skeleton keys actually worked, and when people had to actually write letters and wait for a reply! If I were on Instagram, I'd tag this store with the following words: magical, curated goods, historical goods, household decor, old, antique, men's, taxidermy, leather, man cave. I actually did not want to leave. I wanted to stay there all day, and even possibly the next day and maybe the day after that. One of the owners, Mark, was super nice and attentive and genuinely happy that I was enjoying their taste in curated goods. It's pretty epic, you gotta go check it out yourself! I parked in the Chinatown Municipal Parking on Bethel Street and it was pretty cheap at 50 cents an hour on a Saturday.

Yelp
In the heart of Chinatown or the International District depending on your perspective, this one-of-a-kind hole in the wall is definitely worth a stop. I was waiting for my Dim Sum takeout order, see my review for Mei Sum Dim Sum, and I stopped by, intrigued by the items in the window. This is one of the most interesting assortments of items old and new I've seen locally. I picked up some unpolished gems and crystals and a few sterling silver religious necklaces. Everything was inexpensive and they'll make great gifts. I had a few questions and as it wasn't too busy the store owner looked up several items for me, the writing wasn't in English and we found translations. I appreciate this kind of personal service and I'll be back. It's a bit like Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe on the waterfront in downtown Seattle. I can't wait to see what is there next time?

Yelp
I've been to quite a few antique stores in my 23 years of life. This is by far my favorite. It's aesthetic. It's pleasing. It's all of the good qualities you would like in an antique store. The collection is perfectly curated & matched with the most reasonable prices. If you're ever looking to "shop old decor," this is the place. Or simply stop in & just enjoy the atmosphere & have a nice browse. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Cool stuff! So many antique things to look at and buy. You can easily spend a great time just looking through all the different things like: old cameras, old photos, frames, military badges and more. If you love and appreciate things of the past, then you'll definitely enjoy browsing around. They even have a separate shelf of classic literature that you can read or just admire.

Yelp
I went downtown Tuesday to look for things for my unkos birthday! He loves old things and we joke cause he is old. The prices were pretty high but a few things are reasonable. Th young guy working was busy helping another lady in Japanese which I thought was cool but then he saw me and helped me find things in my budget. Lots of old haoles treat it like a museum, gotta buy things! If I make more money I'd buy more. Thank you

Yelp
Super cool store! They've got a really neat assortment of unique antiques and oddities. Quite a few vintage medical things too. Also Brian (Bryan?) at the store is super nice! Go visit!

Yelp
The store is cool, the dude working - not so much. I was going to purchase some bugs and didn't because that dude sort of sucked. It seemed like we were a bother coming into the store.

Yelp
Absolutely love the feel of the shop and the amazing vintage pieces inside as well. Very well priced for the hard to find unique items found within. Hard not to find something you'd want to take home

Yelp
Highlight of my shopping in Honolulu! I love a good antique store and so appreciate the curating that has gone in to this shop! Mark was wonderful and I look forward to visiting anytime I visit the island.

Yelp
The aesthetic of the store was so beautiful and if I needed to decorate a library or some sort of mini museum in my house or a man cave these are definitely the vibes I'd want to replicate. I was wandering around downtown with a visiting friend, so we kept hopping in and out at the stores in the area looking for unique gifts for her to take home. We were initially intimidated to go inside, but after about 45 minutes at Hound & Quail, we looked at each other at checkout and both said how happy we were that we stopped by. It was a little pricy but this store carried such unique items like antique sewing machines, taxidermy, leather goods, historical family photos and vintage post cards that I think if you find something you love here, then it's definitely justifiable. I also can't imagine another place on island carrying such a collection of items! Definitely a unique store and highly recommend stopping by and taking a look at their curiosities and oddities!

