On the Grid : House of Trembling Madness II

"House of Trembling madness has become a York institution. So much so that they've branched out and opened another one. The new one occupies a former leather goods store on Lendal and is much bigger and grander. Spread over three floors with several cosy rooms, many of which still retaining much of their ornate Georgian spender, this new addition is sure to be as popular and the original one on Stonegate. And with both premises housing a fantastic bottle shop with hundreds of beers from all over the world, you can either sit in and admire the view or take a few bottles of you favourite beers home with you." - Abell Design

On the Grid : House Of The Trembling Madness

"Blink and you'll miss the entrance to one of York's more eccentric watering holes, tucked above a bottle shop on Stonegate. It's worth propping your eyes open and finding it for so many reasons, be it the rabble of leering taxidermy animals (don't take your vegan friends) that greet you, the range of delicious and dangerous beers, or the hearty food. Get there early for an outrageously good pie / mash / pint combo, then fail to leave until the reason behind the name becomes clear." - Abell Design

Really nice place and it is huge! We tried the two different soups with the ultimate potato's and they were both really nice. For my the creamy chicken was too salty but I'm not a salt fan! Prices were reasonable and the selection of beer was alright. The bartender and server were really friendly. Atmosphere was great with music on and candles lit. The artwork is very interesting on every floor. Certainly for those with an open mind and an acquired taste! Worth a visit for sure.

Popped into York today for our wedding anniversary and came straight here. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the beers are great with a wide selection on offer with my favourite being the London Stout. It was very smooth. My wife had a few gins which she enjoyed and had the Caesar Slaughter sandwich which I tried and was lovely. Always nice to come here and I’ll definitely be back

How have we only just discovered this gem?! 🍻 The quirky décor is brilliant, with so many nooks and crannies to explore. We didn’t eat on this visit, but what we saw others enjoying looked absolutely amazing. The upstairs rooms you can privately book are such a great touch, and wandering through all the different floors was endlessly entertaining. Honestly, we could have stayed all day!

Delicious lunch here recently. We enjoyed a Yorkshire rarebit last time we visited and hoped to have the same again. Menu has changed! No problem though as their new sandwiches are totally delicious. Friendly staff. Great service. Relaxed lunchtime atmosphere and a mix of customers- solo or couples in for in a coffee, a glass of wine, for lunch, a larger group getting a wedding celebration started. Bit of everything here. Really quirky building. Will be back.

Stunning place! 😍 Right up my street, well worth my struggle up the steep stairs! I'm a disabled person and was welcomed into the shop and allowed to leave my walker there. The bar is up stairs and is stunning! Gorgeous pint of hand pulled ale in a beautifully atmospheric bar with vaulted beamed ceiling. The decor is a mixture of hunting Lodge meets Victorian curious. it's as good as everything else here! Brought a beer home from the very well stocked shop on the ground level. Toilets are on the lower level down another staircase, where you'll find another well stocked spirits area.

Excellent range of beers, both hand pulled and craft/keg. Two different bars, one upstairs and one at ground level. Lots of space and different rooms to sit in. Didn't try the food as we weren't hungry at the time we visited but the bets were great and very helpful and knowledgeable staff too.

Atmospheric pub on multiple floors. Helpful bartenders. Good selection of beer. Maybe slightly more expensive than others in the area, but worth it to sigh and drink your beer and feel relaxed.

Stumbled in looking for a breakfast... and what a brilliant breakfast it was! Great service and good coffee. Definitely visiting this spot again soon.
