I arrived with one other person at about 5:45pm on October 5th 2019. There was an open gate with an attendant letting other staff and vendors in. The attendant said the main gate would be opening at 6pm as advertised on the website and all promotional materials. So we walked down the street and waited at the main gate. At 6pm the side staff gate was closed and locked while the main gate was still padlocked. Due to this fact there were multiple cars trapped inside the venue with no way in or out of the completely gated in facility. We witnessed a beige vehicle go around the parking lot for 10 minutes looking for a way to get out. This fact and providing documentation was brought to the Fire Marshall’s attention. The gate was finally opened to allow customers inside at 6:10pm, although the box office did not open until 6:17pm. We bought our tickets and went inside the event. From there, event security searched our belongings and took the ticket stubs, and we proceeded into an event. Then we realized it was still being setup at the time.
Upon entering the event around 6:20pm, 20 minutes after the posted opening time, most of the vendors were not open, and some weren’t even setup yet. A giant paintball sign was still being strung up to a shipping container. Only one single vendor seemed to be open for business with a very nice “soup of the day is alcohol ” sign, which was the most amusement we had at the entire event. We walked around for a little bit thinking we had beaten the crowds to the event and then decided to get in line for the actual haunt. There was no barrier from preventing us to join the line and audio was already playing from the inside of the house itself. As soon as we reached the front of the haunt itself a very nice woman told us the haunt itself would not be opening till around 7:30pm which is the normal time for dusk. As others continued to enter the line for the house we exited looking for a person in charge of the event to figure out what was going on as the website stated a 6pm event opening and only one single bar was opened by 6:20.
Finally, we came across Peter Regalado (who I recognized from a WSVN 7 news piece) talking to the fire marshall. We walked over and he said he was in charge. He reiterated what was said at the front of the house that it would not be opening until after sunset. Our plan was to not wait in long lines and get to the haunt early, continuing our evening elsewhere. He stated that we should enjoy the other “amenities” which were open at the event at the time which at the time only one bar was still open. We asked Peter if we could get a refund because we would not be staying around for another hour waiting for the haunt to open. He stated we needed to go back to the ticket office in order to get a refund for the ticket cost. The Fire Marshall standing next to Peter also seemed concerned about how the event was being run.
Upon leaving the event we were told we could not reenter by the security staff, (though they were incredibly friendly) and proceeded to the box office. After 6 minutes of discussion at the box office and a phon call later, we were finally refunded. We did not experience the haunt itself but I have included photos of what we did see. The overall opinion of how the event was run gives me very little confidence we missed an amazing hunt itself.
I was really looking forward to attending this event but now am just happy to have my money back! Word to the wise stay, far away and enjoy other quality South Florida haunts like Enigma Haunt in Boca Raton, whose free parking will pay its cost in gas alone! (Versus the 10 dollar parking fee at House of Death)
