How Restaurants in Gentrifying Areas Can Respect the Local Culture | Eater

"An over-150-year-old historically Black university whose campus quad has become a flashpoint in local tensions as nonstudents use the lawn like a public park and walk dogs there, prompting complaints from some community members and sparking debate about who belongs in the surrounding neighborhood." - Ryan Hughley

It was a great experience. I love the way the campus was laid out. Easy to get around.

Today I went to drop off my niece who’s continuing her second year of pre-med. the experience was amazing. I love how supportive the staff is. They have smooth transition process during moving in season. They were very well organized and had keys, moving carts, parking permits and guidance everywhere. I noticed that minorities are the majority at Howard. Diversity is embraced and everyone is welcomed and respected. I loved how they have sanitation stations everywhere fondue to Covid-19. The application process is easy and they financial aid staff is very helpful. Howard university os affordable and well known school. The dorms are spacious and private. Kitchen is well organized and the bathroom is huge. Campus was a little crowded because it was moving in day, but it was so organized that by 2pm everyone was situated and the streets were cleaned. I recommend this university.

Howard University is in the process of changing, improving and increasing their level of services they offer their community. GoodLove this place. Had a good experience here. Enjoyed the homecoming Saturday with my daughter. I missed my high school's homecoming but enjoyed Howard's. Sorry DCs Dunbar had to go to the Mecca.Great institution for higher learning. Homecoming 2019 was fun, except for the score of the game. This campus was really nice. The college presentation was concise and thorough. The presenter seemed knowledgeable and engaging. It seems to be a great place offering a lot of opportunities for young adults of color. Our tour guide was a young lady who is a senior at the school and she was so articulate and presented the information in a way that conveyed her knowledge of the school and also how much you really enjoyed going there. The students on the campus all seemed very happy and friendly.

There's no place to park close by the hospital. You have to pay for parking in order to be closer and within walking distance. After so many years of doctor's visits, Howard University is still a great hospital!

Yelp
My experience of Howard dates back all the way back to the 80's. I used to love attending their soccer games. Back then, they had recruited an entire team of players from Trinidad. Their coaches were strict and often yelled at us ball boys for not giving the balls to the players fast enough. Later in life, I've met and worked alongside people who attended Harvard. My observation is that they are incredibly resourceful, strong willed, and prayerful.

Yelp
This iconic HBCU is providing excellent educations for young people. It was established in 1867 and for such an old campus, it is doing pretty good. The celebrations and traditions are kept here and it is great to experience them. The faculty is phenomenal. This is a place that embraces our children and young people to develop excellent minds for future excellence. If you are accepted here...YOU ARE BLESSED! There are several things that can be improved upon in the dormitories. Vermin, rodents, failing elevators, and failing equipment, etc. These things are at all universities so the playing field is fair and even. There are some great dining halls for dormitories, 2 on campus and 1 in Howard Towers housing a bit off campus. The Soul Food Thursday in the Dining Halls is AMAZING. The Bison Spirit and Pride is infectious. Long live Howard University! Go Bisons! HU...YOU KNOW!!

Yelp
Historic college in the heart of the city of DC. I wanted to wait until the semester was over to rate this college as a parent through the experiences of my son Howard is an HBCU! Our kids can often feel a level of protection amongst familiar faces. This is why many black students choose to come here. The university's biggest lesson for our children is that, they will learn to be self sufficient. Through chasing behind professors, advisors, RA's, and other administrators, they grow up real fast. They learn how to hold people accountable. Some of the dorms are outdated, dim, insufficient lighting, leaky faucets, rodents. For $3500k a semester. It's a DC city, it's not pristine. But my son loves it here, thank goodness. That is all that matters. Oh and soul food Thursdays matter to him a lot. Kids can find themselves here, and can often find their "people". I'm confident my son will be more self sufficient and independent because of attending this school. The nationwide camaraderie through current and alumni students is another experience he will treasure forever.

Yelp
Howard is a joke. 58k and parents can't see there kids graduate. We flew from San francisco. They didn't even honor reserved tickets. It's a complete joke. So what was the purpose. This is unacceptable.