Yelp
Have been there twice. Kahea waited on us both times. Such a friendly and personable young man. Would hire him away if I owned a store. What an amazing collection of oddities. Kind of a must-see place for people who appreciate antiquity.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! This store is truly one of a kind here. I would have expected this kind of place in Seattle or Portland. I'm glad it made its way to Hawaii! As a lover of oddities and relics from the past, this store really exceeded my expectations. I always end up making a purchase every time I stop by. My friends will ask me where I would get said object from and I'll always tell them about Hound and Quail!! Perfect place for us weirdos

Yelp
Most amazing find in the heart of Chinatown! Yesterday was our second trip there and it did not disappoint!! I scored a vintage globe, a waterfowl taxidermy, antique photos, an antique dog ashtray and some other great finds. If you love collectibles, oddities, taxidermy and other vintage ephemera - you must go here. The owners have fabulous taste and are very friendly. This is my home away home ala Necromance in Los Angeles.

Yelp
Really really cool spot! Just happened upon it during a walk through Chinatown. I popped in because it was just too cool. I found out they do film shoots for TV shows and rent props to movies. They also sell a small curated selection of goods. Its just a really neat place to look around and talk to the sales associates.

Yelp
Hound & Quail is one of the most unique and inspirational stores in state. As a creative it's a dream come true, a curated space that sparks my curiosities, and indulges my love of vintage and design. There's an incredible energy of entrepreneurs in Hawaii, and every time I've been into this space I've been welcomed with great conversation and a wonderful experience. I appreciate both the time that the founders have taken in genuinely talking with me and in the efforts that have clearly been taken to thoughtfully curate and design this unique gem of a store. In regards to the prior review. I feel quite the opposite. I wouldn't consider myself "hipster" looking, and I felt welcomed. I'm grateful for this space and for those that dream big in creating new experiences and boutiques in Hawai'i!

Yelp
Usually I go second hand Walmart to find antiques I'm looking for but I did not find what I was looking for here also.

Yelp
I went in today because I had been meaning to go for MONTHS. I knew it was a very specially curated type of place and had full intentions of going on my own, but just so happened to be in the area with my whole family ( I have 3 kids: 11, 9, and 6) and couldn't pass it up. We all loved it. The place is an awesome treasure trove of antique goodies. The person at the front desk (owner?) was very kind and not at all snooty even though I brought in my kids. And trust me they were in full-on exploration mode. Which is why I felt the need to give a review. The place is beautiful, they were playing good music, and they didn't treat us like we had the plague because we had our munchkins. Not bad, I gotta say. Anyway, I intend to go back and pick up a few lovely things I saw today. Definitely drop in and take a look at all the cool stuff they have if you ever get a chance. :)

Yelp
I have visited the store many times, and I am continually impressed with the beautiful space and wonderfully strange goods! It's like walking into a carefully curated cabinet of wonders, where you might find a taxidermy ostrich next to vintage medical texts on great mid century finds. The owners Mark and Travis have always been very sweet and welcoming. We always end up talking and laughing about random things, and, apart from their keen aesthetic sensibilities, I appreciate their warmth and sense of humor. Looking forward to all their future events like wine tastings, book clubs, and drawing classes. Oh and their basement gallery is dope too!

Yelp
Very interesting store. The young man in charge the day we were in needs to remember that acting as if he's just a warm body with his too loud and harsh music playing in the background doesn't make the experience as appealing as the merchandise is.

Yelp
The first time I went to this place, I was really impressed with the inventory as well as the individual I was speaking to. Next visit was less than enthusiastic; this was a different worker and he really could care less if I was interested in helping me. A year later, I called to inquire about an item I saw and was interested in purchasing. The individual I spoke to informed me that there was no such item available. A few days ago, I walked past Hound and Quail early in the morning. The store was still closed, so I casually glanced through the window to view their inventory. Lo and behold the item I wanted to purchase was available! I'll be taking my business elsewhere instead.

Yelp
Finally made it here. Nice collection of curiosities. Inquired about some vintage cameras and the shop person Mark was knowledgeable. Definitely coming here to Christmas shop.

