On the Grid : Hoyne Brewing

"Hoyne walks a hard line of producing amazing beers, and not fussing with much else. If you swing through Rock Bay along Bridge St, you can't miss Hoyne's adorable "FRESH BEER HERE" sign and walls of beautiful label art. But step into their growler station and sampling room and you'll see: this is a brewery dedicated to its work. They're busy folk, permanently at max capacity, but the work is worth it and the brews never fail to deliver." - The Number

After years of waiting to visit Hoyne, today I got the chance to visit the best brewery in the BC province. Hoyne makes the most remarkable beers. Cheers to more beers!!

Hat's off to the Hoyne team (particularly Laura in the growler station!). Not only have I enjoyed their beers for the longest time (dark matter is my favourite), the staff are super welcoming and very easy to deal with. I had ordered a small keg off of Hoyne, and they were totally on top of it with ensuring it was cool, and providing a large bucket for ice, and the tap. Unfortunately I had to cancel last minute, and a full refund was promptly issued. Fantastic customer service from these folk, and the best tasting beer.

I have been a fan of Hoyne's beer since they opened back in 2011 and have filled growlers and done tours several times over the years. in June 2015, we did another backroom tour, hosted by Master Brewer Sean Hoyne himself. Super entertaining and informative. I love the ability to actually go behind the store front and see the operation and personally hear the stories (and taste the beers of course). The tours are by donation to a locally supported charity and do need to be booked in advance as they run on an as-available schedule (amongst brewery operations and so on). Usually I can find 1 or 2 beers I like in any given brewery, but like some of my other favorite brewery's (Parallel 49, Feildworks), Hoyne's range of beers ALL seem to be good to superior. Dark Matter remains an insanely brilliant beer. Some exterior/interior pictures below of our last tour.

These people are SO good at what they do, they make it a pleasure to do business with them. Professional, helpful, knowledgeable and patient. As newbies to the craft beer world, we love it whenever we get to visit them on Bridge St. Thank you for being so awesome!

Google
I introduced my partner to “Dark Matter” tonight believing he would really enjoy it. I am not a beer connoisseur and I don’t like stout but Hoyle Brewing’s Dark Matter is an amazing beer! My partner says he has now found his new favourite and will look for it whenever we are out or for just a nice thirst quencher at home. Way to go guys, although I’ve known of your amazing “Dark Matter” for a few years now I was so happy to introduce my guy to it. Then for his reaction to be so enormously positive I knew I needed to give a shout out to you. Well done, can’t wait to go to Victoria to visit the brewery in person.

Google
We visited several breweries in Vancouver and found this one to be the top one. All four beers we tasted were crisp, fresh and a wonderful taste. A new one was yet to be released with a cherry flavour added. Can’t wait to taste that one. Congratulations Hoyne!

Google
Hoyne brews classic beers. Beautifully balanced, well executed with great ingredients. While so many breweries succumb to the “over-hop curse”, Hoyne’s beers shine on the merits, without that crutch. I’ve had the privilege of drinking some of Europe’s best beers and it’s such a pleasure to know I can buy locally made, world-class beers right here. Thanks Hoyne crew!

Google
Most reasonably priced, quality-produced beers on Vancouver Island, we haven't had one we don't like. Irene and Laura are phenomenally excellent brand ambassadors...bright personalities and full of good information about their beers.

Yelp
I first tasted some of Hoyne Brewing's finely-crafted beers during a family stay in Victoria a few years ago. After reading about their products before the trip, daughter and I were anxious to try them. And though we never got to the actual brewery location, we had no problem finding their brews for sale in liquor stores, and to enjoy in pubs throughout the city. Our very first tastes were via pub 'flights' of draught products, and they sure scored high on our taste tests. 'Dark Matter', a wonderfully, dark and delicious ale, became one of our trip favourite brews. I found out recently that the government liquor stores here (Vancouver & vicinity) were carrying some of their products. So when out to catch some Christmas cheer, daughter and I looked for it, and were very happy to find, and be able to catch six-packs of both 'Dark Matter', and 'Shine On' (an India Pale Ale). I was fortunate, and able to purchase the last on the shelves -- and when home, split them, so we could have tastes of each for Christmas. Dark Matter sure lived up to our memories, and Shine On was such a delightful, new taste treat. So glad these wonderful brews can now be found here -- it will definitely ensure not having such long times between tastes of Hoyne's brews from now on!!