Yelp
Howard is by far THE worst school anyone can attend. Don't waste your time or money. My husband goes to their medical school program and has had by far the worst experience. The school and staff are horrible, they are unorganized, and could care less about their students and their wellbeing. Because they are an HBCU it's just a money grab for them.

Yelp
The way this school never ceases to amaze me on ways to let down their students. You would expect one of the top HBCU's in america to hold up to their reputation but Howard only cares about how they are perceived in the eyes of the public and not for the students attending/living on campus. I unfortunately had to defer for a term to work due to increased cost of living in DC and had discovered I was incorrectly charged double for housing. I have been working this past year in returning and after realizing that the remaining balance "owed" to the school doesn't exist I contacted the school to inform them of the matter. Since then its been several weeks with 4 case escalations on my account to remove the hold that is preventing me from enrolling in courses in addition to applying for scholarships. The Bursar, Registrar, and every office that Howard has employed does not seem to know how to remedy the situation and now the term is about to begin and I am left with no alternative to continue my education for this upcoming Spring term. I am unable to apply for scholarships to help my CoL in the DMV, I am unable to enroll in courses at Howard, and unable to even seek another university to continue my education all because I was double charged $6500 for housing and refused to pay the extra charge so now my transcript is being held hostage until someone that knows what they're doing is able to fix the situation. Its been weeks and it'll be too late by then. In my time spent at Howard I've witnessed students camping outside due to inhumane housing conditions regarding rats and mold in the ventilation, in addition to a strike led by Howard faculty regarding teacher working conditions and fair pay. With the funding that Howard receives every year from the govt, alumni, and tuition, I am in shock of the current state of the campus. The labs have broken glass in the sinks and rusted eye wash/flush stations. In my last fall term Downing Hall's A/C was permanently set about 90* degrees and became a sauna in the winter making it impossible to attend in person lectures. In addition my Genetics professor (tenured) even admitted that with the tuition that students are paying we should be expecting services and amenities provided for us for school projects as the neighboring competing schools do for them such as Georgetown, American Uni, etc., as our genetics projects involved using twizzlers and toothpicks instead of actual DNA structure models. I used to take pride in the school that I was attending, now Im ashamed to have to go through this ordeal due to administrative incompetency and the blatant lack of care for students.

Yelp
This review will be mostly for the Dental school and my time here lol Ive been going to the schools dental clinic for sometime now. There was a time when I needed an emergency procedure and my dentist wasnt accommodating and neither where were my oop expenses. #sad My nerves were put at eased once I was there. Place is top notch. Dental students were on their A game and gave me the best care then the dentist I had when I had another insurance carrier is old and could probably use a refresher course on how to be a better dentist. Theres procedures to be followed if you want to be seen. I was lucky to be seen even if it was later in the afternoon. Doctors are always looking over the students shoulders to make sure the work is done right. They really do an amazing job in keeping my choppers pearly white. Its painful but hey tcb right?! On to the campus, lots of rich history here, students, faculty and staff are very friendly and welcoming. I needed to take a few classes before I started my law school journey. The professors and faculty are very welcoming and truly want to see you succeed!! Most of all GRADUATE!! The campus is well light and I feel safe at night. Campus life always have something cool going on!! However, the campus itself seems to beginning to show its age, some classrooms and buildings are in need of repairs and renovations. I hope they can fix it up. HU!! You know!!

Yelp
Not only is Howard University a great university producing good citizens, but to know Washington, D.C., you must know Howard University. The university started in 1867 and its campus is in Shaw NW historic. If you go and explore the university, be respectful of its legacy and the current student population. After all, it's their university. The campus is on a hill overlooking the city offering great views. Many of the buildings are historic and beautifully designed on the outside and inside. The Ira Aldridge Theater hosts student performances open to the public. Again, you cannot know this city without studying and visiting the campus of Howard University.

Yelp
Howard is a joke name only when you violet the rights of your workers ..then you do the same to your students as well..in a soft undertone every parent has the rights to take time off for the needs and care of a new born .. it's a federal law and Howard is in violation of doing just that.. under the American disability act.. you should not be able or recognize as the Mecca charity begins at home.. if you can't care or stand for your staff then you stand for nothing.. shame on you Howard and everyone who send big check in support this bully organizations...