Yelp
I'm so over rude HNL salespeople who run the "cool" Chinatown spots. I don't know whether to attribute their major attitude to an inferiority complex or the arrogance that sometimes comes with being a big fish in a small island pond. But seriously. Who are the rude folks who run this store? They keep being written up and lauded for their innovation and entrepreneurship, but they really need to work on their manners. The first time I visited, I was greeted begrudgingly and scanned (what, was my outfit not good enough?). What's the vetting process for giving out smiles and saying "hello" to customers? Who makes the cut? Maybe this guy has read BLINK one too many times. Whatever, I get it. I wasn't really looking to buy a dead bug for $60; perhaps the astute salesperson picked up on that. Anyhoo, he could have at least acknowledged me when I left and thanked him. Don't we all deserve this common courtesy? The second time I popped in was for an art show. Once again, my friends and i were essentially ignored by the salespeople who were too busy chatting up and serving drinks to people who were, I suppose, more hip than us. They didn't bother directing us to the gallery downstairs even though it was pretty clear we were in need of direction and information. After the chilly reception, we didn't feel like asking.

Yelp
I first started checking out H & Q at their old location and quickly fell in love with not only the rotating collection of hard to find treasures, but the owners, Mark and Travis. Before I even knew them, I remember always being greeted with such sincerity and usually a glass of wine too! These guys quickly became friends just from being so damn friendly. When I decided to remodel my store a couple of years ago, they were totally eager to help me brainstorm different interior concepts and I found some key pieces for my project at H & Q... like the kind of stuff you can't possibly find anywhere else on the island, or in the state! Needless to say, I was pretty stoked to have them relocate to Chinatown where they are now just down the street, woohoo! They also have expanded their hours and house one of the hippest art galleries in the hood, which they named the Outpost. It's the spot to check out art shows that push the boundaries and offer something unexpected. H & Q is a must on First Fridays. Mark and Travis truly bring such inspiration and style to the island. Their store is not only well curated with everything from taxidermy to mid-century furniture to small leather goods, it's a unique cross between curiosities and antiques, with everything else in between. The easiest way to descibe it is "cool sh!t"! And a bonus, their prices are really good and the sales staff is always friendly and full of knowledge about their "finds". I've bought taxidermy, mirrors, wall art, gifts, and more here, and I've also wandered in to just browse. There are always new goodies in the shop and Mark and Travis totally make the place, I'm so stoked to have these guys in the hood. Love H & Q and highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
If you're looking to find the perfect way to decorate your home or office, Hound and Quail has curated an entire store full of awesome finds. They restored an old building in Chinatown and it feels as if you're walking into a Brooklyn apartment when you open the front doors. Can't say enough good things about this place. Plus, there's a rad gallery room in the basement! Very hip vibes.

Yelp
VISIT THIS CURATED SHOP--IT IS A DELIGHTFUL SENSORY EXPERIENCE ALL AROUND! I have purchased many (too many to count!) super unique art, architectural, furniture, medical collectibles, and oddities from this fantastic one of a kind boutique shop for years since I moved from my artist community in San Fran years ago. I have given many of their unique items as gifts and recipients have been delighted! Walking in the shop after moving from San Fran made me feel at home immediately! The owners curate their collection impeccably and have great eyes. Their prices are very reasonable and they go out of their way to satisfy and please their customers. And, they have a wealth of knowledge relative to their products. I was so happy when they moved to Chinatown, which is an artists/eccentrics delight---their move illustrates their committment to revitalization of our community with quality, artistic, curated pieces of art. The owners have engaging, humorous personalities, and I so enjoy talking with them. There is never an ounce of that snooty attitude that one finds in NYC (e.g. SoHo) or other big cities. They go out of their way to engage in conversation---simply for the joy and delight of conversation, not to sell. They are genuinely interested in other people! Hound and Quail has been featured in many national magazines and is our little gem in Hawaii. Their shop is an escape, stimulates all your senses and particularly your imagination...... I am always anxious to stop in to investigate what new treasures are there!