Yelp
No food, parking is tough but available and the beers were really good. We did 2 tasting flights and enjoyed them all. The service was awesome. The lady behind the taps was extremely friendly and helpful with planning our next visits. It's kind of a dive place but cute. Good enough that we bought 10 more cans to go

Yelp
We always seem to find breweries wherever we go. The Hoyne Brewing Company was right across the street from Parachute Ice Cream. They're also next door to another brewery, Driftwood Brewery. We dropped in for a quick visit on a Saturday afternoon. Would have down a beer flight but we were on our way to do some rock climbing. They had some merchandise (t-shirts, hats, soaps, growler bags, etc.). Coolest thing they had was pressurized growlers that keep your beer fresh for two weeks!Expensive though ($205.00 to $285.00). There was 8 beers on tap. Their logo and design is on point. - Dark Matters - we grabbed a bottle to go. I'm not a huge dark beer person usually but this was easy to drink. It's their most popular beer. Solid brewery to check out. Will have to come back to do a tasting!

Yelp
Really wanted to love the beer, as it's a really cool spot run by really cool people. And the beer wasn't horrible, but I had 5 different types and every single one had a metallic aftertaste, as if i could taste the giant metal vat it came from. The beer was also expensive but I'm okay paying premium price for premium product but that aftertaste really ruined it for me. I may give it another go and see if I got a bad batch!

Yelp
Stopped by Hoyne's on a mini-craft brewery tour in Victoria. Great location right around the corner from Driftwood Brewery with plenty of free street parking. They have some great beers but unfortunately no tasting room. Growler fills and bottles of their beer are available for purchase. The person serving us was quite knowledgeable about the Hoyne's beers and the history of the craft brewery. And they provide samples of all the beers they have on tap (by donation). Sampled the Dark Matter and Appleton ESB....with the latter more my style with its high IBU. Would have liked to try their Gratitude...perhaps will find a bottle the next time they brew it. It was a positive experience and they have some great beers.

Yelp
4-taster flights for $5, all of which went to charity. Quality beer and friendly staff. So stop by.
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
Could this be Victoria's smallest tap room? A flight is offered based on a cash donation to charity, and the beers were pretty decent. Their Pilsner might be the best Pilsner in Victoria. Unfortunately because it's tiny and no seating or even a bathroom, it's probably best stop in for beers to go, or expect any tap room experience will be brief and then just keep it moving to the next place. Still worth stopping into though.

Yelp
Great beer! They mainly do growler fills, but we got two taster trays. We liked them all, but our favorites were Vienna (Amber Lager) and Dark Matter.
google avatar

Lara O.

Yelp
Really nice staff, and great beer! The t shirt designs are awesome. Wish they would get the licensing to have a tasting room as this space is tiny. Grow hoyne grow! :D

Yelp
Thank you... Hoyne Brewing co..!!!! I like my Pilsners from all over the World but isn't it funny that my 2 top Pilsners are brewed in Victoria BC...!!!

Yelp
Hoyne's a solid entry in the West Coast beer scene. Clean, flavourful, and bitter IPAs. Unfortunately, Hoyne doesn't do tasters if you're not buying a growler or bottles. So ofcourse, I had to taste, so I left with a growler. Typically there's three to four items on tap, solid west coast fare. It's worth noting, they are right down from Phillips, Vancouver Island and Driftwood. So if you're already exploring Victoria beer, There's plenty of reasons to go in, buy a bottle, and have some tasters. Unfortunately visiting the brewery proper isn't worth a stop on its own, but be sure to stop by when in the area.