Yelp
Ahhhh, HU....my beloved alma mater. I officially felt "old(er)" for the first time in my life escorting my 19 year old on a walking tour of this fine institution. I even learned some history along the way on the tour I wasn't aquainted with. The hour long tour was conducted by student ambassadors in a 1to1 fashion. Our tour guide was a junior double major from Louisiana and cute as a li'l button. The tour itself was very nice and followed up by another hour long presentation by the Assistant Dean of admissions - Ms McCants. Part of the presentation included a video showing "Howard West", a collaborative with Google and engineering students. Very impressive! 20,000 applications....7,000 admitted during the last academic year. Yearly tuition $27k + another $14k roughly in room/board and incidentals and it's clear to anyone observing this school is no joke. Never has been. I'm sure it was half that cost when I graduated in the 90s....yikes. I was lucky enough to have come here after 3 years in the military, so that covered much of the expense, but clearly, it's quite a financial consideration for most families. Glad to see they've modernized a bit with security call boxes, apps for this and that; new construction...new housing options, etc, and some other stuff but basically the campus remains as I remembered it as that School of Business major way back when. It felt like reconnecting with an old friend and I was glad to experience it with my daughter. She told them I was an alum which made me bashful cuz I wasn't gonna mention it lol. The whole vibe and experience? Good stuff. Real. Good. Stuff. HHHH UUUUU!!! Youuuuuuu knowwwww!!!

Yelp
The Mecca! Here for the parent orientation and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Much of the concerns I had with their lack of attention was put to rest with their answers, information, and genuine/heartfelt expressions of love for the student body. Sold!

Yelp
Brought a young friend of mine to the school tour and was quite pleased and amazed. The history, the pride, the high standards is something that we black Americans have always had and Howard reinforces it in our community. You must attend a tour. One thing I wish would have been mentioned more is the school of nursing and the school of medicine. The school of medicine was never mentioned and there school is nursing was mentioned in one minute. I also wished they would have added a little more talk for students seeking an advanced degree simply because many of the parents who brought their students could become students again themselves. The only thing that really turned me off was that the young lady doing the tour kept saying that the ratio of men to women is 1:15. This is 100% untrue. The ration is about 1:2.5 under age 29. Age 30 and above its 1:1.1. There are many reasons why there are more women in college than men with some reasons being more men go into the military and go to trade schools instead of college when starting out. Men also have it easier obtaining work that pays higher than women after high school and it may cause them to delay education. This could be the reason you see the numbers distribute more evenly after age 30. This tour guides comments are the reason why I am giving the review 4 stars. So with all this said I am hoping my young friend decides to attend. We are looking at ways to get her funding. She needs this.

Alyssa R.

Yelp
As I meet other graduate students at Howard University, we all seem to have a common sinking feeling. I have met people who wish they transferred but it was too late, who have mountains of student debt due to lack of funding for such a "prestigious school", all feel academically unsupported. Accredidation is a mess and most people in my cohort can't afford to live in DC because of the lack of funding and classes are gradually pushed online. You can't get ahold of anyone in administration or financial aid via email or phone. Everyone's experience is different but I am tired at Howard and am utterly disappointed in the "education" I have received thus far. 10/10 do not recommend.

Yelp
This historically black college and university (HBCU) has been instrumental in progressing the black culture, fraternities, and sororities. It is located in the heart of Washington DC, and embraces, encourages, inspires, and encompasses all things positive for the African American community. This institution has produced countless graduates who have gone on to be productive citizens, and it is mentioned several times over in history.

Yelp
When it comes to the education received, one can't go wrong with the experiences and knowledge gained at this institution! Awesome professors, amazing programs and opportunities for students.

