This review is about the delivery service I used -- while the store has a list of three movers, the card also says that the movers are not affiliated with Housing works and that Housing Works assumes for their rates, services or other arrangements. HOUSING WORKS WOULD PROBABLY DO WELL TO HAVE THEIR OWN INTERNAL DELIVERY PEOPLE. If they assume no responsibility for the movers names and numbers they give you, then they should not do this at all. They should not offer any names/numbers for mover. READ on ...
Having not been in the store in a very long time, I have stopped by three times in the past month. I guess due to COVID there is much less merchandise in the store. Prices still seem to be a bit on the high side.
But today, there was a fantastic chair sitting there in excellent condition and the chair was from a name brand manufacturer - Thomasville, a company that no longer manufacturers furniture. They were once considered one of the top furniture manufacturers in the USA.
The chair looked great and it had a price of $ 300.00 which was crossed out and marked down to $ 225.00. I wanted the chair, but the store is in Manhattan and I am in Brooklyn so here we go... I would need it delivered. I asked about delivery, the cashier man gave me the card with the three delivery peoples names/numbers on it and I called the first guy on the card. I called him, told him where I lived, including the apt # and that there was a reliable working elevator and In less than one minute, he said, he could deliver the chair to me in Brooklyn today at 6 PM. I said, hold on, I won't be home until 7, he said OK, no problem. In fact he said he lived in Brooklyn and he had a good idea where I was. He asked me the size of the chair, and even though I would classify it as a medium size chair I told him it was large. He told me $ 125.00 I said OK, he said he'd be at me at 8:00 PM asked me to snap a pic of the chair and a copy of my paid receipt. I did all of that within 5 minutes of our original phone/conversation and told him to respond back to me that he got it all, and he did.
When I got home, I texted him saying I was home. When 8:00 PM past, I texted him with no response. When 9 past I called him and he abruptly said to me he was busy he would call me back later. When ten o'clock came, I texted him saying forget about the delivery I will make other arrangements to get the chair - I just figured he didn't have the chair and it was still in the store. He now calls me and says he will at me in about 1 hour. The hour past and the one and and a half past and I called him again and now he said, do you want me to deliver it early AM tomorrow... I said no. He said he was 45 in away. Well, he finally arrives, calls me from the street in front of the building and is expecting me to come downstairs and take the chair up. I said, hey man, I gave you my apt # earlier. If you were not bringing the chair up to me, you should have said that then, I would not have bought the chair. Also if he had come before mid night, i might have agreed to let him deliver the chair to the front of the building as there is building staff who at an earlier hour would have taken the chair from him and brought it up to me.
With a big attitude he says, OK I will bring it up. He does, I meet him at the elevator, he brings the chair into my apartment, I pay him and we say good night.
I was very uncomfortable with the entire interaction after the first call which I made from the store when we agreed upon a price and delivery time. I will think a bit more carefully if I were to find a piece of furniture that I liked in one of their stores and needed delivery.
OH, when I thought he had not even picked up the chair from the store, I called the second person on the list, who had a much nicer everything about himself and was $ 30.00 less. Well, u know what, the chair is in my apartment and I am very happy with it.
Happy Thanksgiving Housing Works.
