Houston TX Hot Chicken Opens in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"I'm looking forward to the Gaslamp opening of Houston TX Hot Chicken (HHC), a Texas hot-chicken chain launching its first major San Diego outpost in early September. They serve never-frozen, antibiotic- and hormone-free fried chicken in flavors ranging from No Spice and Honey Butter to Liftoff and the fiery “Houston We Have a Problem” (HWHAP), which requires diners to sign a waiver; the San Diego team is also hosting an HWHAP Spice Challenge on August 24 with a $1,000 prize for anyone who finishes three HWHAP chicken tenders with a three-minute cool-down without liquid. The menu centers on fried chicken sandwiches on brioche buns and fried chicken tenders paired with slaw, fries, or a Belgian waffle, and includes concertina (crinkle-cut) fries loaded with chopped tenders, slaw, and pickles, fusion fries topped with mangoes, black bean corn relish, and cheese, chicken tortilla soup, and a Texas Caesar salad with white corn and sun-dried tomatoes; a “secret” menu item is a waffle sandwich with an original hot-chicken patty between two Belgian waffles. They also offer housemade lemonades such as cucumber-watermelon and blueberry-lavender, plus milkshakes and cookies. Founded in 2021 by race car driver Edmond Barseghian, the rapidly growing chain now has 20 locations across the U.S. (including two in California) and plans to open at least two more San Diego outposts in 2025, with possible neighborhoods including Kensington, North Park, Hillcrest, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Del Sur, or Kearny Mesa." - Helen I. I really enjoyed my visit to Houston TX Hot Chicken! The Sandwich & Tender combo is unbeatable, packed with flavor, great portion size, and cooked to perfection. The food is spicy in the best way, and the seasoning is spot on. What stood out just as much as the food was the friendly and super fast service. The staff made the experience even better with their positive attitude and efficiency. Definitely a place I’ll be coming back to. highly recommended for anyone who loves quality hot chicken and great vibes!

I was in town for the Esri User Conference last week. Tuesday night, I needed dinner, so I wandered up the street and found myself at Houston TX Hot Chicken. It wasn't very busy at the time, so I stepped up to the counter and ordered a 15-piece nuggets with fries. I selected buffalo on the heat scale along with ranch and house dipping sauces. I sat outside and waited. After maybe 10 minutes or so, my order arrived. The chicken and fries were both pretty good. Next time, I might keep it to 10 nuggets, and I'd order two ranches instead of the house sauce. The house sauce was sweet, and I didn't care for it. The ranch, however, was pretty tasty. Also, it was pretty crowded when I left. I guess I timed it just right. Bottom line: I would definitely eat there again.

Live a few blocks away from here and tried this “newish” place for the first time. Sat at the bar area after ordering. Staff was super friendly and nice to see how great they all got along and helped eachother out. I got the mild heat and was perfect. Sandwhich was great, sauces were awesome and the crinkle style fries were crisp and delicious. Definitely a good stop of in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter.

We actually found this place while walking in the Gaslamp district. I love spicy chicken so I was down. I got the Texas Caesar salad and chose buffalo as my sauce. I took it easy on the spice level because the hotter ones were considered dry rubs instead of wet. Because our food took longer than expected the manager (I assume) came by and offered us a free drink and I tried the watermelon lemonade. My salad was good it wasn't short on chicken. Just wish it was more salad mix and less croutons. But overall I enjoyed my meal.

Houston TX Hot Chicken in San Diego is a must-visit for hot chicken enthusiasts. The chicken is incredibly flavorful, and the spice levels cater to all preferences—from mild to the daring “Houston, We Have A Problem!” which requires a waiver due to its intensity. The signature house sauce is a standout, adding a delicious kick to every bite. The staff is friendly and attentive, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. If you’re in the Gaslamp Quarter and craving some top-notch hot chicken, this spot won’t disappoint.

I ordered the 2 Tender Meal from the kiosk. I chose the second hottest presented, which was Spicy - Habanero. The hottest presented was Liftoff - Scorpion. I figured Liftoff - Scorpion would of been the same level spicy as the hottest at Hattie B's or Dave's Hot Chicken, which I can barely finish one piece and I have a high spice tolerance. Someone after me asked for the hottest that they had and they told him that it was Houston We Have a Problem and you have to sign a waiver to get it. I was disappointed that Houston We Have a Problem wasn't offered on the kiosk and I actually ordered the third hottest flavor. The Spicy - Habanero tasted good but I definitely would of gotten Liftoff - Scorpion. I asked if I could have some of the pepper powder for the fries and would pay for it but I was told they can only put it on the chicken. I offered the person that ordered Houston We Have a Problem a seat at my table. He gave me a piece of his chicken and it was extremely hot. My tongue was burning for a minute after I took a bite. I'm glad I didn't order it because I had to go to the convention center shortly after and wouldn't have been able to finish in time.

Quick lunch just a block away from the SD Convention Center! Ordered through their website for pickup and glad I did because there was a long queue at lunch time. The Southwest Salad was good, though I wish there was more lettuce/salad fixings. The chicken nuggets as toppings were delicious!

Got the cheesy chicken sandwich with cheesy fries. Soooo damn good and the fires were on point too! Just the right amount of heat too. Recommend this place! Sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful San Diego weather made it even more enjoyable.