Yelp
My alum matter and beloved, Howard University. Well I will start off with the good first: Never have I attended a university with so many people of color other than when I did my undergraduate degree in New York (CUNY) college. It was interesting, empowering and influential in my professional growth. The HU experience opened my eyes to the, "Black Perspective," in more ways than one. Having a sound educated perspective of people of color in the field of Social Work, I am sure is one that I gained while attending classes. Majority of my professionals were inspirational, culturally competent and well-educated. Amenities of the school were average. My favorite place was the HU Bookstore which has since been sold off to Barnes & Noble. I have heard that the change was beneficial for business. As a graduate student, I did not enjoy the experience that many undergrads enjoy however, being around my peers in class sufficed. The Bad... Should you get ill, PLEASE be mindful and follow up with your billing as the coders are ignorant and will incorrectly charge you an obscene amount for care. Unfortunate it is true, regarding the ill ran operations and administrative issues of the University. New leadership was aggressive in managing funds and attempting to build the rapport with future and former graduates however, years of poor management has greatly affected trust. Inflation has hurt the school funding as well as the amount of students attending on loans. This private institution will run you $15,000 per semester which does not include books or housing. Therefore expect a $45,000 per year investment. Other options include grants, ROTC scholarship and or savings to assist. Education in a marketable field is essential. Chose wisely. With that being said, I am satisfied with my degree from Howard University and am grateful for the experience. I would strongly consider sending my child to HU for the culture and educational experience.

Yelp
Thurgood Marshall, Ben Ali, Zora Neal Hurston, Antoine Bethea, Roberta Flack, Ossie Davis, Phylicia Rashad, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Patricia Bath, David Blackwell, Ruth Ella Moore, Harold Ford Sr., Cathy Hughes, Elijah Cummings, Mike Espy, Patricia Roberts Harris, Earl F. Hilliard, Benjamin Hooks, Gregory W. Meeks, Malik Zulu Shabazz, Kwame Ture, Walter Washington, General Benjamin O. Davis Sr., David Oliver, Leon Dash, Gus Johnson, Colbert King, Toni Morrison, May Miller, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Donny Hathaway, Shirley Horn, Kenny Lattimore, Meshell Ndegeocello, Jessye Norman, all four members of Shai, Richard Smallwood, Shauntay Hinton, Ananda Lewis, Al Shearer, Malik Hassan Sayeed, Debbie Allen, Laz Alonso, Anthony Anderson, Taraji P. Henson, Carl Anthony Payne II, Phylicia Rashad, Roxie Roker, Lance Gross, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Isaiah Washington, Marlon Wayans, Karen Malina White, Amiri Baraka... What do all of these people have in common? They are some of the most notable to study at the illustrious Howard University... just to name a few. The list goes on and on. Google a handful of them and you will easily see that HU plays not with excellence. Howard University was founded by Oliver O. Howard, Civil War hero and Commissioner of the Freedman's Bureau, as an enactment by Congress in 1867 during Reconstruction. As officially written, it was to be "a University for the education of youth in the liberal arts and sciences." Black youth to be exact. Commonly referred to now as the "Mecca" of HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), Howard stands firm on an amazingly rich history and continues in its commitment to produce "leaders for America and the global community." It is one of two schools in the U.S. with an annual congressional appropriation, the other being Gallaudet. Howard is also defined as a Research University with High Research Activity by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and currently ranks #115 on the list of best National Universities by the U.S. News & World Report. Considering that there are over 4800 colleges and universities in the U.S., that would put Howard roughly in the 97th percentile. Not bad at all. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's get down to the nitty gritty. Do we have the best administration or facilities? No, definitely not. That is unless you're referring to the Health Sciences Library, which is fantastic. Are we one of the wealthiest schools with a rotund endowment and efficient operating budget? Nope, incorrect. Do we boast a mighty list of triumphant and nationally ranked sports teams? Hell to the naw. So what then makes HU so great, you ask? It's Howard flippin' University. As a soon-to-be two-time Alumnus of Howard, I can say that I wouldn't have become the woman I am today had I gone to any other school. I honestly couldn't imagine having been happier anywhere else. It definitely hasn't always been rainbows and butterflies, but HU was the epitome of what I desired in a college (at least for undergrad). If there is one reason students come here, it's for the EXPERIENCE. By far one of the most unique in the country. Just ask any Howardite and he/she will likely agree. Although the overwhelming majority are of African descent, HU students represent some the most culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds in the country. Hipsters, jocks, southern bells, rockers, rappers, savants, artists, dancers, aristocrats, musicians, entrepreneurs, the disadvantaged - you name it, we've got it. Attempt to naively stereotype us based on the fact that we are black, and you will have made a very grave mistake. Howard Bison are intelligent, opinionated, fashionable, and dedicated. We are committed to service and will go so far as being threatened by the Secret Service to stand firm in what we believe. Our intellectual conversations and debates far exceed the confines of the classroom, often times into places like the Punch Out, the Cafe, the dorms, and the Yard. Our homecoming is the bombDOTcom, and the Showtime Marching Band gives everyone a reason to celebrate. We are the birthplace of five of the Divine Nine fraternities and sororities, and we operate a middle school dedicated to educating DC youth in the sciences and mathematics. Not to mention our professors are some of the most passionate you will ever encounter. Howard is by no means perfect and definitely not for everyone. But it is a prestigious university rooted in a great legacy that we will proudly uphold. It was here that I saw both President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama deliver speeches on the same stage in Cramton Auditorium. Here that I learned how incorporate a healthy sense of black cultural pride while not losing sight of my identity as an American and a human being above that. Here that I learned what it meant to truly persevere to victory. "As we sail life's rugged sea, O Howard, we'll sing of thee."

