The Best Ski Resorts in Europe for an Under-the-Radar Getaway | Vogue

"This Small Luxury Hotels of the World property in Balderschwang, with its wood-clad houses framed by towering peaks of the Allgäu, offers an alpine vibe that’s both minimalist and cozy. The property sits in a high valley of the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park and is hugged by meadows and forests. Inside, it gets even more dazzling: a 4,500-square-meter Mountain Spring Spa with an infinity pool facing the mountains, an Alpine Zen garden, various sauna areas, a Japanese onsen pool, and exclusive spaces for massages and Ayurvedic treatments. The hotel’s culinary concept highlights local plant and animal products, with seasonal dishes built from ‘slow food’ ingredients." - Chadner Navarro, Nicole Kliest

HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu (Oberallgäu, Bavaria) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Less than two miles from the Austrian border in Germany’s Allgäuer Mountains is a luxury hotel with a name as unique as its setting: HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu, a 66-room ski-to-door lodge designed for mountain comfort. Alpine-style rooms, solid wood furniture, and unpretentious décor define the interiors; outside, it’s all about nature. Guests can exit the hotel and immediately access a cable car station, and the Balderschwang ski area is just beyond the door. Should you want to venture a little farther out, Germany’s longest year-round toboggan run is just a short drive away. Not that you need to go anywhere at all — Slow Food–inspired cuisine is served outside on the terrace, with panoramic views of the mountains to enjoy." - Tablet Hotels

This small luxury hotel is nestled in a quiet village, offering a peaceful retreat. I appreciated the thoughtful pre-arrival message letting me know my room was ready—an attentive touch that set the tone for my stay. That said, my arrival was not without challenges. Finding a place to park for check-in proved difficult, and the hotel’s additional fee of €12 per night for on-site parking felt less than welcoming, particularly considering the already premium room rates. Once inside, however, the hotel revealed its true strengths. In my 10 years living in Germany, I can honestly say that I enjoyed some of the finest traditional German cuisine here. The dishes may not be elaborate, but their simplicity, rooted in local ingredients and authentic flavors, made for a memorable dining experience. The only drawback at dinner was the absence of a sommelier to recommend wine pairings—something I would expect from a property positioning itself as a luxury destination. Another highlight is the spa. The facilities are spacious, thoughtfully designed, and well-equipped for both relaxation and treatments, offering guests a complete wellness experience. Overall, if authentic German cuisine and excellent spa amenities are at the top of your list, this hotel is well worth a visit

Wow! Great host, great location. Will be back!! It's a grown setup, so yes, you will find more polished hardware in other high end places. But this is more than offset with charm and true hospitality. Loved it!

I would like to highlight the steps taken for environmental protection and energy efficiency, which can be found in detail on the hotel's website. The wellness department ensures a cozy and pleasant stay. We can find several areas suitable for relaxation with beds, armchairs, hanging armchairs, rocking beds, etc. that satisfy all comforts. Outdoor warm water pool with experience elements. A gym equipped with special energy-efficient machines, open 0-24 hours!!!! Which is a very good initiative!! Free sports and harmony programs every day!!! The hotel simply offers so many extra services for free that it took several hours to read the website!!! and in reality I could experience that guests are really welcomed in this spirit. During our stay at the hotel, we experienced that the owner runs this hotel with heart and soul, and this is also reflected in the harmonious, family-friendly atmosphere. a place that deserves the name "island of calm" for us!

Along with some friends, we had stopped to grab a drink during a motorbike trip. When the three of us sat down, it was immediately clear that the waiter preferred us to go away rather than stay. The waiter (a man with gray hair in a bun) was extremely grumpy, to the point of rudeness. Eventually, we did get our drinks, but we also received the bill without asking for it, so the message that he wanted us to leave was clear. The location is beautiful but if you want friendly service, don’t go here.

This is quite possibly one of the most inviting stunning travel experiences I have ever had. Our family chose Hubertus to break up a long drive between Neuschwanstein and Grindelwald, and what a surprising highlight. We were charmed by the welcoming staff who were so delighted to host Americans (a rarity). Karl the owner offered to take us personally on a bike ride of local trails, patiently helping our daughter master her bike. He took us to a local goat farm where we met his friends and listened to an impromptu singalong group. The food was incredible, the tasting event a delight, the spa top notch, and the rooms so beautifully designed and comfortable. We loved our stay and hope that life leads us back to Balderschwang again. Thank you to all the beautiful people who made our stay a joy.

Pretty much everything during our stay was perfect and focused on giving us a wonderful and relaxing time in the beautiful Alps. It is clear that the family owning the hotel cares a lot about the guests (they are always to be seen giving a hand here and there, or chatting with guests), and equally cares a lot about their employees (one has definitively the impression that they are indeed considered part of the family).||We loved the decoration of the hotel, subtly bringing together traditional elements with more modern touches and a delicate, and sometimes original, vegetal presence. In any case, the atmosphere reflects an environment thought with a lot of taste and attention.||The service is always efficient and couldn’t be more friendly. Maybe I’m being naive, but I couldn’t help thinking that the people are simply happy to work there and do their best to satisfy the guests. The food is always very tasty and of high quality, alternating between specific offerings and large buffets focusing on local products.||As to the wellness area, the new building is a fantastic addition to the original hotel, with top of the line saunas and three swimming pools, of which one heated and the other fully natural (it almost gave me the feeling of swimming in a lake). The gym is modern and very well equipped for a hotel (I tried it). But even better, one can simply decide to go out and participate in one of the many activities (hiking, mountain biking, etc.) proposed by the hotel. Of course, many other activities are proposed indoors, such as yoga or Qi-gong classes or Ayurveda cooking courses.||This hotel is simply a fantastic place run by lovely people. Definitively recommended.

This family-run lodge and spa was recommended to us by German friends who had visited a few times before. We went with them for 4 nights in December 2018 and it was every bit as lovely as they had said. I think we were the only English people at the hotel, but the staff generally speak good English. ||As well as the excellent spa, steam rooms, pool and saunas, the hotel arranges a series of activities every day (which are included in the room rate), including: Relaxation classes, Yoga and guided walks - which we did in fresh snow in Snow Shoes. This was the first time we had used snow shoes and it was a fabulous experience. The weather was great, blue skies, and the views are breath-taking.||We also did the evening activities: A Gin master class and a wine tasting.||There is a smallish ski area and the ski season opened on our last day (15 Dec).||The whole hotel is clean, modern, comfortable. Our room was large and bright.||However, the best thing about the hotel is the food (which is all included). For breakfast, there is virtually everything you can think of, all freshly prepared. I loved the cold fillets of trout with freshly grated horseradish. There is also a selection of dishes, hot and cold, at lunchtime, plus cake, strudel, waffles at afternoon tea time.||In keeping with the Hotel's philosophy of healthy eating, the dinner includes both a vegetarian and a 'detox' set of courses, as well as superbly prepared meat and fish dishes.||In short - if you want a relaxed hotel which provides plenty of opportunities for activities as well as great service and food - Hubertus will not disappoint.

Relaxing get away. Sauna and spa area relaxing. Rooms are very nice and worth the small amount for the upgrade to the suites. We had a corner room in the old building that was really lovely. But changed from first room in new building, same price and class but half the size and looking into other building and rooms. Food was included and nice dinner but lunch was hard to find something to eat from buffet. We did get sick of food after two days as it was all the same every meal. Good for two to three day stay. The surrounding area is very pretty and lots of hikes.