Yelp
Fantastic beer, most famously known for "dark matter" (which is unreal). There seasonals are always great, Especially the voltage espresso stout. I'm personally a big fan of the Vienna lager. And from what I've heard the hoyne business is super charitable and great for the community! Cheers

Yelp
small brewery in a random industrial area. had good reviews so we stopped in to grab a couple bottles. had a variety of flavours from espresso stout, dark matter, and summer haze honey wheat beer. each sip started with great flavour but ended with a strong metallic note.

Yelp
The beer is terrific and the staff are so nice and informative if you go there for a tasting, you'll definitely want to return.

Yelp
We enjoyed everything about Hoyne. It was recommended to us by a local and did not disappoint. The beers were excellent, staff knowledgeable and the small touches set it above the rest. They donate and give back to the community around them. Thank you Hoyne!

Yelp
I had actually tried the Hoyne beers at a Bard and Banker in Victoria the night before we went to their tasting room. And to be honest, it really isn't a tasting room per se. Yes, they will give you a taste of something you are interested in BUYING, but there is not flight to try everything. I actually felt like a nuisance asking for a couple of samples to decide what I wanted to buy. I did end up buying a bottle and a cool glass but probably will visit some other places the next time I'm up that way. Just didn't feel welcome to be there.

Yelp
This is my favourite brewery. I have yet to try a Hoyne beer I haven't loved. Do yourself a favour and stop in and try it if you have not. Victoria has a lot of great little breweries, and they all have their positives and negatives. I have yet find Hoynes negative.

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing!! This brewery keeps quality as their goal! Fantastic family business with kind, warm-hearted employees! Great beer, great times!

Yelp
I have never been steered wrong by this Brewery. Everything they make is top notch. Seriously. My beer tastes, unlike many other West Coasters moves about the spectrum all the time. I don't need 100 IBUs in order to make claim that a beer has quality. Currently I am favouring the Down Easy Pale Ale. I don't want it every day, but I also really enjoy their Dark Matter concoction. It is quite indescribable as beers go. More of a taste base to describe other beers in comparison too it. How much do like Hoyne? I pay the extra 50 cents to enjoy their products even when Victoria bars have others up on their worthless daily beer specials. And by the way, 50 cents off is not a special. This city has some pretty frugal bar keeps.

William D.

Yelp
I enjoy a really good Pilsner style beer, which is hard to find here in Southern Calif. My wife and I tasted the Hoyne Pilsner at the Bard & Banker in Victoria back in 2013. Best Pilsner I have ever tasted. I may have to plan another trip to Victoria just so I can taste this fine beer once again.

Yelp
I enjoy beer, and I enjoy the company of friends. Today was an excellent day for both. We started out on the water taxi and got dropped off at the Point Ellice House stop (for those taking the water taxi over) and then made our way to Hoyne for our first stop of our walking tour of breweries. We didn't realize that this wasn't a full service brewery, and was mostly for growler fills. We ended up talking to the owner's daughter for quite awhile about the brewery and the names of the beers and had a taste of several of the beers so that we could come back and get a growler later. I am of the mind that the beer should always come first in the taste and not be over-powered by any of the flavors that a beer possesses. In that regard, Hoyne was excellent. The beers, all of them we tasted, were all very well balanced and full of flavor. I especially enjoyed the Dark Matter (which my colleague asked if the brewer knew the significance of that name and we were informed he definitely did). The next day my best friend walked back to Hoyne to get a growler of the delicious brew. Thanks for the hospitality while we were visiting on 6-4-2015.

Bruce M.

Yelp
A great addition to the local brewing scene. They are definitely dedicated to creating quality products. I fill my growler regularly there and have never had a beer that wasn't good. They don't go for the really weird taste combinations like some other local brewers which is fine by me. Solid quality craft brewing without gimmicks!