Yelp
I believe this calls for ::insert the howard hand:: and HU YOU KNOW! I love/hate Howard. I have learned so much here about myself and about the diaspora. My professors (well most) are underpaid and truly know the material they are teaching as well as WANT to be there. Personally, if you weren't paying me to live in this expensive arse city then I would chunk the deuce in a minute. However, despite all of the problems I have had, I can handle myself in practically any situation. Howard breeds hustlers because if you don't stay on top of everything you will get run over. Howard is NOT for everyone. It is for me. I wouldn't have been as successful at starting my business (and I am currently in my JUNIOR year) or venturing off to do my own thing without the permission of someone else. I have met so many wonderful people and walk the halls where legacies were created. I am so proud to be an educated black female with the opportunity to attend such an institution regardless of the A-building or any other negative Howard staple. I can go on and on and on about my love for this university but I will just save that for my graduation speech next May!

Yelp
I attended the Commencement Ceremony on Saturday May 11, 2019. No shuttle service from the parking lots. Parking was horrible. The walk from the limited parking lots to the graduation location, Main Yard, was up steep hills. The handicap and senior citizens were not taken into consideration as attendees regarding available resources to reach the Main yard.

Yelp
Ahhh yes, HU. I would like to thank you for providing me with this completely worthless degree in Finance. Not that it's your fault, it's just unless you IMMEDIATELY enter this field in some capacity, your unable to get in the door later. I probably should have gave that a little more thought as an 18 year old - but I digress. The mere act of having your degree has opened doors and allowed me to live a very meager lifestyle in expensive ass LA where my rent is higher than most mortgages across the country, and yeah I probably could be ballin' out of control in say . . Tupelo, MS .. .but who wants to do that? Thank you secondly for "the yard", man o man what a place to just kick back and watch some of the lovelies as they go from class to class, wearing those skirts & dresses, lookin' fly, hair did and what not . . .yes indeed. Damn shame I'm too old to go gallivanting through there a few more times, though please do not hold me responsible for my actions on any Homecoming event I may attend, after all, isn't that what homecoming is for? Everyone there is above 18 right? And lastly but certainly not least I would like to thank you for being the premiere Black educational institution in the land as I can say proudly I attended and I've never met someone that hasn't heard of your reputation. I hope in the years since my absence, your still holdin' things down. I do reserve the right to disown your ass for any scandals or bad press and like I said above since I live in LA, don't expect no contributions. Sorry, if someone asks though, I will try and send some customers, er I mean students your way to do my part. One

Yelp
Howard University (HU) is one of the finest Historically Black Colleges on the east coast. HU provided me the opportunity to pursue an education in psychology with top African-American researchers, a positive ethnic identity, pursue social interests, develop friendships that will last a lifetime and motivated me to pursue a career in Social Work,. The most difficultly I experienced while at HU was the overworked, unprofessional, under managed and ill-informed financial aid and support staff. By the end of my 3rd and final year the issues were remedied but it was a long, hard, unnecessary road. HU is not in the "safest" neighborhood so common sense and caution is necessary to make a transition to this new environment. But even in the hood D.C. has the most amazing architecture and history which the district takes great pride in preserving. Aside from that The D.C. Metropolitan Area provides whatever one would expect from living in a major city...nightlife, dining, sports and entertainment. The humid subtropical climate can be a drawback, particularly in the summer where the average temperature can be 106 degrees, almost swamp like and 30 degrees in the winter. To the previous reviewer, a degree never guarantees a job unfortunately but a degree with work experience sure makes life a hell of a lot easier.

Yelp
Howard University is a Historically Black University (HBCU) that's located in Washington, D.C.. The university has produced many scholars with the Black community. I suggest that you do some research on the University to determine who it's named after. You'll be surprised.

Yelp
How can you not love Howard? Aside from the shenanigans that comes from being a university in DC, its pretty much the best thing ever.

Yelp
I do like being at Howard, but the experience is dependent of what of Howard you come in contact with. The sciences, COAS, and School of B are pretty good. Communications can be iffy. There tend to be complaints coming out of Communications although they still work pretty hard in there. One of the biggest issues is the Fine Arts department. Theatre Arts is wonderful! The leaders of Fine Arts and the Art department however do care more about their jobs than the students' education. There are a few professors who actually care, but the Fine Art administration as well as HU's administration will concern themselves with keeping the students quiet without actually dealing with the problems. They will fire some of the best professors and keep the oldest less productive. Dr. McEachern and Dr. Everett of Fine Arts have recently ran the department through the ground and made sure students are leaving. I would not recommend Fine Arts for anyone although other portions of Howard are very good.

Yelp
I'm a current student of HU's MBA program. I would have to say that although I love the culture of Howard, I am completely shocked by the operations and administrative issues of the University. I believe that the Federal government, which provides Howard with an appropriation every year, should be monitoring closely the use of its funds. I know that they have already called the university out on the administration building, retention rates, and use of grant monies, but I still believe they should be paying more attention to the internal operations of Howard.

Yelp
Howard University is probably a great school if you listen to all of the former students, but personally speaking, there are better schools! Administration does not communicate very well and you literally have to pry information out of them. I was a prospective student, but their lack of communication has steered me from pursuing an education with this university. I applied and was told to change my intended major without being told that my major was being phased out in the year 2015. If I had have known this, I would have asked for a refund of my applictaion fee. Rethink your selection before applying.

Yelp
this school i thought was a good school but unfortunately, they discriminate student just because they are illegal. don't we live in a free country? i was going to pay anyway it wasn't going to be free. they did not accept me because i did not have a US passport when others school have accept me and even try to help me because they see and i tell them how difficult it is for me to continue my education, but i want to be educated and be able to succeed and fulfill my dream . i never thought Howard was going to be a obstacle for me but i will challenge this and other struggles that are about to come. and even more the stuff they have are really rude and unprofessional

Yelp
I am a proud graduate of HUCM the college of medicine and i can truly say that I received an excellent medical education that has served me well over the past 3 7 years of practice. I had been accepted to 3 other medical schools, 2 of which were not historically black, and I am so glad i made the choice for Howard, having attended a predominantly white undergraduate college which was a good experience, in that i was academically successful, but left me with the impression that there weren't many African Americans who were motivated and pursued excellence, and that African Americans were less intelligent than other ethnicities with few exception and that there were so few of us that we were always designated in "minority programs". It was great to be taught by a predominantly non white professors and doctors and to have the benefit of the learning from some of the great role models as Dr Lefalle and others too numerous to name, to feel good about our race and the contribution we we make to medicine and to our community, dedicating our careers to helping others in our community and training up more like us. I encourage anyone, but especially African American and other minorities considering medicine as a career to consider the great institution that HUCM is.
